2 kids presents to think about this xmas.
my kids love the Gamecube & have many many games (if not all)
will the new wii be backwards compatible & play the gamecube games, if so i'll get my preorder in this week with Game.

excellent news, that solves a few problems this xmas.
anyone know when Game will take preorders?
I know Play.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://playcom.at/thedvdforums) & Amazon.co.uk (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/redirect-home?tag=thedvdforums-21&site=dvd) are doing so, but i'd rather get one from a high street retailer in case one packs up over xmas.

Try the preorder thread maybe, where this is all being discussed?

I m betting this thread will get closed, but for the record (I seem to have written this about 200 times today) Nintendo have not discussed allocation with the retailers yet, but there shouldn't be a shortage.

Anyone taking money for deposits now, will not guarantee you a console.

GAME will take preorders when they know their allocation. But you can get down to the local store and put your name on a list. They will call you when they will accept deposits....

My question (which no-one may know the answer to) is can it play "all" GC games - I have loads of cube games form the States and Japan, and obviously I need to use the FreeLoader to load em - will I be able to play them on my Wii or not?

If I can, then I'm there at launch (From the States obviously!)

My feeling on that is that the Cube games will be region locked as well. Certainly from a PAL vs NTSC perspective.

May get away with NTSC-U and NTSC-J compatibility which would suit me to the ground as I plan on getting a US Wii.:D

Even if it is I'm still gonna keep my cube anyway, so I can always fall back on that to play the games on - would be nice though :)

The fact that the Wii plays GameCube games looks like a positive to me... and so I was thinking to getting one for kids at xmas.. I popped into GAME this weekend to find that they dont seem to stock GameCube anymore ??!

Depends. If you get a US Wii then it'll play your US GC titles. What you seem to be asking effectively is "Will Freeloader work on the Wii?". I think it's to early to say with any certainty. Clearly it'll play GC titles native to that country.

I'll be re-purchasing Wind Waker and maybe Super Monkey Balls then ;)

If you've already finished SMB 1/2 then you may be better off buying the SMB3 game that's available at launch

I'm going to keep my cube for the GB player!

Much as I wanted to get a Wii on launch I think I'll sit back and wait for others to import from the US and see whether the games/internet features/virtual console is region protected first.

 Wouldn't it be cheaper to sell it and buy a second hand GBAsp or DS?

I have both actually, a GC is not really worth selling I bet I'd get about a tenner at trade-in so what is the point. I quite like playing them on the big screen

If Nintendo Europe are saying the PAL Wii will be region-locked for Wii games, I imagine (in much the same stingy way as MS has done for the 360 backwards compatibility) they'll keep the region locks in place for GC games.
