As more and more of us here are using flickr (http://www.flickr.com) for photo storage and galleries, a single thread is probably best to collate all the different aspects and threads into one place.
Feel free to post any links and hints here and I'll update this first post.

I am doing a final year project to develop a Flickr application (more than likely to be PHP) so I will probably ask you guys to test it out etc although this will be a few months down the line! So far I am just thinking of the basic gallery style with some frills however any ideas you, as photographers would like to see then please do let me know and I will see how feasible it is with my time constraints/skill!

Hope you guys don't mind me doing this, but ...
I was going to start a Canon 100-400mm L IS group, as I couldn't see one, but found that someone had beaten me to it by a couple of days. The group is a bit lacking at the moment, both in members and photos. Just the 2 of us!! So if anyone wants to join and hopefully contribute, the group can be found here (http://www.flickr.com/groups/81265875@N00/).

I usually save to a jpeg and try use compression to keep the images around 200-300kb at most. usually 700 wide or 525 wide depending on orientation (525 wide gives 700 high at 4:3)

I managed to post a photo a day fro the whole of PAD 2006 (was that July? ) and used less quite a bit less than my allowance for that month ...

I've used flickr for a while. I use it mainly to avoid visits to relatives. Stick all the photos of our trips and days out there and we don't need to bother to visit them as often. I am thinking about getting a second account for my proper photos. And no it isn't a record there are lots of people with a lot more photos. At one point my FIL had 30,000 contacts but he is mad.

Supposedly this "dropping off" lark isn't uncommon, though some people discuss it constantly.

roar349, regarding photo size, I have all my images resized to 800 pixels at longest side and file size is kept to around 250kb. That seems to be good enough for online viewing.

I have pics appearing and disappearing from Explore all the time, there is a random element in the calculations for which photos appear in the top 500 list. I have a core of about 8-10 that are pretty much permanent features though.

Whenever I see a pic of mine on Explore I add it to a flickr set (http://flickr.com/photos/paulforsdick/sets/72057594140772020/) and I've now got 28 shots in there that have been on Explore. I think the highest position I've seen one of my pics at was 6, but over the last few months I've not really had any in the top 100.

When do the pictures you've taken appear in 'Everyone's Photos'? I've been waiting since Tuesday and they haven't appeared yet.

Instantly.

You'll have missed them if you didn't refresh the page within about a microsecond :D

How do you all keep track of your groups?

I have about 470 shots in my stream, (These are all my keepers for the past few years). Naturally with me only getting a flickr(and pro) account recently, it takes a while to add them to various groups bit by bit.

What I do find I have trouble with, is keeping track of all the groups. Normally I just open the groups list in one window, and my organise page in the other.
I go through the groups list from bottom to top, checking the limit, checking none of my shots are on the first few pages still (ie a slow group), then I check the "Photos uploaded by me" page, to see what the last one was. I then go to the organise page, go to the last shot uploaded then work through and select some more (chronologically) , then go onto the next group up the list.
I do this until I reach the most recent shot on my stream, at which point I stop uploading to the group.

Ive had a look through some peoples lists and what not and they seem to have joined dozens upon dozens of groups. How do you keep track of them all?
Say, you take a shot, do you scroll through the list and pick them out one by one and think "Ahh it'll go into that group....Add". And keep going?

I'm not a flickr user, but am thinking about migrating over to it as my Gallery driven site is starting to creek at the seams lately.

Has anyone here done anything like a migration from Gallery to flickr - is this even possible?

I'd like to migrate most of my Japan and Alaska galleries over, as well as some wildlife shots, but the idea of doing it all manually doesn't appeal. Anyone here moved from Gallery to Flickr??

A quick Google shows that even migrating Gallery from one host to anyone is a major PITA..!

I'm just using flickr as a place to spread my photos but not as my main gallery. I just upload 800x600 max resolution photos and just a subset. That way I can use the free account. I just use the flickr upload tool and drag images I want to upload across, then use their online organiser (quite nice) to group photos.

