View Full Version : Will Die Hard EVER be uncut on TV?

THis is a very odd thing. We now live in an age when just about anything can be shown on TV after the watershed... films with much much more swearing than Die Hard are shown.
So how come I have NEVER seen a version of Die Hard on terrestrial television with all swearing intact?
There seem to be two main "edits" of the film -- the classic "Yipee ki yay, kimosabe" edit, and a duller edit that removes such lines completely. The weird thing is that half the f-words are still included.. so why edit *some* of them? It makes no sense.
ITV showed one of these edited versions the other night.
The trouble is, Die Hard is a film that is on TV so often, and I have seen it so many times on TV, that I don't have the desire to spend money on the DVD. I've seen it so many times already, so I don't want to spend £15 just to hear some additional f-words. But why the hell does terrestrial TV never EVER show an uncut version?
[1] Cheaper to buy a slashed to pieces version?
[2] People who work for most of these TV companies don't know squat about films, programming etc, so just put on any old crap they get hold off.
[3] It encourages you to go and buy the film etc (are they on to a nice earner here? eg Granada provide some ITV programming and they put on so much crap that people go out to some of the pubs they own)
[4] No matter how bad it is, the same number of brainless morons will watch it, so why bother anyway?
[5] Contradictory decisions - their policies about certain topics only seem to apply to certain things. ie someone says "*******" and it's cut, whereas half an hour earlier, someone gets beheaded and raped, two hundred swear words, with no cuts....
It's a mystery!
[6] Time slots. Chop loads out to fit in more commercials and "soap star, pop star etc" type programming.

Will I ever lower myself to watching Die Hard on TV? :) ;)
The question is, will ITV ever show any film uncut?

IMO ITV shouldn't be allowed to show films......I don't ever remember seeing a film in it's original form/aspect.

I heard that PornStar should be on your screens by next Christmas. :p
If it werne't for ITV, we wouldn't have gems like:
"How you feelin', Roy?"
"Pretty FAIRLY unappreciated, AL."
CLASSIC.
Now all you MAGGOT-FARMERS can CURSE my FLIPPING GRASS.
"Yippie-ki-ay, muddy funsters!"
ITV are beyond shambolic with films; as peeps have already said, inconsistency's the golden rule here -- though the "oedipal noun" is considered quite a bit more offensive that the f-word alone, so that could have something to do with it.
C5's treatment of Terminator 2 was classic as well; hack it to pieces violence and swearing wise until 10pm, whereupon they proceded to show it without any edits whatsoever; making a mockery of the ITC code (no 18s until 10pm), but they ignore it completely. Then pounce on C4 for showing 3 seconds of a needle entering the skin in Trainspotting; madness, all of it!

You won't regret buying the R1 Die Hard DVD, have u seen it in wide-screen?
Don't forget that it also had an awful 20 minute break in the middle of it for the news !!
How anyone can putup with this is beyond me. I've not watched a film on BBC, ITV, C4 or C5 since I got my DVD player several years ago.
I did happen to watch Die Hard on DVD just before Xmas, great picture, no adverts every 20mins, widescreen, DD 5.1 and not cut.... this is how it should be !!

Most of the worthwhile films on BBC are uncut nowadays. The only acceptions are films that were acquired a while ago, when things were a bit more stringent.

Yeah, like with Se7en, etc. Pan and scan. The BBC1 version of Se7en is very heavily cut though.
If they acquired it now, it would surely be an uncut, widescreen (maybe not the OAR, but still) version.

Depends what channel it goes out on for wether stuff is widescreen or not. Films on 1 annalogue tend to be 4:3, but are occasionally widescreen on digital, but this isn't done very often as it's a bit of a faff. All the Christmas day films were done like this.
You get more chance of widescreen stuff on 2.

Still not guaranteed - Beverly Hills Cop 3 was shown in 4:3 the other night as was supposedly The Truman Show - both pretty big movies as well!

Beverly hills cop 3 was on 1.
and is not a big movie. I think that Clerks the animated series puts it best.

Yep. Definitely on BBC1, and definitely a terrible movie. And a pretty awful sequel as well.
after seeing quite a few movies broadcast in WS, I was very surprised to see The Truman Show in 4:3!

well, just out of interest, there's a dual transmission happening right now. "Monkey Trouble" on BBC1 has somehow been deemed worthy of going out 16:9 on digital and 4:3 on annalogue. Two different sources don't ch'a know.
