I've a US PSP which currently has firmware 1.5 on it.

I've recently picked up a few cheap UMD's - mainly TV series (Little Britain etc).

When I play these discs on the PSP, it displays the message; "To Play You Must Update The System Software". The UMD's are all Region 0, so it's certainly nothing to do with regional coding.

...as yet, I haven't updated anything.

Can anyone tell me what the update is likely to be? I'm guessing it may change the firmware as I vaguely recall reading that Sony were trying to force users to change...

Anyone with any knowledge/experience of this? TIA!

The update is a new firmware - most likely firmware 2.0 or above. Small enhancements to UMD spec were made in firmware 1.5.2. There is no way to run these disks on a 1.5 firmware PSP.

If you update then you will need to downgrade at a later date in order to run homebrew applications.

I use my PSP pretty much exclusively for PMPmod AVC, so will never upgrade from 1.5.

I figured as much, like you Grandmaster, I have no intention to upgrade from my 1.5. Time to move these discs on methinks! ;)

Thanks for the reply.

The only appreciable risk is updating to a firmware that has no downgrader.

You can watch these using a program called devhook.

What he said, the newest version can "simulate" different bios up to 2.71, giving the PSP all the functionaility that comes with that firmware. As you have a 1.5 already, their is nothing remotley damaging you can do with this, it's just a program that runs off the memory card - no firmware flashing mularky needed :)