I've not migrated to flickr entirely and I'm sticking to my own gallery software as it's on my own server and easy to keep under control and manage plus I have a huge amount of storage space by comparison. I've switched recently to Exhibit Engine which is very powerful and has a more professional photographer appeal to it (not that I'm pro by any sense :D). EE 2 has just been released and looks very good and nice support from the guy who develops it. http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=94

A word of warning, I think it's in Flickrs T&C's that if you offsite link to a shot (like integration on another website), then you must provide a link back to the shot on Flickr. Not sure if it's ever enforced though.

I know someone who basically adds the 'Portfolio' tag to his shots, and his website is set up to parse any shots with such tag, onto his website, from flickr. Pretty neat :D

Thanks Rob. I think I've got a similar script installed already (although never used it).

Here's one for you all...Is there any way to stop Flickr oversharpening shots when they resize them?

I upload them at 700px (longest edge), normally having had only a couple of small passes with the smart sharpen filter. The 700px shots often look quite soft, because I know flickr will sharpen them heavily and the flickr preview shots will look OK.
The problem is, I'm uploading soft full size ones and I don't want to do that.

Why can't flickrs sharpening be turned off ....grrrrr

The only problem is...I like to put the 700px version into threads etc, and also uploaded to my website. This means that I just get comments of "Could do with more sharpening" etc, or would mean uploading a more sharpened version to my website......

The flickr oversharpening is pretty bad, and quite destructive.

Flickr version:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/andydrake/297518852/

Served from my website:

http://odysseus-software.co.uk/photos/albums/Wildlife/DSC2213_web.jpg

The flickr thumbnails have a nasty "digital" look although the full size images are unsharpened - most folks just see the thumbnails though.

Thats fantastic mate. 18 shots in explore at once!

Just looked on Scout and it's up to 19 now! The number dropped during the week to about 10 but I've been a bit more active on flickr the last couple of days and have had quite a few comments/faves, which is probably what's done it. I know the 19th shot was viewed/commented on over the last day.

Highlander: I set up a flickr group a while ago which was supposed to be for landscape shots in an urban setting but I had so many inappropriate images added (not rude, they broke the rules I'd set) and the discussions I started were only commented on by one member that I really got the hump with it so I quit the group and left them to it.

silverpenguin7
24-11-2006, 08:33
I find most of the groups only seem to get commented on every now and again unless its big ones like the Nikon group which gets regular traffic. Loads of the ones I joined say the last comment was weeks or even months ago, yet new photos get added all the time.

North Wales Flickr Map (http://www.flickr.com/map/?&user_id=57602777@N00&fLat=53.044102&fLon=-3.836974&zl=9)

How do you do that? Not found that function on Flickr yet.

Also the geo tags. Have ou got them from google maps, or did you record them on your GPS?

If you click 'Organise' from 'Your Photos', then click 'Map', you can just drag and drop your photos onto the map. Pretty nifty!

I've geotagged all my photos so far: map (http://www.flickr.com/photos/petewilliams/map/)

Worth doing to make flickr 'work'. Certainly affects the 'interestingness' of the photos. Still won't get me into Explore as my photos are too crap :D

Not sure of the benefits of geotagging though.

Saw this mentioned on Nikon Cafe;

Someone may have mentioned this on another thread, but for the holidays, they added a fun feature on Flickr. If you create a photo note and set the text to "ho ho ho hat", it draws a stretchable Santa hat that you can place on people's head. If you label it "ho ho ho beard", it makes a Santa beard.
Now obviously we're all too serious and arty to indulge in that, but if you have more frivolous chums, maybe it's worth telling them...

Not neccessarily - it varies depending on what it has to "compete" against on the day it was submitted. So my most interesting photo might have been submitted on a very competitive day, but my second might be the most interesting of a pretty dull day, and will therefore get into Explore.

If that makes sense.

This photo is already in the maximum number of groups allowed. To add it to (insert group name here) you will first have to remove it from at least one other group.

This is happening with all my images, even ones in a few groups, is this me or Flickr?

It's probably due to the fact that you're using the free option. I think pro users have unlimited access to the number of groups they can join.

RomerojpgX
08-01-2007, 17:35
Nope thats not it :) as I have added some images to an infinate amount of groups before, it wont even let me add a pic to 1 grop now, its crashed or something I guess, as there is no limit to the amount of gropus for free accounts, even tried taking some images out of groups and it still wont add any :(

No there was a new rule introduced a week or so ago.
Free accounts can submit to 10 groups, and Pro accounts 60 groups.

