Im getting a samsung r7 hdtv this week, what is the best way to connect my 360 to it? Also what does the optical sound thingy do?

most people pick component as that what comes with the 360. Some monitors/tv's look better with vga though.

Optical Sound? On the 360? That can be connected to a dolby digital amp/decoder if you have one. It will enable 5.1 sound in the games.

The general rule of thumb is from reading other forums:

VGA: Sharper, washed out.
Component: Less sharp, richer colours.

Although a lot will dpend on your telly in the first place. Be aware that there were some issues with playing backwards compatible games over VGA if you plan on playing a lot of original Xbox stuff.

only if you want 5.1 sound. So yes.. and you'll need a decoder and 6 speakers.

A normal optical cable will work

Yep 360 uses a standard Toslink optical cable to av amps/decoders.

Otherwise if you odnt have an AV amp or whatever it does stereo left/right phono's
