View Full Version : Xbox 360 and the Flakey Wireless Dongle
I was a bit worried this might happen when I went wireless. Within a couple of minutes of signing in to Xbox Live (which takes a lot longer compared to when I used a cable) it just disconnects. I don't use it much for online gaming, mainly just market place demos and such, so it's frustrating when I'm trying to download Jessica Simpsons new video and it cuts out (even more so because there doesn't appear to be an auto-reconnect feature).
My router is a Netgear DG834G which I have secured using WEP. It's upstairs whereas my 360 is downstairs so I'm guessing this could be an issue. The signal is usually "Very Good" to "Excellent" though and my laptop works fine downstairs. It rarely disconnects and the speeds are fine. I'm just thinking about Pro Evo 6 coming up next month and I really want a solid connection.
Are there any settings I need to be looking at or are they all this unstable? I might have to think about switching back to wired.

I'm using the same hardware and my XBox has a nice and solid wireless connection. However, my XBox is 2 (large-ish) rooms away from my router, not a floor. So that might indeed be your issue.

2 360s in my house both work fine with wireless
on in the room next to the router, the other one is downstairs
Using the latest firmware? I've got wireless devices and consoles all over the place and they very rarely drop signal. Last time was in a big thunder storm.
Other than that, could be a safety feature built into the Jessica Simpson download to save your ears :D
I was going to watch it with the sound off. :(
I'll make sure I have the latest firmware tonight, see if that sorts it. Cheers all. :)
I had exactly the same problem with that Router. I updated the Firmware but still had issues. After contacting Netgear they advised me to change the MTU setting to 1492 and that solved the problem completely. Has been fine ever since :)
I'm using the same router to and my 360 is downstairs, router upstairs and i've had zero problems.

Change your MTU as someone else said that will make it work. And another thing turn encryption off and enable mac addy filtering.
No one can use your network unless they have a mac address which is listed in the router config table.
Ok thanks for the advice guys. I may have given you all false information! It's a DG824M (Nearly right!) and I have the latest firmware. My settings are as follows:
DMZ set to the 360 IP
3074 UDP/TCP Inbound (360 IP) and Outbound
88 UDP Inbound (360 IP) and Outbound
I've tried applying the MTU settings but when I go back into the admin page, it's defaulted back to 1458.
Have you only just gone wireless? Have you used this router ok before on Xbox Live? And what NAT setting are you getting (do the Xbox Live diagnostic).
Yeah I've only just gone wireless with it. Before it was perfectly fine. Good speeds and no disconnections. NAT is set to OPEN. :)
What wireless channel is your router set to? I think most default to 11 (the ones I have had have been) - when I've had probs before I've been told to try firstly channel 9, then if that doesn't work try other ones to see if it helps.
I'll give that a go tonight, cheers. :)

AFAIK it's quite easy to change a mac address. (I think it's called spoofing)
How exactly do i go about changing the wireless channel? Do I have to change it on the laptop, 360 as well as the router?
No you just do it through the router.
Cheers matt. Right for some reason in the xbox wireless settings, it was showing as using channel 3. I couldn't find an option to change it so I just set the router wireless channel to 3. So far so good. It's been connected for 10 mins, which is 10 mins more than usual :)
It's the router's broadcast channel that you needed to change (and have done by the sounds of it), not sure if the receiving device needs anything - never done that before. If changing the channel works then it suggests something was interfering with it before.
Yeah I might have spoken too soon. It's dropping like a cheap tarts knickers again. I'll keep messing around with the settings and see if I can get that MTU changed. It's still defaulting back though.

damell - how did you get on. I'm having exactly the same problem (but with Netgear DG834GT). It really is driving me spare.
I've even moved the router from the room on the first floor to a room right next to where the 360 is and it still shows one block strength on the 360 wireless connection.
I really don't get it as my Apple MacBook has full strength from anywhere in the house and my PC is getting a 'very good' signal from all the way up in the attic (so that's 2 floors between it and the router).
Very annoying. I'm being kicked off games and when dowloading demos i can get 1% download before being disconnected!!
Forgot to update this actually. I fixed it the only way I know how. By chucking more money at it and buying the DG834G. It's been as sound as a pound ever since. Speed is fine, market place demos never pause and I never get disconnected.

That's odd - so you've bought the same router as i have yet you have no probs!
Did you change any settings? Did you change your MTU to 1492?
I thought you had the GT? Isn't it slightly different? Yes, I did set the MTU to 1492, and DMZ is pointing to my 360 IP. :)

Ah yes, that is slightly different then.
Right, i'll try the MTU change. Not sure what DMZ is but i'll try it (if it's pointed to the 360 IP will laptop and PC still work?)
They will work just fine. All DMZ does is forwards all ports to the specified machine. It's dangerous to do it on a PC/Laptop because it can then be easily exploited.

Thanks mate, will try it later. Fingers crossed.

By the way, is XBox Live renowned for cutting off if you leave your 360 on overnight downloading demos? I just remember hearing something. Does it go to sleep or soemthing?
