Technically looks very very impressive but I couldn't help but feel bored watching it. Does the 360 really need a new FPS that has 'bullet time' or set in a dark envoirnment?

21-09-2006, 15:03
err isn't this by the guys who did system shock 2?
also the preview in edge makes it sound like it could be really really good.
it's not just another FPS :)

It just leaves me a bit meh.
As I said technically and graphically it looks excellent. It just seems the design is oh so clichéd.
One of the things, besides the change in the control system, that made Resident Evil 4 outstanding compared with it's predecessors was that ammo was plentiful. Bioshock seems to think that people enjoy not being able to kill enemies.
For me I'm just going to file this one under "If Michael Bay made computer games"
Read a bunch about this in edge, sounds really bizzare and somewhat scary

21-09-2006, 17:41
it's not just another FPS :)
maybe i should have phrased this differently, i really don't think it's supposed to be like a standard FPS, from the preview in edge it sounds like they are going for something like Deus Ex, with upgrades that the player chooses and can change as they go along (the slow motion was probbaly one of these upgrades? and if it's anything like deus ex which upgrades you choose will dramatically effect how you play the game), and many ways to achieve each goal, which is not going to be easy to pull off so it could end up rubbish. but i'm still much more interested to see how this turns out as opposed to any more standard fps like cod3 or gears of war :)
Gears of War isn't an FPS
:D
msm13579
21-09-2006, 17:58
yeah, good point, suppose i'm using the term fps to describe a game where you just run about and shoot stuff. i'm sure you can describe bioshock as an fps, i'm just trying to say that if it turns out anything like what they are trying to achieve (or anything like the brilliance of deus ex) then it will be much much more than an fps (or simmilar third parson game :D) where you just run around and shoot stuff :)
Looking at the trailers, it looks too dark. Lights on all the time would help.

I d/l and watched the movie of this,at first I thought it was on the pc and it wouldn't look that good on the 360,then i realised it was on the 360. Graphics look very nice but the gameplay may be a little too slow for some.

I just saw the commentary trailer and i must admit it has my interest.
If there's one thing over the years that i've always muchly appreciated in games, it's the attention to detail when it comes to the environment and the way AI is implemented to take advantage of it. I can see myself spending lots of time simply watching the AI go about it's business in Bioshock, perhaps experimenting with the possibilities of AI vs AI and so forth.
Nice water effects too. :)

If its anywhere near as fantatsic as System Shock 2 it will be amazing. One of the best game I've ever played - in a large way due to the COOP MODE if any developers are listening (which they never do!)

Interesting 15 minute "developer walkthrough" video @ http://www.gametrailers.com/gamepage.php?id=2610 . I'm not really sure what to make of the game just yet, it's certainly got style though.
Oh looks like it's the same video as above, but in HD.

It does look really interesting, its always hard to judge a game by its CG trailer (ie the X06 one) as you have a heightened expectancy of it then.. wondering how many elements of it would be 'real'. But the walkthrough was interesting, the engine looks really nice and it does have a different feel to it than other games of its ilk. I remember SS to a degree, but I was young and didn't really have the patience! I'm looking forward to this tho, fingers crossed.

Bout time we had a thread for this.
This is my number one priority 360 title release in January. Looks absolutely fantastic and definitely something that captivates my imagination. I'm into shooters and RPGs and with seems to be a shooter intensive hybrid with weapon upgrades and storylines to follow.
From the Xbox 360 Bring It Home trailer (against "Big Daddy") i thought the game would have no HUD, but as seen on a recent Gamespot Afterhours interview there's quite clearly a HUD with health values and weapon status it seems.

You might have probably checked out the website, but for those that haven't:
http://www.2kgames.com/bioshock/enter.html
If you go to the download video section, you can stream the:
1. X06 trailer
2. The new teaser trailer
3. best of all - the E3 demonstration which is a walkthrough of the gameplay (which you guys have probably already seen). It explains the relationship of the Big Daddies and Little Sisters. Interesting how they don't automatically attack - an AI concet that i think is pretty sweet!
Incidently, release seems to be around 30th March, 2007.
Saw this being played this at the weekend and it looks really impressive! Was not finished but the Art Deco theme was great and the levels are really well done.
Didnt have all the cut scenes so was a little unsure of what to do / what was going on but there is no doubt this will be a fantastic game! - As to what others said above! Its flipping Dark though!!!

