View Full Version : Ugly Betty

Well I thought this was charming and quirky! It's hardly deep or anything but I found myself really rooting for Betty! It's also funny and sweet! Basically, I loved this! :D
It could have come at just the right time too, seeing as it's hot on the heels of the similar-ish "The Devil Wears Prada"!

AND it's got Ashley Jensen (Maggie from "Extras") in it too!

Nothing deep, but a decent sitcom to unwind with after a long day of work.

Most of the characters are huge clichés, but if you accept it as an OTT portrayal of the fashion industry (and people, in general), you'll enjoy it. The occassional telenovela peeks on Betty's home TV, featuring Salma Hayek in melodrama at its worst, are a fun reminder that nothing is being played straight in this show, so just go with it.

My biggest fear with a show like this is that it will start to take itself seriously with a moral message. There was a hint of this at the end of the episode, as Betty stumbles off down the streets of New York City, and I cringe to think that this was a glimpse of a story yet to come. :oh-hum:

01-10-2006, 15:39
I doubt that,it was just showing her akwardness.
I really enjoyed it anyway,it reminded me of Wonderfalls or Dead like me though obviously not plot wise.
It had fairly high production values on a level with a big budget rom com (without the rom!).
Another one to add to my weekly list.

Enjoyable new quirky show, definitely one of the more interesting of this season's new crop. Could turn out to be this year's guilty pleasure show.

2nd episode was just as fun.
Nice to see another one of Ricky Gervais's work mates showing up.
Looks like Betty is going to save the day ina roundabout way each week.

This was dire IMO, and not even the appearance of Ashley Jensen, who I really really like, could save it for me.

68monkey
08-10-2006, 16:37
Dire? Maybe the way they've uglied up America Ferrera is dire, but the show is simple fun for me. I'm glad to see they didn't go in the direction I feared at the end of last week's episode. As long as they don't try to make Betty go through a huge transformation, or have a Beauty and the Beast scenario (with Betty as Beast), I think it will continue to be a fun way to spend an hour each week.

Still finished episode 4 now, it's like the new Desperate Housewives!

The title scene with Ugly Betty written like that, anyone know what movie that has been "borrowed" from, I think it's the Swedish one "Show Me Love", but I've deffinately seen it before somewhere..

I haven't seen the show but I want to make this known: Thank you E4 (and the rest of the network presumably) for not showing the Ugly Betty trail at EVERY goddamned opportunity, but showing that "its a 9 thing" advert in its place is grating just as much. Please stop trying to force this show down my throat just because you didn't buy Heroes.

No it starts Friday January 5th at 9:30pm on C4, E4 will get the re-runs I think (maybe next week's episode first as well? Not sure).

But it is a funny show (although it is VERY heavily advertised at the moment, I guess they paid mega money for it).

Just think of the one person watching the show that couldn't remember just where they had seen him from before (asuming there's only one other person that doesn't at least watch 24 / Lost / OC etc). There he is working out with his personal trainer with his name shouting out on them on the wall.

A "very" average episode to start a pilot.

Can't really see what all the fuss is about and it certainly didn't make me laugh once, even if it was meant to be a more a humerous drama than a comedy.

Don't think I'll be watching anymore, especially if next weeks preview is anything to go by.

Rather dull. :oh-hum:

davey1970
08-01-2007, 20:16
if you didnt find it funny, i guess there is no point in watching it no - but in relation to your point, i find the first episode are very often not as funny as the rest as they have to spend time setting up the scenario which can detract from the comedy.

Is it just coincidence that by Ep 2 there have been two Gervais-linked actresses in it. Ashley Jensen (Maggie from Extras) as a wardrobe manager or something, and Lucy Davis (Dawn from The Office) as the Fashion Channel presenter.

stupidboyjj
14-01-2007, 17:06
Lucy Davis isn't in it that much, she's only been in two episodes briefly as far as I can remember.

Ashley Jensen isn't in it that much either although the last two episodes (in the US) have featured her quite a lot.

I have no idea why I like this programme so much! But the series is going from strength to strength.

I've watched the first 8 episodes so far and do think it's gets better as it goes on. So, it's not a fantastically funny show, but it's more than watchable.

Shame that some of the characters do seem to lose a lot of their bitchiness as the series progresses though.

How is this doing in the States? Any talk of a second season?

