Ok, I'll ignore the fact they labelled 3x00 as 3x01, so I'll say "Episode 2" meaning what they call episode 2 (but is in fact Episode 1). The discs are labelled as 1.77:1 so I'm guessing they're anamorphic, but I watched on a 4x3 TV in letterbox mode so I was black barred... except one scene right at the beginning had the White House in full frame... anyone else notice that? If it is an anamorphic disc, that shouldn't be possible I'm sure...

(so many west wing threads i'm not sure if this was covered previously....)

The S3 DVDs are non-anamorphic. Its a 16:9 letterbox release.

It was only with S4 did they put it in proper widescreen on R2. R1 had it correct from S2 onwards.

I had a feeling that was the case. Silly of them to include a 4x3 matte in amongst the episodes tho, tsk! I might consider buying "the big box" from the states, but i have s1p1, s2p2, s3, s4 r2's so its a lot to give up.. might be worth it tho :) cheers!

From what I remember of my R1 copy of Season 2 (no longer own it), the episodes also contain 4x3 opening credits but within a 16x9 anamorphic frame, so black bars down the sides there too.

I'm thinking of going for the complete set, which is the one to go for, R1 or R2, or are they the same.

R1 all the way. It's cheaper for starters (even with customs fees) and it has all the extras and the best a/v presentation.