No there was a new rule introduced a week or so ago.
Free accounts can submit to 10 groups, and Pro accounts 60 groups.

About time, I reckon.

A few of the groups I belong to have been spammed by people posting the same thing to hundreds of groups.

Edit: A Flickr guy explains the rationale here;
This wasn't an attempt to restrict your sharing freedoms or kill groups as much as a way to improve the general browsing experience for Flickr members. (Note- we recently lifted the monthly upload cap on Pro accounts, as well as raised that for free accounts, and you can join as many groups as you like.)

It's been noted by some posters in this thread that this will cut down on page load problems, and indeed, this is definitely an issue. At what point the page load degrades depends a lot on individual factors which are not in our control: how robust your network connection is, how 'free and clear' the route is back to Flickr, your computer, your browser, your additional applications/add-ons that affect Javascript performance and maybe something I am forgetting. Add these factors up and for some people, browsing Flickr can be a chore when you visit a lot of photos that have a very high number of pools they reside in. We've seen images posted to hundreds of groups, and we'll get help cases opened with us over why someone can't open a Flickr page or why their browser crashes on one and it turns out it's been top loaded with an extreme number of groups.

As to the limitation being lower for a free account, well, differentiating a feature restriction for free versus paid users has always been present.

See <a href="http://www.flickr.com/forums/help/31517/page4/#reply158044">this thread</a> for the quoted explanation, and lots of whinging about it.

RomerojpgX
08-01-2007, 18:35
Yup a few people must spend hours just putting images in groups, no wonder some people get 100000 views when they post in alomost every group on the site! well not anymore :D may not give the spammers so much recognition, as a lot of them dont deserve to be looked at anyway.

Highlander
08-01-2007, 20:16
I must admit that I put photos into a lot of groups myself, but only maybe 15-20 at the most. The problem is that there are so many similar groups around, and when you post in one, you get invited to another etc. So you end up joining and posting to loads of groups.

Same here, though I haven't submitted to that many groups yet that I'd be over the limit but could see it happening with some group subjects. I'm too tight to cough up for pro though :D

Well, plus the fact I see pro as mainly being about getting lots of web space for photos and really I don't need it. I use my home server for that, and flickr is just space to show off a selection of my photos and get feedback.

I'd prefer a limit much like the upload limits, e.g. only submitting to 10 groups within a month or something like that.

Yahoo are using peoples photos stored on flickr on their web portals - at the moment even if the photos are marked with the CC All Rights Reserved.

Flickr are apparently working with Yahoo to only use photos with less of a CC restriction, (http://www.flickr.com/forums/help/32752/) but you might want to review what your settings are at if you don't want your photos used 'as advertising' without your permission.

I am suprised it has taken so long. Flickr is just waiting to be hacked and spammed and has huge security holes. Letting non paying members do as much as they can being the biggest.

John C
20-02-2007, 08:29
Tonight's problem was a result a few of the photocaches going berzerk and instead of returning the correct image file when a particular photo was being requested, it just returning some random image that happened to be in the cache. The result was web pages which had some correct photos, and some random ones. And the random ones would change when you reloaded the page.

This is not a permenant problem: the primary storage, the database and the software that runs Flickr is all fine. The problem was with the internal directory of a few photocaching servers - the bit that keeps track of which image files correspond with which photo URLs (and therefore items in the database).

To be clear, we regard this as a serious problem, but it is something that goes away as soon as we restart the malfunctioning servers (tonight we found that the servers were going insane again shortly after restarting, but we have isolated the problem and believe we have a permanent fix).

We want everyone to understand that there are no permanent problems with any data, we have not been "hacked" and you don't need to do anything in order to have your photos return to normal (though you might need to do a "hard refresh" in order to clear your web browser's internal image cache where the wrong photos might still be stored). In particular, you do NOT need to delete, replace or reupload any photos.
From the <a href="http://blog.flickr.com/"> flickr Blog</a>

I've had a go at another of fd's flickrtoys - the hockneyizer. It takes a photo and turns it into a collage of polaroids:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/paulforsdick/423953714/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/184/423953714_a6bd0ffb3e.jpg" width="500" height="328" alt="Hockneyized Tindal" /></a>

The tool to do it is here:

The arrangement is random but you can choose the number of polaroids and keep refreshing it to get an arrangement that works (must be expensive in their bandwidth though!).

