Anyone remember this very good short lived sci fi series? I have just noticed that the soundtrack to the series has just been released as a tenth anniversary collectors edition.

Does this mean that we will likely see the DVD box set released soon?

While we are at it, hows about Fox releasing the Visitor starring John Corbett?

It's shown on ITV4 all the time.

Well it is eventually happening

Dark Skies is scheduled for DVD release in October 2007, the information is posted on Bruce Zabel's web site.

As Bruce was the producer of the show, I think that this is quite reliable info.

Check it out at.............

Thats great news, its was a shame it was cancelled in its prime

Yes, great news.

Hopefully it will sell enough copies and raise enough interest for the studio to allow the creators to give us some kind of closure - maybe a new series or a mini series/film.

Bruce Zabel had scripts for six seasons taking the series up to the millennium apparantly so should be enough material there to do something.

We can all live in hope.

It has been on twice on ITV 3 and unfortunately it isn't as good as I remember it the first time.

I just hope the songs used in the series aren't replaced. Great that it'll finally be released though and with extras!

I remember watching this at the time. It was a terrible X-Files cash-in for people who thought the X-Files was too slow moving, if I recall correctly.

A positive rumour about an upcoming US release too!

Theo, it's far better than you remember and along with 'Nowhere Man' and 'American Gothic' is an example of the strong yet short lived genre tv series that were produced by the US networks in the mid 90s after 'The X-Files' hit. They were head and shoulders above similarly short lives shows in the 00s post 'Lost' ('Surface', 'Threshold' and 'Invasion').

I use to love this. Wish it had been left to run as it was planned to bring it years forward each season with the final season being set present day

Dark Skies was ace (was the shadowy government organisation Majestic 12?).

IIRC it had some Aliens facehugger-esque moments too. Very tense stuff for network TV at the time.

Couldn't agree less. It was great, I have the pilot on DVD and the rest as #cough# Xvids and it's still very good - but the fx are seriously dated.

I used to watch this regularly as well. It was my first taste of Jeri Ryan too.

Not sure how it'd hold up nowadays though.

I think it would be a good idea to remake it and see if they can get a proper 5 year deal this time

I suppose a Blu-ray set would be asking too much??

If it was shot on film then it could, although it's going to have to do some amount of sales on DVD to justify it.

Not a chance. There's FX in this show iirc. It was cancelled after one season and only has cult interest at best.

I suppose a Blu-ray set would be asking too much??

Purely on a technical level it's highly unlikely. Like most US dramas from Star Trek:TNG onwards until the early 00's, it was shot on 35mm film but finished on NTSC video.

There have been several discussions on various forums about the possibility of Star Trek:TNG getting a Blu-ray release. However, it would mean going back to the original camera negatives (assuming they still exist), re-scanning and editing each episode in 1080p from them, not to mention re-doing all the effects in HD as all the effects were done on video. Horrendously expensive, not to mention time consuming (US series up until the late 80's are less problematic as they were generally both shot and finished on 35mm film - ideal for transference to the HD realm).

Would love to know how this compares with the UK set! ;) *cough* philbw *cough*
I'm not buying until I know which set is better, although the UK artwork is much nicer.

Well I finally watched the Dark Skies review discs I had - superb picture quality, the series is better than I remembered it. Although the only extras were the "movie", audio commentaries, and a stills gallery. Although I think I may have been missing an extras disc (press release listed 6 discs, I only had 5).

Full thoughts are here: http://www.blogomatic3000.com/2010/11/14/dvd-review-dark-skies-the-complete-series/

Nice one! Thanks, Phil!

A very odd choice to put the pilot "movie" after the rest of the episodes!
I do wonder about dvd producers sometimes!

hmmm, I might go for the US release then if it has more extras (incl. a new retrospective with creator and stars, network promos and the Season 2 proposal. ie. the stuff that makes the set! I say that as a big fan!).

Another review of the UK set (http://www.myreviewer.com/Dark_Skies_The_Complete_Series_DVD_Review/a136066/page3) says:
the extras are squirreled away on disc 5, including the pilot episode that starts the story off.

Also on this final disc is an 8-minute long slideshow Stills Gallery, and a fairly comprehensive A-Z of Dark Skies text-page glossary, which includes some additional story background that I didn't notice in the episodes.

The PR material that came with the check discs did mention an audio commentary and behind the scenes interviews, but apparently there wasn't time to include them on the retail release, which is a shame.
So, are there any commentaries on the UK?

I've gone for the US set that's out on Jan 18th 2011 as it looks to be more complete (and cheaper)!
It's currently $22.99 pre-order at amazon.com. (http://forums.thedigitalfix.co.uk/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=25&url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00465I156/thedvdforums-20)

My US set arrived today.
Very nice, slim packaging. Good essay in the booklet from Bruce Zabel.

54min documentary on disc 6 - Megan Ward still looks lush!
