From today's press release:
...as well as news of an update that will allow the Xbox 360 console to output full 1080p games and video.
In addition, Microsoft announced that its fall software update, scheduled for release later this year, will allow all Xbox 360 consoles around the world to output game and movie content in 1080p resolution.
And the icing on the cake - the HD DVD player will be £90 in Japan!!!!
:notworthy
And of course they're Region 2 as well..... hmm..... :n0rty:

Apparently still won't be over HDMI, only component and VGA. Does a TV exist that can receive a 1080p signal over either of those?

Don't get me wrong, my TV can only do 1080i but hopefully this will put a stop to this whole "True HD" nonsense from Sony.
I'm fairly sure that the overwhelming majority of HDTV owners will not be able to display 1080p but it's good to know for future buyers.

Any WUXGA screen, eg the Dell 2405FPW or the 2407 revised model, or the bigger Apple Cinema screens, can accept either 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 VGA input.
Also I would imagine that there are a vast range of VGA CRT monitors that will run at that resolution quite happily.

I thought the price for the HD-DVD drive was £199?
No, that £199 price was from a retail source, not from Microsoft. That is equivalent to speculation imo.

Doesn't the new pioneer do 1080p over component? My 436 does 1080i over component, so I can't see why not.

That's the price in Japan - the bottom line is that Euro Xbox360 owners can explore the option of getting it imported if the UK price DOES turn out to be nearer to £200.
My guess would be that it'll be $199 in the US and £149 in the UK.
Pure speculation but I'll be astonished if the UK price is close to £100.

There's a thread already about this in the High-Def forums. Suggestions are that the price is going to be around $199 for the USA, £199 here and something like $90 in Japan.

£90 in Japan.
I just think that they'll be really pushing it to ask double the price in Europe - I for one will import it if it's more than £125.

Sounds like what I'm planning to do...

£90 in Japan!
I wish the UK shunned the 360 so we could get those prices.
Will they restrict the drives to work with Consoles from that particular region to combat it though?
If there's that much of a price differance then I think they will.
Never even considered buying the HD drive, especially at the quoted £199 price .... but under £100 is verrrrrry tempting indeed. :D

I don't think so. The Japan price has been anounced as roughly £100 so with import tax and shipping (it's a beast, almost as big as the 360 itself) you'd be getting up to the £150 mark which is what I think the UK RRP price will be. I'd guess the US price will be around the $180 - $200 mark.
And the icing on the cake - the HD DVD player will be £90 in Japan!!!!
I bet both the Japanese x360 owners will be well pleased ;)

Oh there's no secret that MS want to give Japanese consumers every reason to give in and buy one!
And I'd be astonished if MS try to lock a USB drive to a console from a particular region. But who knows....
And superstarbeejay - it's not even half the size of the 360!

Bodes well, I think, for a £149 UK price, which would be cheap enough to make me bite.

Is there not some kind of region coding on the actual disks? (like DVDs)

There is no region coding on HD-DVD. Yet..
Not to mention problems with the lack of HDMI output. Some discs could limit output over analogue to DVD quality. It hasn't happened yet but I for one would be wary of buying something without HDMI

Wasn't aware of that - I just assumed that it would be the same as 'normal' DVDs as there has been talk of the HD-DVD version on one side and the regular DVD version on the other. Hence I thought the normal regions would apply.
But the point is that Japan is Region 2 like us so it wouldn't matter either way.

Totally agree with this point - however there has been no suggestion that HDMI won't become available. I have no understanding of what the 360's output port can do but so far it's had Scart, Component and VGA coming out of it as well as Digital audio - I can only imagine that perhaps an HDMI cable could be an option in future?

MS consistently say they will make the 360 output HDMI when the market demands it, so not much to worry about I don't think...
Yes, but that could just mean a new revision of the console with HDMI output.

SO far no evidence of digital video out on the 360 and no evidence of a HDMI encoding, which has to be licenced per device. IMO HDMI means a new machine, probably with built in HDDVD.

Certainly for the next couple of years, the 360 add-on will be by far and away the biggest selling HD-DVD player - so I think the chances of studios hobbling HD support for a majority of the installed user base will be low to non-existent.
For similar reasons I would not expect Blu-Ray content to be protected either, since it would then affect a lot of PS3 owners too.

Under £100 plus region free DVD, I'm sold and I'm guessing many Japanese people will too!

Whoa horsey!
Japan will be Region 3 like USA? USA is Region 1, Asia is Region 3.
Although I must say I know nothing about HD Regions. I just assumed they'd be the same as present - didn't even know of any region free type info.
:?:
Theres to be 3 regions only for the HD era
Region 1 will consist of the U.S., Japan, Latin America, and East Asia (except for China).
Region 2 will consist of Europe and Africa
Region 3 will consist of China, Russia, and all remaining countries not already included in the first two regions.

Why does everyone hate Europe so much?
Because we've got France !

Play are selling both HD and BR movies for £18, if thats a bomb bombs are cheap thesedays.
As for region coding. The DVD part WILL be locked, has to be, the HD-DVD wont be as yet there isnt a region mechanism with HD_DVD, BR has 3 regions and is locked.
£18 quid cheap? i wouldnt pay 18 notes for a film myself no