This is one of my most wanted games this year, considering it's from the same team behind the second best FPS ever, System Shock 2 (with the first one being Half Life 2 IMO ) I have quite a lot of faith in them.
All the videos recently have been amazing and it just looks like you have a lot of choice in what to do and how to take down enemies. Can't wait.
I don't like the sound of random respawning enemies.

I don't like the sound of random respawning enemies.
Ah maybe I misunderstood what they said. I read it as: spawning randomly (ie random initial placement and density) but not necessarily respawning. If they do, I wouldn't like that as much either.

I was put off this game when they showed a video of 4 identical women doing synchronised crawling on the ceiling and it just looked a little rubbish. I absolutely love the setting of the game, the rest just looks quite poorly executed to me. I hope to be proven wrong.
Yeah - especially with limited ammo - surely it can't be respawning enemies - wouldn't play right
That's exactly how SYstem Shock 2 (their previous game) played, right down to the ammo in short supply.

I think you will be as the video on Live MP looked really good apart from the slight tearing problems
I too hope it doesn't have respawning bad-guys. It's one of my pet hates in games ... otherwise it still sounds great.
The preview on todays GamerTV looked fantastic, I'm sticking my pre-order in!

Respawning enemies doesn't ruin a game, but it is bloody annoying.
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl had them and it wasn't a bad game but everytime you trudges through certain places you would have to take out the same set of bandits.

All the talk of "spiritual successor to System Shock2" worries me.
If only it did look like any sort of successor to the brilliant SS2 I'd be the first in with my cash but unfortunately the videos have left me a bit un-enamoured.
I guess we wont know for certain till if/when a playable demo surfaces.
Jeez, i shouldn't have popped my head in here, I was blissfully waiting on this coming out next month and i even thought i might get round to completing it!! Is there a demo due beforehand?
I am hopeful, just wish they would lay off the SS2 references. When publishers resort to past glories I worry for what is coming.

there seems to be a demo coming soon
According to the latest list of age ratings to be published by Germany’s USK board, a demo of Irrational's Bioshock is due for imminent release.
Unsurprisingly, the demo has been rated 18 by the board, although its entry on the official USK website doesn't specify when we'll be seeing it on the Marketplace.
However, with Bioshock due to be released in all its horrific glory on the 24 August, we wouldn’t be too surprised if the demo popped up in the next couple of weeks, so as to ensure people get a full-on taste of what 2K Games and Irrational will be dishing up shortly after.

Was lucky enough to see this running this morning at a well know Xbox mag head office (got friend who works there).
From my 10min browse i can confirm:
The graphics are beautiful and some of the best yet seen on the 360, also it moved VERY well.
It looked absolute rock hard, no idea what level it was set on but I was open mouthered at the difficulty.
Couple of the guys had been playing it all weekend and were adament it was the best first person shooter ever (until the next one comes along no doubt!)
I went in with a sort of not to fussed about it attitude as i wasn't a fan off Deus X/System shock but left very impressed and cannot wait to play this now.

They have the same life size big daddy model at Oxford Street GAME store, or atleast they did on July 25th when i was around the west end. I think they have a few around the country and I also think that the figurine with the collector's edition is probably a scaled down 6 inch version of the life-size one.

