View Full Version : You spend HOW much on videogames?
In another thread, it was brought to my attention that I buy a lot of games. After going through my list of 360 games I've bought since its launch back in December 05, i've worked out i've spend £800 in the last 10 months.
Does that put me in the top bracket of insane gamers? .... I thought I was at best average, with regard to the number of games played by forum members but I assume others are more wise & hire and/or exchange a lot of games? .... I've so far, only exchanged one game & still own everything else i've bought. Should I be taking a trip to Gamestation in the near future & exchange half my collection for a new Wii perhaps?
So, what is everyones average monthly expenditure on games? ... Can anyone beat £80/month?
Also, out of curiousity, what is everyone's average number of hours gameplaying a week? ... Since purchasing my 360, i'd say i'm currently averaging 18hrs/week.
I only ever seem to own about 10 games at any one time (total of all the consoles/systems I have) but for the most part it is usually one or two new ones that I am playing, and some classics that I still play a lot and never get old.
So I either rent or buy new ones where I know I can take them back if I don't like them (legitimately :p). But it really varies as to how much, I'd say probably on average 2 a month, with keeping one of them maybe.
Although I've worked out a spreadsheet on what I want (and think I'll keep up till Xmas) and it works out about £250. Think I might need to have a more serious think about that as there's no way I can afford that.
£80 a month though (and you keep them all?). I think only Ono or Goblin will beat that :D

My average is around 4 a year for PC.
...and you keep them all?
Yup, twenty-seven Xbox360 games currently owned. :|
I only ever seem to own one or two at a time. It goes up slightly when I get a new system, but when the novelty has worn off, I tend to play one or two things at a time, and then exchange them when bored of them or they are finished. I hardly ever buy a game on release, either, but wait for it to drop in price. I'm not in a rush for new things - to emphasise, I bought a 360 last week and the first game I bought was Halo, as I never really played it properly.

As well as the 16 360 games I've bought since launch I've also bought 9 DS games , 4 or 5 PS2 releases, 2 PSP games and probably 10 new and used GC titles. Guessing an average price of £40, £25, £20, £20 and £12.50 respectively my total for the last 10 months is £1,090!
This doesn;t include my spend during that time on 2 x DS Lites, xbox live subs and over 5000 xbox marketplace points etc.
Lets hope the OH never reads this thread!

Just revised the total upwards! I think if I add up my total gaming spend this past 12 months including consoles, games and controllers it comes to approximately £1,850 or a mere £155 a month!!!
This is for me and my 2 lads though so it only works out a £50 per person per month! ;)
EDIT - I bet Ono spends more though!! :dork:

£536 since July on everything to do with my Xbox 360. That's for 25 games (7 of which are original Xbox games). Expenditure is diminishing though since theres only a few new games coming out that I want (Just Cause/Timeshift/Saints Row/Pro Evo).
I'd have a rethink about Timeshift. The OXM demo a while ago was really quite horrid, although in fairness it's had more time to develop since then (and needed it).
That is nuts  Do you replay them all much?
Not really. I've even got FM2006 that by the time I'd worked out the menu system & picked my first team, I got bored & still to physically begin my first football match. :?:
I've still got the two Halo games & Pro-Evo 5 that i've not even taken out their wrappers.
I might have a clear-out before the weekend & take a trip to Gamestation. Probably at least half-dozen games i'll never bother with again.
The games I've got for the 360 are:
Call of Duty 2
Dead Rising
Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion
Far Cry: Instincts
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter
Gun
Hitman: Blood Money
Prey
Project Gotham Racing
Saints Row
Test Drive Unlimited
Tomb Raider: Legend
Also buying Just Cause this week.

Although I just checked and it's been delayed till next year (30/03 according to Amazon)? Thought it was out November ish, oh well I can put that off then.

