View Full Version : Pioneer 444K / no pic - cable problem?
Hi everyone & Happy New Year,
just received the Pioneer 444K, ordered through the Bargain Forum offer from upgradeheaven.
Only problem is, after connecting to my TV via SCART (only option on the TV), I can not get a picture, the screen remains dark, so I can not perform any set-up functions.
When I put in a disc, it plays and I also get audio, but still no pic.
I also tried another SCART cable (universal SCART lead from Maplin Electronics) with the same result.
Now the TV is not a very sophisticated one (Phoenix, Italian brand), but only two years old and it worked with my old player (LG 2330P) and a while ago a friend tried something out on his Toshiba SD210 through my TV and it also worked.
I already e-mailed Justin earlier today and while waiting what he says, I thought somebody here would have any suggestions?
Help is really appreciated,
thanx,
T.M.
have you tried a composite to scart connection (using the composite phono sockets on the dvd player). Do you know if your TV can take a RGB/S-video signal?
Thanx for the quick reply.
No, I 've only tried SCART to SCART yet.
If I try composite to SCART, would that work even if the TV doesn't support RGB? And if so, which sockets exactly would I have to use?
It doesn't say anything about RGB in the TV manual, but I assumed it would take the signal, as it's not very old and worked with the other two players.
Thanx in advance for any further info.
T.M.
I don't know what the factory setting for the 444 is but composite is the most likely (i think), the 444 can do composite, RGB, and S-vid output, composite being the most 'basic' and thus compaitble with all TV's. What output was your LG (and the Tosh) set to?
EDIT: this might sound stupid but have you tried all the input channels for the scart (AV) channel. Most TV's have 2 channels for each AV connection (eg. one for composite, and the other for RGB or S-vid)

Hi,
As per my reply to your emails, as you`ve just tried a different scart and now get sound, I would suggest that the problem lies with the cables and the TV. Obviously we have to power the DVD to mod it and see what we are doing / test before dispatch!
I would suggest that the problem lies with a scart that is not fully wired (we had some old maplin scarts, 5 meter ones, that only did sound and RGB, if the DVD player was set to compsite or S-Vid then there was no picture). Your don`t state if your friends DVD was tested with your scart you are using now, or if your friend used his own cable. Also as you have a unknown Tv, I would suggest you test the DVD player on a friends TV.
Hope that helps
Well, as I said my TV is a very "basic" one (unfortunately) it only has one AV channel which I switch to before using the player.
But even if not, the SCART signal automatically appears, regardless of the channel selected.
Now that I think of it though, the LG player was set to composite, I believe (I don't have it anymore, so I can't check) and if I'm not wrong, this older player didn't have RGB output anyway.
I'm not sure about the Tosh as it was only here for a few hours to try a few things.
Looks like the TV then doesn't support RGB also.
I think I'll try, as you suggested, a composite/SCART connection using the video out socket on the Pioneer into an adapter cable.
Might not be the most brilliant pic, but should do until I upgrade to a better TV.
I'll post the result.
Thanx again - hope it'll work.