Given that you get all the same goodies in the CE as the LE, I can't imagine that the LE with the model doesn't come in the same Tin box packaging. Seems crazy to have three different boxes. In fact this quote from 2K makes it clear:
"The BioShock Collector's Edition is available for PC and Xbox 360 and contains the game in a limited edition embossed steel case, a Making Of DVD, Soundtrack CD, hand finished resin figurine (14cm height). "
Also, with regards to CaptainEyeCatch's screen tearing question, apparently you only get it if you choose to unlock the framerate in the options, and even then only occasionally.
Its gone Gold. Not long now.
Was listening to this weeks 1Up Yours and Garnett finished playing it and says it throws down the gauntlet in a big way of being game of the year, also saying its that game that finally beats Half Life. Also says if you speed through it as quick as possible its around 12 hours to beat, so around 20+ hours if playing normal. Then multiple play throughs thereafter.
Can't wait

Available on August 21st (the same day as the regular BioShock edition), the LE will include a Big Daddy figurine, a “Making Of” DVD, and a soundtrack CD. The LE packaging will also be an embossed graphic designed by the winner of the Cover Art Contest going on now at www.cultofrapture.com.
The BioShock Limited Edition will be available to US and Canada exclusively at GameStop and EB for US$59.99 (PC LE) and US$69.99 (Xbox 360™ LE). The Limited Edition will also be available in other territories and details about ordering a copy will be coming soon.

My PC runs Half-Life 2 beautifully - as smooth as silk - and it meets the minimum requirements for Bioshock. Its nowhere near spec set out in the "recommended requirements" however, so Bioshock looks like it would be a chug-fest on my PC with anything but minimum gfx detail (Athlon64 3400+ 2.4GHz single core, 1GB RAM, GeForce 6800GT 256MB).

When I first heard about this I was very excited, over the last few weeks I've been getting less and less excited as I was convinced it wouldn't be as good as I expected it to be.
Having spent 30 mins or so scouring the net for footage and news I'm twice as excited as I first was, I'll settle for it being as good as Half Life 2 but if it's better then I might have to splurge on the big daddy figure pack.
Now that I've finally finished Crackdown I've just got Oblivion to play until Bioshock is released.

Thanks for the heads-up, I didn't even realise they were releasing one.
Looks like Live's dying again.
Started downloading the demo at 4am this morning and it's now currently at 70% with no sign of moving

Yeah I've had it downloading for an hour now and only got 10%, pretty bad considering the stranglehold demo only took 25mins and this is only a little bigger. Maybe it's down to the time they released it as most people probably started downloading it before going to work, that's the upside to them releasing demos at 10am as most people are in work and the downloads seem to fly then
Thanks for the heads-up ... got it downloading before leaving for work. Hopefully it'll be finished by 5:30pm this evening.
You're leaving your 360 on alone all day?
You're going to have a redder ring than a guest at Elton John's birthday party!

 ... I did the same with last week's Stranglehold demo & my home didn't burn down so took the chance again. It's in the downloading-while-off mode so hopefully wont generate too much heat & do a China-Syndrome on me. :D

I very often leave mine on downloading something and don't get to return for several days, and it's not been a problem yet... Launch console still going strong.
That said, when the new version comes out I'm going to get one and retire my original to the bedroom. Hopefully it will be quieter, as either my hearing is getting better or my 360 is getting louder :suspect:
New trailer is good but kinda misleading as it's pre-rendered cutscene footage.
I would have thought the in-game footage was more than good enough to advertise the game?

Bit rough for a paid for service when it falls to pieces every time a demo of anything above an EA move tie-in is released.

This is a bit ridiculous, it's not even peak time. It's just not moving.
Plenty of people on the official Xbox forums have managed to d/load it. Generally good to very-good reviews so far. Seems like you get to play the first part of the game with several Plasmids to experiment with.

Its not a paid for service - demos etc are all free to dload. Only the multiplayer online part is pay to play and thats working fine.

How come they don't delay demos for silver users any more? That would help things. Stuck on 7% for the last 15 minutes now.

I thought they'd implemented exclusive time-access for Gold users for demos?

I've just played half an hour of the 360 demo and I have to say that this is one of the most atmospheric games I've played. The attention to detail just brings Rapture to life. The graphics have been mentioned a lot, but it is extremely impressive, I find the art deco environments more impressive than those of Gears of War. I stopped after half an hour as I didn't want to get too into it without spoiling the full game, but it's safe to say that this is one game that has quality written all over it.