I can beat all of you. I am not proud of this believe me.
I have now bought over 1700 games and consoles in the last 3 years and have spent, about £3500 doing it. I sell lots too, so that's including money gained from selling stuff. I guess I've spent around £7000 on games in the last 3 years and obviously sold about £3500 worth off. My most spent in a month was £850 a couple of years back and would estimate I buy around 70-80 games a month on average. Of course, most of these are retro bundles and the like which go in the collection or get sold on.
I buy very few games full price or new. I've got about 5 360 games, 8 PSP and 15 DS games. XBOX, PS2 and older goes into the hundreds for most of the big consoles.
I don't play all of them by any means. I've probably got getting on for 50 sealed games now for current/last gen.
It's not something I'm proud of to be honest. It's nice to have a collection but I have loads of PS2 games that I have no regard for and shouldn't really keep. I cleared out my md collection recently and from about 300 cut down to bare essentials of less than a hundred.

Not technically the same, but I pretty much bought a £3000+ Panasonic 50" PHD8 High def plasma to compliment my Xbox 360.
In terms of games for it, I think I have about 10. I was going through seeing how many i've actually completed. It's about 50/50 at the moment.

Since January, I have bought
- My 360 and 5 games (although I only own 3 now after trade-ins and sales)
- 3 games for my PSP
- 2 Games for my PC
- 2 online expansions for EQ2
- paid for my monthly EQ2 subscription
- Also got and sold a DS, so only spent about £50 on that.
Disregarding the hardware (haven't upgraded my PC and had my PSP before), I have spent around +/- £420 over the year.
Online gaming is by far the biggest factor in not spending too much on games as it's an ongoing gaming experience that keeps me busy and not drooling so much for new releases.
Weekly gaming time must be around 25 hours+. 90% of it online and with my wife.

£8.99 a month x2 for World of Warcraft.
I only 'own' something like 5 games as I trade-in when I finish them, not into replaying whatsoever, the ones I've kept tends to be stuff that I like to dip into now and again online.

Possibly £100+ a month. In the last 30 days I've bought Dead Rising (£45 ish), Tony Hawk and Tomb Raider from the Classified for about £20 each. A Megadrive from Floyd (£25) a virtual boy from ebay (£60) plus around 5 games for it (£25)

Nah, every local GS hate me. They don't make any money out of me. I only ever trade in games that they pay stupid money for or offload retro consoles to them. Then I use the credit to make the most of their sales or buy new hardware from them which they make very little profit on.
Last year I bought a load of bogof FF games and DC games from them for between £4 and £8 then 3 months later they raised their trade in price for FF games to stupid prices (£18 iirc) so I traded my FF collection in (some of which I bought from the exact same store 3 months before).
Only got about 60 of those. Gamestation had a clear out last year 99p each so I bought every one they had. Some excellent stuff in there like the alien breed games, speedball 2 and the chaos engine.
I have to confess that I did own a CD32 when it was released and I wish it had done better. I remember owning games like Frontier: Elite II, Gunship 2000, Microcosm, Pirates gold, Liberation (I think it was called) and a few others.

Liberation kept crashing on me, but I had no idea what I was doing and somehow found everyone easily.
Microcosm was :gag:
Bump N Burn was a fun Mario Kart Clone and the Team 17 stuff (Esp Ten Pin Bowling) was fun.

I own 6 that im keeping ( GTA:SA, GTA:VC, PES 4, Tiger Woods 2004, God Of War, Resi 4 )but any others i buy i play and then trade in for others.
I complete them quickly and stick them on ebay. If the game was really good then I'll keep it, usually I just buy them again when they're dirt cheap in Gamestation.

