View Full Version : Sony TV - picture wobble

We have a Sony Widescreen TV downstairs which is about 2-3 years old. It is non-Wega and I think the model number is 28WSU2.
I have noticed that the screen sometimes moves from the right to the left quickly as if it is shaking. It does this on anything, even on an AV screen when the AV source isn't turned on so all you can see is the black screen with the AV-1 in the top left of the screen in green writing. Even the AV-1 message moves from the right to the left! It is more noticeable when using Sky Active or the Sky EPG.
It isn't a massive wobble, more of a slight shake but it is noticeable. What do you think?

Up!
I had to take pity on you - having to move your own thread up the forum!
Could it be a dodgy voltage level on one of your scart's pin 8's? If the level's borderline (maybe picking up interference from somewhere?) it could be causing picture geometry changes.
Have you moved the set recently?

It does it on anything - not just SCART connections....I think. The SCART lead has been changed recently yes.
Yeah, but if any scart thinks it's got a signal (dry joint in the set?), it's going to try to switch the settings, one of which is geometry.
Not being funny, but have you tried the good old fashioned remedy of whacking the side of the set? If it's a dry joint it'll have an effect. Of course, it might break the set if you whack it too hard!

I removed the SCART lead and it didn't make any difference I don't think.
Any other suggestions?

Maybe not the same thing, but...
When we moved into our house a couple of years ago I found that the TV and PC monitor used to shake - most noticably at the corners - at various times.
I eventually worked out that it was our electric water boiler running that caused the shake. Must have something odd with our electrics...

I know what you mean Andrew as I get that on my PC monitor. However, this is different. It isn't continous and it is more of a "jerk to the right and then a jerk to the left" every now and again compared to the continuous wobbling of my PC monitor.
I think it started after we had an Amstrad Sky Digibox fitted downstairs.

Is there anything in the service menu which would help it and if so how do you get in there?

My KV36FS70 sometimes appears to jump when changing channels - the screen will shift a couple of centimetres over to the right then back to the left - but only when changing channels. It appears to only do it when switching from an SVideo input to an RGB input.
The way into most Sony's service modes (this has worked on the last three sets I've had - since around 1995 - so it should work for you) is...
Put the set in Standby mode
On the remote control press the info button - normally a screen icon with an 'i+' inside.
Then press '5'
Then 'Volume +'
Then press the button which turns the set on - normally this is just a screen icon with nothing inside it.
The set should then come on with 'TT' displayed on screen.
I have no other useful info on the service mode - just be careful, I killed a 28" widescreen set once just by changing a parameter. The screen went blank and never came back on. :(
Good luck!

Thanks Andrew.
That problem you described is exactly the same as I get yet it happens whenever.