This isn't usually my sort of TV show but i think because of the different subject matter, and the eye candy :D , it's held my interest.

It is sweet in places and at least tries to deliver a message that i think a lot of this shows demographic will latch on to and identify with. Perhaps from a male viewpoint it's not a particularly lol comedy but it's quirky enough for me to want to see the whole season.

It was fairly obvious it was going to be the final season when the new timeslot was revealed last summer. The ratings have been in the toilet all season (since they moved it to the death-slot of Fridays in the US, although they have just moved it back to Wednesdays). At least they have a chance to wrap it up properly. That said I haven't seen any of season 3 or 4 yet so if my viewing pattern with the show is similar to the average US viewer it's no surprise!

It was one of the few shows out there that was just mindless fluffy fun. I enjoyed it and it kinda spoofs the telenovelas that my mum watches from South America

Excellent news, glad they're wrapping it up. I've been completely not bothered to watch this after getting bored at the start of season 4 (characters being written into corners namely) but now I'll probably watch the rest of the series, just to find out how they wrap it all up.

The show's run its course, Betty and Mark are both editors, Daniel is no longer a useless man slut and Wilhelmina's mellowed out, gained equal power at Mode and seems to have developed a working relationship with Daniel. The only thing missing was the probably eventual romantic development between Betty and Daniel (which they can still rush into in the remaining episodes).

Nowadays the writers are just contriving rather tired scenarios to create different conflicts between different groups of characters every 4-5episodes or so. You can only sustain that for so long before it becomes mind-numbingly tedious, so the cancellation has probably done both the writers and ultimately the viewers a favour!

So what's going on in your head ? You didn't like it - that's fine, but it's so barely registers in the UK it's quite possible to go through your entire life without knowing it even exists. So why so so much glee that it's been cancelled ?

why enter a thread bound to be full of fans of the show just to express joy that something they liked has been canned ? Does it make you feel good ?

The cancellation of Ugly Betty doesn't really bother me at all, my wife liked it and i only watched it cos i was sat next to her (mostly playing on my phone) and it had clearly run out of steam - but it's a shame that people who enjoyed the show won't get to see it any more.

I really dislike Eastenders, but if that was dropped tomorrow you wouldn't find me in an Eastenders thread gloating happily that i was glad all those people who enjoyed it would have to do without it.

How has ugly betty existing affected your life for the worse, so that you're actually happy that fans will lose out ?

I am not surprised it got cancelled. It was never the same after Season 1. Me and my missus watched it avidly but it lost something.

Shame but could see it coming really, my OH and me used to watch it together all the time. Towards the end of S3 the OH got bored and left me to watch on my own, Which I will to the death. Hopefully rich boy And betty live happily ever after. (forgotten his name)

I still watch it but glad they've pulled the plug. Season one was excellent & two was fine, but totally lost its way during S3 & only marginally improved with the current series.

Hopefully rich boy And betty live happily ever after. (forgotten his name)It's Matt and he's one of the reasons why it had become a struggle to watch. Awful, whiney bloke, with low self-esteem and women issues.

If Betty does get married, then at least they should make sure to remember that she should wear her mum's dress that Hilda was going to wear for her wedding. It was pretty obvious the dress was intended for Betty all along as they killed off Hilda's fiancee in S1.

It was pretty obvious the dress was intended for Betty all along as they killed off Hilda's fiancee in S1.That and whenever they show pictures of Betty's mother they usually use actresses that are twice the size of Ana Ortiz (I know in a recent episode it looked like Ferrera's real mother)! :suspect:

Of course now Hilda might be getting married again before the end of the season, the question is whether they'll rush the Betty/Daniel friendship towards a marriage or bring back Matt or Henry. Couldn't care less what scenario they go with nowadays.

America Ferrera looked stunning this episode  :luv:

I never thought for a moment they would do a make-over episode for ugly betty to be honest, so they gave us the next best thing, she got knocked out and had a dream sequence about what if she was the 'pretty sister' instead of Hilda (Not that i would call Hilda that pretty but she does have a cracking body)

^ Agreed. Only just caught up with this final season. Still as goofy as ever and a guilty pleasure. Season 3 was the weakest IMO but they pulled out the stops for this last one, good to see some older characters return too.

Gonna miss the Amanda eye candy. :(