have spent loads this month, just in a buying mood after months of abstinence.
so got a 360 and dead rising and then tomb raider and just cause (from work). and then broken sword 4 for pc, age of empires DS and god, some other games i forget what they are until they arrive - oh, 42 card games?
Generally only have about 10 games for each console and sell off when done. the DS has more, as mostly they are replayable. And the pc has loads of ganes that really i should throw as unplayable on current pc's.
really need 6 months off to play the damn things and complete them. :(
why does Ono have such a rep?
Ah, but that was the old Ono.
The new, more frugal, Ono, although still owning all the modern consoles and still being a collector of peripherals ( 3 x Guitar Hero, 3 x Taiko Drums, etc etc), no longer buys and pre-orders any old tosh to play on them. "Play" being a loose word - the expression "put them on a pile and forget about them" is better.
The current Ono still collects all things kooky from Japan but will not pay through the nose for them.
Inventory of consoles (can't be arsed to count the games):
1 x XB360
2 x NTSC Cubes ( 1 black, 1 Symphonic Green)
2 x Nintendo DS Lites
1 x PSP
1 x Green XBox
1 x PS2 with HDD fitted
2 x Sega Dreamcasts
2 x GBA SP (Famicom Edition and Boktai Edition)
2 x Sega Saturns
1 x Panasonic 3DO
2 x Megadrive 2
2 x N64
1 x SNES
Think that's it.
You can read about my struggles HERE (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=326130)
:)
EDIT: and I would like to add that 90% of my game time is actually on PC - and of that, 90% is on one game. (See forum at top of this page)
In the last 9 months I've bought:
Amped 3 - £50
Bankshot Billiards 2 - £10
Burnout Revenge 360 - £50
Call of Duty 2 - £50
Condemned - £50
Dead or Alive 4 - £30
Dead Rising - £34
Fight Night Round 3 - £50
FIFA World Cup 2006 - £35
FIFA Road To The World Cup 2006 - £25
Far Cry Instincts Predator - £40
Football Manager 2006 - £40
Full Auto - £50
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter - £50
Hitman: Blood Money - £40
Kameo - £20
King Kong - £30
Lego Star Wars II - £30
Madden 06 - £20
NBA Live 06 - £50
Need For Speed: Most Wanted - £50
Over-G Fighters - £40
Perfect Dark Zero - £30
Prey - £32
PGR3 - £31
Quake 4 - *traded
Ridge Racer 6 - £50
Saint's Row - £40
Table Tennis - £25
Tomb Raider Legend - £40
Top Spin 2 - £40
Total = £1217
including my 360 = £1567
Didn't realise I'd spent so much :|
Amped 3 - £50
Tomb Raider Legend - £40
Top Spin 2 - £40
With prices like that for those games - it makes my decision not to buy tattle easier.
My current inventory.
PC
Pro Evo Soccer 6
Xbox 360
Ridge Racer 6 (USA version)
Call of Duty 2 (bought 2nd hand)
Moto GP '06
Burnout Revenge
PGR 3
Prey (Promo Copy)
The Godfather (Promo Copy)
NHL '07 (Promo Copy)
Saints Row (Promo Copy)
The last game I bought for my 360 was Moto GP, and that was bought with trade ins. I can honestly say that the last game I paid retail price for (not second hand or trade in) was PGR3 on launch day of xbox 360.
I simply cannot afford games, but I'm fine with that.

At my peak, and considering I got 5 kids to feed, I was spending about £200ish a month on games/consoles/peripherals. Which is just silly. Most of it was on retro stuff, which I barely touch anymore, mostly because I've run out of space.
That said, I was perving on a PC Engine Duo the other day in a shop. I stopped myself buying it, though, which was difficult because it was Mint In Box. And I already own a Duo RX.

i have far to many games and spend far too much buying them, as for counting the costs, that's a scary prospect.
i don't usually trade in or sell stuff but have started to do so more now as i'm running out of space and 360 games are actually worth trading in.
in the last year or so:
psp + 9 games ~£300
360 + 10 games (traded 4 of the games for a ds lite) + lcd monitor ~£900 at a guess
+ a some each of ps2/ds/gba/gc/dc/xbox games
i must spend over £100 per month :(

Hmm, don't know really as I tend to buy most 360 games on the cheap and sell them on once I'm done with them, Saying that I've got 6 at the moment after a mad last week buying Dead Rising (£33), Saint's Row (£23) and Lego Star Wars (29.99). At the moment the 360 is my only gaming money drain. I still pick up the odd cube title on my 'to buy' list but there's only a few left I want, I've got around 30 cube games I think, most of which cost £5-10.
A few years ago I went a bit mad and bought loads of Japanese Snes and Mega Drive games, although most of them were only a few quid each they soon added up! I sold the snes collection when our first daughter was born in 2002 (for a nice profit as well) but kept most of the MD stuff after selling off the tat on ebay.
I definately have the 'hoarder/collector' gene inside me but do pretty well to fight it away, the thrifty/tight gene usually wins out :D Same with dvd's nowadays although I've still got around 500 of them filling out the house.... The thing is they aren't worth selling really as most are worth a couple of quid now apart from the boxsets.

