View Full Version : 5 Photos of a subject in different positions, can i layer them all to make 1 image ?

Hi there,
Took 5 Photos of a friend today sitting at 5 different seating positions on a large couch/seating area.
Camera was on Tripod and never moved.
Is there any way in Photoshop to layer all 5 Photos onto each other to make 1 image with my friend x 5 or do i need to cut out each one and paste onto the main image... ?
Cheers. :)
I think someone did this in a recent Photo of the Week entry so should be possible. Probably something to do with layers on PS.
Is it a bird? :D
If the background is in *exactly* the same position, and is exposed the same way etc, then you should be able to layer all the images ontop of each other in Photoshop/Paint Shop Pro, and then using the eraser tool, roughly remove areas other than the subject to reveal the layer beneath.
This is very dependant on the stability of the shot though. If there's any difference in them, then you may have to cut out the person in all but one of the shots, and layer him over the first.
By the sounds of it though, the first method should suffice.

Dean.

Dean,
Camera was not moved in any way, so hopefully it will work.
Also took some more Photos in a sort of Presentation type situation in a Conference Room and some more overlooking a Balcony.
I will attempt to give it a go later.
Cheers. :)
Cool.. It may also be worth softening the edges of the eraser brush, so that if there are any slight discrepencies, then they'll blend together, rather than jar with a harsh edge.

Anyone got any Tutorials they can point me in the direction of for this... ?
Had a look at some books in Waterstones, but could not find any info.
Also am going back through the PaD for July but can't find who done it for one of their Pics.
Remember it was a Housework Photo... :D

That's the one. :notworthy
Will need to Email him.
Thanks. :)
It's actually not too difficult - I managed it in the last shot of this set (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=417930) and it turned out better than I expected, especially as it was a handheld shot. If you really do have a fixed background and the same exposure, you might be able to just select the subject and copy and paste into one 'target' image, then zoom in to position it right.

I think i am going to have a problem as i took all the Photos at an angle that makes each seating position overlap the previous one.
So i would need to have the farthest(sp?) away one in first, then the one next to it which overlaps it, then the next and so on.
In fact would anyone like me to send the Images to them and see if they can have a go... ?
Would be most appreciated. :)

I'd be interested to see if I could but I'm not sure how confident I'd be in getting it to work.
If you don't mind sending them to me as well as someone else who'd be able to make a proper job of it I'd be interested in having a go.

Ragnarak, have sent them over - 5 x 3 Meg Files!!!
Maybe i will upload them to my webspace as it is taking ages for them to go. :D
Rob, checking that out now.
Cheers. :)
Best way to do this is by using layer masks, I reckon. Stack your pics (i.e. make each one a separate layer), and then use potatoswap's layer mask function to hide the ones you're going to be working on.
Rather than erase the layer, you erase the layer mask (which "reveals" the layer itself). You can, of course, do this the other way round by colouring in the layer mask so that the layer is gradually hidden. The key to it is to figure out which image is the topmost, and which the background.

Hi guys.
It was me that did the pic on the weekly comp called me me me and me.
The best way is to do this is open all the images and place them on top of each other on one image. layer 1 layer 2 etc..
Then use the layer mask to bring the image behind out. once you have got the subject into the new image, the merge the 2 layers together and continue this untill you have 1 image.
see below image;

I can sit and pick faults all day with mine, but for first attempt was happy, one thing to watch out for is the light and shadows. My camera never moved on the tripod and you can see some of the colours in the leather are different, ie: shadows.
Hope this helps

Opened the 5 Images and placed the last 4 on top of the first 1 in order.
Sort of getting stuck after that to be honest... :D

Learning a lot by doing this, mainly how important a steady tripod is ;)
This is my very rough attempt.

I've just noticed a huge bit that doesn't line up on the right that I missed but it's fun trying ;)

For each layer do :Layer, Layer Mask, Hide All
Then click on the black layer mask for each layer and use a white brush to delete parts of the mask and reveal the image.
Experiment with brush size, hardness, etc to get it right. It gets a little big fiddly but I think it'd definitely doable with your source images.

That's great mate.
Will try that later.
Think the problem with the shakey tripod was that when i pressed the remote half way i had to stick the flash back down as it always popped up. Maybe should have waited a bit longer before taking the photo.
Cheers. :)

Hopefully i will get the hang of it, as have got another 4 different sets of Photos taken elsewhere in the building to do as well. :D
Will post my results (effort) tonight.

I'm sure someone could do better as there's a few problems with it that are more noticeable in the full version.
[Edit: Hmm imageshack seems to have re-sized that, give me a minute]

Yes, although in a way that I term "strangely fascinating" - ie she's not drop dead gorgeous in the way that the media would portray, but has a certain something that {ahem** works.

Multiple images, brilliant idea. It wouldn't have occured to me and some of them are brilliant. I'll have to give it a go some time.

I did this one a while ago. But instead of using a tripod and getting my son to move places I put the camera into continuous mode. Then I took it into PSP and selected my son and his shadow and added each consectutive image into the first. Only one overlapped luckily enough. I only wish I could have got a better background.

Thats one cool photo and priceless
Problem for me is that if i wanted something similar i have to wait a few years until my daughter is old enough

Just had a quick look at my site and spotted this one that I did recently.
Hand held, just got the boys to move around taking individual shots then put together in PSP.

This (http://www.flickr.com/photos/rebba/47807949/in/set-1058377/) is my favourite multiplicity.
Just thought i share my first attempt. Was also playing about with ISO3200 on the camera so its a bit grainy.