33%... at this rate I'll have the demo just as the game's released
Jesus christ I've had trouble downloading demos in the past but nothing compared to this. Normally a few restarts gets the thing going but this, if I'm lucky, downloads a couple of percent then just stops. It's only going to get worse if MS don't do something in the pre-xmas period

I wouldn't worry about spoiling it, was listening to the new Major Nelson podcast where they talked to Ken Levine and he was talking about how the demo is a specific directors cut version of the first level so it's a bit different from what's in the final game. Done so because Ken hates it when he plays demos and then has to replay it in the final game :D

These slow download times, does it make a difference if you are always signed onto live? I've never had a problem and its never taken me longer than 35-45 mins to download 1gb. Don't some ISP's restrict your speed the longer you are on there (so that someone signing on for the first time is quicker than someone who has been on for a couple of hourse?)

Gave the demo a run-through earlier and i must say it's a beautiful game, with lots of detail in the surroundings and some nice voice work to boot.
Deffo has a similar feel to System Shock what with the "something happened here recently...omg what was that?!" moments.
Combat feels pretty solid too, the only downside i can see being that some enemies are quite nimble and the 3d sticks won't ever be as accurate as a mouse for those sort of situations, but I'm sure there's plenty of room to get inventive should you lack the pin-point accuracy needed for your lack of ammo.
Good to hear the demo is a special cut version so as to not give everything away on the opening level.
I cannot wait for the full game to land that's for sure.

I've played the demo, and it's incredible. Not felt this kind of open-eyed, jaw dropped shivers since playing Half Life 1.
The graphics are spectacular, the water effects at the beginning are hyper-reaslitic. The game is so absolutely realised, the menus are finely polished. The devil is in the detail. It's so atmospheric..
When i landed in the water I thought i was still in a cut-scene, then I realised i could look around and even swim. Amazing!
well it shot up to 56% in about 2 mins now im stuck downloading at 10bits/sec so what with that and virgins traffic shaping i should think it'll be quicker to fly over to the states with a blank disc and camp outside the studios for a copy shaolin monk stylee.

360 multiplayer game problems are sometimes due to the host's connection (if you are paying you should dedicated servers for some games)
People do complain you will find - but MS are not listening it seems and also you get utter ***** shouting people down,

It has finally downloaded after 14.5 hours but I can't play it until I've watched the AMA with my Dad.
Well that was impressive, the reveal of the city is breathtaking. Took me a while to figure out the hacking, but once I did I had a squadron of sentry guns following me. was pretty impressed with it, look forward to playing the complete game now.
My only worry is i might get a big bothered being stuck inside/underwater, i felt like i wanted to pop up for air after this demo :D
reminded me a lot of certain condemned levels, creepy. Nice to see what can be achieved on this console.
Was a weird download for me. Went to 36% in 10 mins, then stuck there for ages. Then it threw me out of live and went back down to 23%. Eventually got it to 96% where it stayed for ages. Had to keep logging in and out again.
I hope this game doesn't resort to the old 'person you are after/in communication with turns out to be the bad guy' ala Prey, Doom 3, Quake 4 and of course System Shock 2.
Anyway I hope you're all brushing up on your Ayn Rand ready for the 24th. :D
Played the demo and loved it, this is my most wanted game of the year and going by the demo I'm pretty certain it won't disappoint. I definitely think that graphically it's the one game that beats epic at their own engine, it looks to me like the prettiest game on the 360, adore the art style and architecture.

The camera that spots you is around the corner after the big daddy leaves the theatre, after 2 splicers attack you in the short corridor it's in the upper left corner overlooking the stairs down. You'll hear it beeping and a red light on the ground noting where it's looking.
To disable it, wait till it's not looking your way, electrovolt with the plasmid to disable it for a few seconds, shoot it with your guns and it's done. No flying turrets will chase you.
If it spots you you have a minute of onslaught to get through as the flying turrets chase you around, so i'm guess you still might have to take down the camera by shooting it.
I took my sweet time with the demo, and wow was it sweet. Must be the best 2 hours console gaming i've had for a long time. Exploring the world made me giddy. It's so just fully realised.

