From a story running on Aint it Cool...

Major spoilers are hidden...

Hey Harry,

I thought you might like an update as to what we can expect from Blade Runner - The Special Edition (or whatever it may be called). A friend of mine (I saw over Christmas) is working on the film and has had a few "screening sessions" with Director R. Scott to go over what changes and additions should be made. He is one of the senior production guys on the new project and should have known better than to drink and gossip with a geek like me…but, here it goes...

1. There is a new scene that we have never had a look at. It was "lost" during the original film processing and was "re-discovered" when the archive of the original footage took place. My friend sates that it will be very cool, but would not tell me what it was...I'll try to get it out of him soon...

2. Some VO may stay. RS is not opposed to it's use, but the shots around it should be re-edited and have a tighter pacing if it's to work - most likely, some VO will be in the new version.

3. About 3 to 7 min of "original" footage will be trimmed and cut to make the edit flow better.

4. New sound design for some of the cars and equipment may be used. Although the original sound is a masterpiece, RS thinks that some of the technology assumptions (i.e. hydro electric power sources) is not in tune with the reality of today - look for some "combustion" in new sounds…

5. All the special effects will be re-matted via computer and wire removal is assumed. Some new background details (flying cars) might be added as well...

6. They're going to fix the bad lip-syncing and some of the stunt double shots that got through.

7. The unicorn will stay…but its effect/placement in the movie may be different due to the "new scene".

The biggest news I have are the comments that Ridley Scott made often during the production review:

When looking at certain sections of the film RS mention that he could not "believe that they (the audience) can't see he's (Decker) a replicant". This is the sub-text that he is using for the film. Decker (in RS's mind) is a replicant. My friend knows that this caused uproar online, but feels that the new shots and edit will make this issue clear to all.

Hope this is new info for you and yours...all in all, it should be something to see. The projected production completion date is 5/02 - no word on re-release dates or if it's going straight to DVD.

Best,

"Skin Job 5"

What the hell is VO though?

EDIT: Just figured it out....Voice Over....D'oh!

Well, we all know how accurate AICN (and the master Harry Knowles) is!

How special can it be if scenes are 'trimmed'. It won't be the movie that people want to see (and why this endless fiddling with stuff that doesn't need it?). It's all that bloddy Lucas' fault!

In this month Empire magazine RS says VO has been removed (maybe not all of it?) and therefore some scenes that DID have VO look strange when shown without. Therefore they have been trimmed to look 'correct'.

It seems Directors cannot leave their creations alone! But then again its their party.

Don't like the sound of this.

In my opinion the sound should also stay as it is.

Hope some of this is just rumour.

I have no problem with Directors changing films around as long as they continue to make the original version availalble.

I have steadfastedly refused to buy Close Envounters because I really want the version I saw at the cinema. Hopefull Spielberg will one see sense.

I really hope they include all three versions of the film in this package - the original voice-over version, the director's cut and this new version. I can't say I'm too keen on the changes that are supposed to be being made.

Thought he confirmed doing that about 6 months ago in an interview with Total Film magazine?

Really do hope that Warners make a good job of this disc. Needs to be at least two discs, if not three. Heck, if the likes of Pearl Harbor (Vista edition) can get 4 and even an old, albeit long movie like Cleopatra can get three, Bladerunner deserves equivalent treatment as I'm sure plenty of archive material is filed away in vaults somewhere.

Do bear in mind that the original director's cut had stuff cut from the initial version. I guess this may be the footage he talks about trimming?

I also don't like the sound of this Trimming. Most people will jump up and down and be angry at this trimming. we want the original film but done to SE standards.:brickwall

Charlie de Lauzirika (who's in charge of putting together the special edition) posted this over the the Home Theater Forum (http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37261)

If you know what Ridley is going to do to "Blade Runner," then I think it's only fair that you share the details of this alleged "butchering" with everyone here. We're all ears, Todd. (And if you cite that ridiculously inaccurate AICN article as your source, shame on you!)

"Blade Runner" is an exceptional film, it's one of my favorites. I'm anxious to see this rumored new version of the film, but call me a purist--I want the narrated version as well.

You're not the only one, Tom, that's for sure. It's pretty loud and clear that most people want to have alternate versions of the film on the DVD. But I don't think it's fair to call yourself a "purist" in reference to the U.S. Theatrical Version. I'd say you're more of an "archivist." In my opinion, a true "purist" would want to see Ridley's original and uncompromised version of the film -- a version he was never allowed to put together, and that includes the so-called "Director's Cut" from 1992. But believe me, I understand what you're saying. Most BR fans have at least a little feeling of nostalgia for the narration and happy ending, myself included.

I'm wondering if this "never before seen" scene is the one that was shown (for the first time, I think) on Mark Kermode's C4 / FilmFour documentary?

The Edge of Blade Runner documentary should definitely be on this. I'd take Harry Knowles with a pinch of salt anyway.

I want a commentary because I'd love to hear how RS explains Deckard being able to view a 2D image in 3 dimensions on that photo analysing thingy!!