Has everyone who was an "Old Skool" flickr user updated their email to the Yahoo! login now? This is the last day for the old login.

I signed up about 2 weeks ago.

What do you mean?

Flickr was bought by Yahoo a couple years ago; since then logins have been based on Yahoo accounts, whereas previously they were specific Flickr logins. From tomorrow, the old flickr accounts will no longer work. Doesn't effect you though as your account is new :)

Last time I tried I couldn't find a decent Yahoo username, so I just left it. Going to have to now :(.

It's not easy! Hence my current ID being the Spanish translation of 'Where is the cheese??' The English version was already gone

You should be fine, they started making all new users use Yahoo long before that.

If you do need to merge accounts then you'll get notices on the home page and through the internal mail system.

Thanks for that :)

I am stunned to see I joined Flickr in September! scary, how thats flown by :)

Seen so many photos now its scary, must be hundred thousand surley! I am addicted to the Intrestingness pages, find an artist you like then look thru all their pictures, hard when some have thousands :)

I am about to pass 10,000 views too which is also odd as some people have more than that many views for a single picture, ussually pictures of sexy ladies in not much of anything, swimsuits or just doing something dirty. :oh-hum:

Theres some pathetic photos of ladies with their bits out on Flickr, yet they get 40000 views, basically if it looks like a lady, with little cloths on you may as well be the pimp and sell that image as god theres some nasty pictures on Flickr  yet it seems they get viewed more than anything else. Theres some real stalkers on Flickr.

I'm on 38K view and have nothing decent on it! Is there any way to check any photos that have gone on Explore?

Yes there is, hop over to Scout (http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/scout.php), put your username in and it will show you what you've got in Explore. It's a part of fd's Flickr toys (http://flickr.com/groups/flickrtoys/) group.

By chuff, I have 1,475 photos / 14,254 views - and nary a lady in her pants in sight!

Who'd a thunk it?

I see many people with not many views at all and they are staggering photograhers, so your not alone :D

I guess the people that pimp the most get a lot of views and some of the sexy lady photographers (they are good at what they do) draw in many viewers in a snowball effect. Still some people dont even join groups or tag pictures and still draw in crouds of 50 thousand of some pictures!

Stil I cannot imagine putting pictures in hundreds of groups, it must take forever! then adding hundreds of tags.

I add lots of tags, as a joke a lot of the time :D

The strange thing is my most viewed image is still my image I class as dirty porn :D my close up on the eye that looks like ladies bits, add some sexy tags and watch people look, I did it as an experiment and by god it drew the people in. I like the photo and its techincally good I think and I havent seen anything quite like it, but to be honest its not nice to look at :D imagine a massive poster of that on your wall!

Looks like that problem that we had a couple of weeks ago where random images where showing up amongst our photos has re-apeared.

For me anyway.

I joined for the photo-a-day challenge last year (July), since then I have uploaded 625 images and had 7,708 views. My Explore contribution hovers between zero and three :(

I have never seen anyone with a 'dirty' photostream apart from one time where it appeared as though one user had their account hacked and someone was uploading lots of mucky pictures. That was when I was looking at the the old 'view latest images' function, I don't like the change they have made to it.

Hell I am not sure if your joking there! theres a staggering amount of porn/smut.dirt on Flickr, porn, bondage, violence, esspecially housewives posting naked pics and the like, pretty sad, depressing stuff it has to be said.

Some even gets on Explore, just becuase of some old ladys baps :oh-hum:

Some of these people have added me as contacts, I ran like the wind! I dont say dont stick what you like on your photostreams (its up to you), but god I thought Flickr would stop most images, as some are pretty nasty. These sorts of images ruin a lot of groups too, and yet they get thousands of views. Bassically semi nakes upgly birds get thousands of views, if you pimp them right.

The main way I fond dodgy pics, is I use Explore a lot :) find an intresting picture, click it and look at that persons photostream, and my god some people are freaks

I will have to post some of these odd pics, but I dont want them to get more views  as they already have to many

Still I am one to talk, I just stuck this one Flickr  and joined the Fridge Portraits group  plenty of ladies on there exposing there baps for the camera