So general consensus is to keep pre-orders, then. ;)
Yummmmmmy!! ... That was well worth all the d/loading bother. Quite simply the best demo yet & a joy to play from start to finish. Graphics are beautiful, very smooth & varied. The water effects are sublime, as is the music & sound FX. Creepy & creates a perfect atmosphere. The AI was impressive, I set one bad-guy on fire only for him to run away towards the water to put himself out, obviously I then quickly switched to the electro plasmid to fry him good 'n proper. :D
Only had a quick go of the hacking but even that looks like a cool, addictive little mini-game. It all just oozes class right down to the menu design & with that taster, it more than lives up to the hype & next week cant come quick enough. One thing though, that footage at the end, as impressive as it was, looked rock-hard. I suspect this game will be a tough one to crack later on, especially once those Big Daddies start kickin' Ass.
Brilliant! :notworthy

Yeah, it's the little touches like the way when you're on the main menu, toggling the options play a piano note. Also, the general art design of the plasmid tutorial screens, the menu is easy to navigate.
Honestly, when i swam to the lighthouse and saw the words:
"No Gods or Kings, Only Man"
and then underneath that, the plaque, "There is No Country for a Man Like me"
I knew this was a game I would absolutely love.

Yay, still waiting for my ADSL2 internet connection to go live so I can't download this yet (judging by the download times I'm better off anyway) but I pre-ordered the CE at my local EB games so I can creep my Aussie workmates out with a big daddy.
The guy at EB games seemed a little too enthusiastic about this game when I pre-ordered, he gleefully told me that he'd already found people on the internet who had made 'big daddy' outfits.

Found out about this demo this afternoon and just managed to get it now :) I knew this game was going to be special but wow!! Did wonder if to get this on the pc or 360 but the 360 ran silky smooth.
The attention to detail is impressive - There is a lot of System shock in this game but much prettier.
Some of the weapons in the end video look a lot of fun.
Setting someone on fire, then sending what looks like a heatseeking missile after them :)
This game deserves to do very well - I hope it does as looking glass / irrational games have always made decent games but they never sold well.
I think i need to have another go....
Yay! 90% done. Only taken 14 hours.
Should be ready by tomorrow morning :suspect:

Managed to have not seen anything about this, and figured I'd download it to see what all the fuss was about, thought it was gonna be another Gears Of War for Me (I just don't get what everyone see's in it?).
But with Bioshock I am pleasantly suprised, nice graphics (some nice Art Deco architecture:dork:), creepy characters and responsive controls.
Well worth the 12 hours to download and unbearable heat, I can now switch the 360 off and cool the room down.
Just can't wait for it's release now, top of my to do list now.

I must've set a speed record by downloading the demo in under 35 minutes (around 9pm, background downloading while playing Flatout) - really surprised when the wee pop-up popped-up saying it had already finished.
The demo, though? Oh - good stuff! I turned it off after getting killed by the first flying sentry thing after the bit where you watch the Little Sister & Big Daddy show at the theatre doors. I'm saving myself :)

So after completing the demo, Bioshock is basically shaping up to be the game of the year in my eyes.
It was almost like playing Half Life again for the first time, that same feeling that this is going to be something really special, I couldn't really fault it.
It seems to draw heavily from System Shock 2 but with a style all of it's own and the atmosphere is superb. This is definately a lights down, sound up game. I spent ages just wondering around looking at stuff.

Just to be wary there's a spoilers section (though it gives warning) but if you don't want to know anything about the game like enemy designs etc don't look at it until you complete the game.

Credit where credit's due, one of the lads on the ntsc-uk forum posted that as I probably wouldn't have noticed it either! :D
Now all I need to do is find a good printshop place to go to!

Count me in for this one, was unsure after the slightly dodgy early videos of the gamepplay but this looks and plays superbly. The atmosphere is incredibly epic and film like and it all runs so smoothly, storyline sounds interesting as well.
Also love the system shock 2 references such as the scrawled writing on the walls, regeneration chambers, ghosts and upgradeable psych powers.
Only negative is the lack of a coop mode.
Now off to find the cheapest place to pre-order!

