View Full Version : Shaolin Soccer
Have the urge to gamble on this DVD.....what are people's views on it? What's the re-watchability factor? Are the subtitles ok? Where's the best place to get if from?
Cheers :)
For an HK DVD it's very good, the anamorphic (rare for HK discs!) transfer isn't perfect but it's very good, no real moans and the DTS soundtrack is very impressive. There are some minor niggles in the subtitles, but it's not a problem really..
You can get it from www.dddhouse.com for just under £10 delivered :D
Buy this film, it's an absolute laugh riot
Where d'ya get yours from Rich? How much?
Heh I was just editing my post as i forgot to include that info!
There you go!
Ta mate, am very tempted. Just wondering whether it will ever get an R2 or R1 release....

The worst aspect of the DVD IMO is the intro movie bit that plays everytime you have to select the main menu.
Can get quite annoying after a while.
Great film though.

Disney/Miramax have bought the worldwide rights and plan to give it a U.S. cinema release in the spring.
So, your in for a wait if you want R1/R2.
Get the HK R0 it's great and highly re-watchable. ( and it's cheap! )
check out the dvdtimes (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=324&story=2272) review, I picked mine up for 6 quid ;) :D
definatly get it!! don't wait! :)

Indeed this is an excellent movie... some excellent humour and some amazing CGI...
My main gripe about the disc is the bloody Shaolin symbol that appears during the movie every time the 'follow the white rabbit' type feature is available.... This only happens with the subtitle track on, English or otherwise.
I have a copy on order from ********* because of the good things I have heard about it from the other forum members.
I'm looking forward to this one.

I ordered it aswell along with Battle Royale, Nice Review over at DVDTIMES.
I showed a couple of mates and they thought it looked good, but as soon as I said it's subtitled they couldn't be bothered with it any more!!
What gives? I gave the RING ago and after a while you don't even realise your reading subs!
Oh well they're loss, can't wait for them to arrive. Ordered from dddhouse

I have no probs with subtitled movies - but it still can be disconcerting having to have your eyes shunted to the bottom of the screen for most of the movie.
I really like this film - and at the price of around £10 it's a must buy. The version I got was region 0, BTW, and not region 3 as widely advertised. Sometimes the subs are a little abstract, and the picture quality occasionally slips, but overal it's a superb package!
Everyone - Buy it now!
Any other recommendations? I have heard talk of Binmonchoo(?) but know nothing about it. I was lucky enough to see the uncut version of The Isle at the Prince Charles before the BBFC refused it a certificate - interesting, although not my favourite film.

I really can't recommend From Beijing With Love enough!! Another first class Stephen Chow film & a HK spoof of James Bond.
The films older, so the DVD isn't going to be quite as stellar as the Shaolin Soccer film, but it's cheaper & the film is tops.
Shoalin Soccer is in my Top 5 films of 2001.
Superb, funny and well acted.
Subtitles?? Pah. Learn Cantonese FFS!!:D