I currently have £380 worth of pre-orders in from now to xmas. all 360 with 1 PS3 game.
Does that put me in the top bracket of insane gamers?
That depends. Do you finish every game you buy? Do you enjoy every game you buy? If not then you're just wasting money. You're probably doing that by not selling the ones you've finished (and won't replay)

That's definitely me. I don't like selling or trading my games. I don't trade my dvds and cds and there's plenty there that i'll never listen/watch again. I must own at least over a 100 films that i've never even watched. I've still got a sealed copy of House series 1 sitting in the same spot on a shelf in the living room, right were i put it when i got home from buying it and next to it an untouched copy of Table Tennis on 360 bought in the same transaction - June 2006. I suppose i can see why it could be considered a waste. :D
I reckon on average i buy around 25-30 new games across all formats a year (not counting psn/marketplace stuff). Then there's the consoles and peripheral stuff too. Mind you if i didn't get staff discount and a decent wage I wouldn't get as much as i do.

Well there is hope for you (but only a tad). 100 DVD's is around £1000 wasted if you spent an average of £10. If you used that to pay off your mortgage you'd be looking at maybe £1500 less to pay.
I've bought about 2 Games brand new (Crackdown and Halo 3). A couple second hand (GRAW 2, Dead Rising), the rest I rent until I find one worthy of a purchase or receive from inlaws as a Present. £10 a month is a bargain for renting 360 games 1 at a time IMO.
COD4 will be a purchase though :D

4 games, plug and charge kit, VGA lead, and a wireless pad.

I spend £15 a month on swap game + the occasional purchase (e.g. Halo 3 and Pro evo as I will play these for a long time)
Prob averageing about £40 per month but get to play loads of different games.
Renting is the way forward

Yup, twenty-seven Xbox360 games currently owned. :|
Erm... I own about the same amount and they've all been purchased in the last ten months, and so has the console.... It's never occurred to me how much I've spent, but I'm putting a stop to that thought process right now! Off-hand I would've said it was easily less than £800, but now I'm not so sure... gah!

Don't feel alone TonyG, I keep all my games too. Every last one, unless i hate it with a passion, then I go back and exchange it for something else, but keep that. To my credit I only have a handful of games averaging less than 7/10 for game reviews, so it's mostly decent titles I have (or atleast, I enjoy and that's the main thing).
Gaming is my only vice so i can just about afford it. Besides, I'm a collecto-maniac, and I like keeping a game library. It's nice to look back and play a few older games now and again. It's better than relying on memory of rose tinted glasses, that's for sure.

I'm a collector. Some have been bought in bulk hence a few dupes. Some have been bought unboxed and then I've bought a boxed version later. I've stopped for a while as I've run out of room. The Virtual Boy is next to me at work at the moment...

Certainly been racking up the 360 games in the last few months with so many quality releases recently and the run up to xmas. Never bought so many titles for a console before, just wish I had more time to play them.
Not good at waiting for new titles so tend to buy them and then not play them till a while after.
I do sell some games 2nd hand but sometimes I cant be bothered as you pay £35 for a game and 3 months later have to sell it for a tenner including postage.

I've prolly spent over a grand on games in the last year or so. Sold a load though.
I also keep a 360 as a spare in case one goes tits up (I'm on my 6th console now). :dork:
I don't tend to buy DVD's anymore anyway so the outlay is no different really.
Bought my 360 in December 2006, and I've estimated it will have cost me £800 by this December. £550 hardware/accessories. £250 games.

I wait till games get cheap now, they arent worth £40 IMO.
me too. prices drop pretty quickly these days on all formats. use gamestracker to keep a list of "wants" and track prices that way...

Got an 360 2 months ago. Bought 4 games for it, 2nd hand, so about 120 euro in the past 2 years.
Probably about £30-£40 per month, not including outlay on the actual consoles themselves.

I lost my receipt for a DS a while ago that I had to send back to Nintendo.
I phoned Game and they send me my entire history of purchases (swiped with the reward card) and it was scary.
It came to 7 pages long and started with PS and N64 stuff, right the way through to the 360. It ran into the thousands, but it was all worth I reckon.
The scariest thing, was that was just the purchase history from only one shop.
Got some freebie stuff today and not one of it was on my 'to buy' list. :( I am actually going to have 'to buy' it all instead.