Not recently there hasn't, last good one (IMO of course) was Gears of War.
I've enjoyed titles since but none have kept me engrossed.
Had a go before I came to work this morning and it's awesome. Amazingly atmospheric.

Oh forgot to mention the audio logs are also very reminiscent of SS2 and add to the atmosphere a great deal!

Just be careful, as I think there might be one or two spoilers in there, especially in terms of characters we haven't met yet.

Good point so I added a spoiler warning to my original post :)
I went for the special edition with all the bells and whistles from Game (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(12813)a(60823)g(80187)), you can get it for £44.99 if you use the £5 voucher that's floating about in the Bargain Forum.

Fair enough, just for me there's been plenty of great titles with just off the top of my head:
Crackdown
Lost Planet
Colin McCreas Dirt
Earth Defense Force 2017
The Darkness
Flatout
But each to their own :)

I'm sure all the people at work will think you're cool with that Big Daddy model on your desk :dork:
Will give this a go tonight, set it going last night and it took about 1.5 hours to download, but by then I was off to bed.

Bioshock is not released til 24th August. Next Friday.
The Play Asia version doesn't say that it has no region protection though.

Yes I know, I meant Thursday 23rd.
Gameplay usually deliver early but they are £40

Bog-standard version will do me fine. Not interested in silly toys & waste-of-time extras that add nothing to the game itself.
Not sure if i'll get Blue Dragon right away now. I dont think it will get out the shrink-wrap with Bioshock being so good.

Ye, I'm interested to know as well as I'm buggered if I'm going to pay more than £30 for this when the PC version is listed at £25 in most places.

Hmmm, I don't know whether I should get the 360 or PC version. I have a good graphics card (8800GTS) but I'm not sure it performs as well as it should. I already have to make some graphical compromises. Take a game like Prey for example: with smoke/haze effects switched on the framerate can drop to under 30fps.
Bioshock may be the first game where I have to lower the resolution, do without AA, turn off some effects... and if the result looks worse than the 360 version, I'll kick myself. Hmm, choices, choices.

And achievements. :clap:I've got an 8800GTX but decided I'd take a punt on the 360 version.

Well hopefully the PC demo will be out in the next week or so and then you can try it and see. I think the demo will be a pretty good showcase for what to expect judging from what I saw on the 360 demo last night.

Frankly, theres no way i'd buy this game on PC.
It's a 20" TFT with stereo speakers vs my 50" HDTV Plasma + 5.1 surround sound and the former just won't provide quite the same atmosphere. No doubt this game is going to be properly creepy in places.

Yeh I really liked the feel of the demo. Some good graphics for the xbox360, and the originality of the environment was very exciting. There was so much to see.
Gonna try it on my PC before I decide which platform to buy it on. I want to see if I can push the graphics much further with my nvidia card.

update on the PC Demo...
BioShock developer Irrational Games has apologised for the lack of a PC demo, following the arrival of the 360 version on Xbox Live Marketplace yesterday. However, Irrational assured that "everyone is working at full capacity to deliver it to you before the game hits store shelves on August 21".
Speaking on the Cult of Rapture website, Irrational's Elizabeth Tobey said: "I cannot express enough how sorry I am for the wait. Thank you for understanding and your patience. Just remember - only eight days left till you get your hands on the full game."
According to Tobey, the developer was keen to launch a PC demo alongside the 360 one but extra time was needed to ensure "that all drivers were ready and that the game looked great on a huge variety of computers". However, the PC version is now in the final stages of testing and should be available before the game's North American release date next week.

The 'tin' edition is just the standard edition in a tin case, like Dead Rising's LE. It doesn't come with any extra content, which is only available in the Collector's Edition including the Big Daddy figure. The CE appears to be exclusive to Game and Gameplay.
Do we know if the 'extra content' is any good? Or like the Forza rubbish?

I just played the demo, fantastic stuff. I love how twisted it is. One of the enemies comes running through the door saying, "Don't ******* judge me!"
Probably the best graphics I've seen on a 360 too. Every surface is bump/normal mapped! That's good advice to try the PC demo when it comes out, see whether my PC can run it as well as the 360, or whether too many graphical things would have to be compromised.
