OK as no one else has posted yet I thought I'd start a fresh thread just for the pics.

All mine are a little random but than that's what I shot. I wanted to overcome my fear/embarrassment of snapping strangers and so here goes a sample of all sorts.

Really like the Tib Street Horm shot john. Was that a single image post-processed at different exposures or did you take multiple exposures at the time?

I'm sorry I missed this - looks like it was a good day.

johndavis0

Cheers Warren and liamail the Tib Street Horn was from a single exposure post-processed at different exposures (no tripod) and was taken with hdr in mind mainly because the horn itself was in shadow

a single exposure post-processed at different exposuresI tried this the first time I'd heard of HDR (was the first time I shot in RAW to get the most possible data for post processing), but I remember CS2 complaining about the images and their exposures, so I've never tried it since (i don't own a tripod yet). Is there a certain trick to it? What software are you using to assemble the final image?

johndavis0
18-09-2006, 21:08
I use the photomatix software from http://www.hdrsoft.com

The downloadable demo can be found here (http://www.hdrsoft.com/download.html) but the final image from this is watermarked

I like the sky in your Beetham shot stu (w) - I didn't get anything like that from my shots of the tower that day.

Stu g - that first shot doesn't really work for me - there's a bit too much going on, and I'm not sure about the crop you've chosen - the last one is a belter though - I like the dividing line you've made of the glass wall of the cafe.

I think of it as 1950'a scifi type robot, you need someone in the forground running in terror from it. Plus the fact the robot hasn't been defaced by graffiti or fly posters adds to the surrealness of the scene.
One question, were the light leaks (the white patches at the bottom left and right) deliberate post processing or is your Isolette not light proof?

John C

I think of it as 1950'a scifi type robot, you need someone in the forground running in terror from it.

I think I get where you're coming from with this - I plan to wander through the Northern Quarter again one morning, so I'll see what I can do with it.

One question, were the light leaks (the white patches at the bottom left and right) deliberate post processing or is your Isolette not light proof?
Just my inexperience with rollfilm, sadly. It's from not winding the exposed film tightly enough - this frame escaped fairly lightly, compared to this;

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/john_the_monkey/248460261/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/92/248460261_b0d42cb659.jpg" width="500" height="495" alt="Pot O' Stones" /></a>

or this;

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/john_the_monkey/248458698/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/81/248458698_146a6d3289.jpg" width="500" height="495" alt="Jamie Woz 'Ere" /></a>

Depsite that, I'm pleasantly surprised - I'd expected much worse results from my guessed exposures and hamfisted attempts at judging focus distances. The trickiest thing by far is the viewfinder's field of view, which seems to show more than actually ends up in the frame.

sideshowbob

I think those are very good, John, particularly the latter. If anything the light bit adds rather than detracts from the shot.

John C
22-09-2006, 10:05
Sounds like a plan :)

The B&W shots are all done on Ilford XP2 400 (colour process B&W film), and I think 1/200s and f/22. (Should be 1/400 at f/16, so as the highest speed on the shutter is 1/200, the aperture goes up one).

There's a handy table of the cheap/deluxe lens and shutter combinations on this page;
http://www.cleanimages.com/Article-MediumFormatInYourPocket.asp
(Mine's a cheap version - Agnar lens and Vario shutter).

I think I have a roll of XP2 somewhere, I'll try it on my Ross Ensign. JC, were you using the Sunny 16 rule for exposure or having a light meter to get readings?

John C
22-09-2006, 10:55
Sunny 16 Boink! - the only exception being an indoor shot I took (not posted) that I did for a laugh - I used the OM-10 as a lightmeter, and did a bulb exposure of 1 second (it was blurry, but nicely exposed) :)

I'm really pleased with the XP2 - the tonal range is great, and I can get it developed & scanned with my normal stuff (I've ordered more, plus some in 35mm). If you can't turn up your roll, let me know and I'll pop one in the first class to you so you can get shooting - I really want to see what that ensign can do :D

Thanks, I'll let you know. I have some 120 negs from 1979 I took with the Ensign on a school cruise around the Med somewhere. This really does mean I need to buy myself a film scanner.

I've had a look at my 120 stock and all I can find is Fuji Provia 400F (E6), Fuji 400 NPH, Kodak Portra NC 400, two rolls of generic Kodak C41 negative dating back to October 1998 and a single roll of Ilford FP4.
If that offer stands for the XP2, I'll take a roll and if you want I'll post you back a roll of the Kodak Portra & a Fuji NPH.

Need to buy some more b&w film, 120 and now 35mm.

Sure it does Jon - send me a regular mail or a flickr mail with your postal address and I'll stick a roll of XP2 in Monday's first class for you.

I've heard people saying on the film groups that it pushes very nicely as well - I'm going to try a roll at 800 next time I'm out in town, I think.
