View Full Version : Why did you choose the football team that you support?

Following on from a couple of recent threads, what made you choose the club that you support now?
Although I was born in Watford and lived in Hemel all my life (where the vast majority of support is for Watford), I support Luton because my dad used to take me to games from the about age of 5 and there's no way he'd have let me become a Hornet :D. Caused a lot of conflict whilst at school (and I still get aggro today over it), but I wouldn't consider supporting anyone else.
Also, if you support more than one team, who would you side with if they drew each other in a cup game?

Yeovil Town. Was born here. And have lived here all my 30 years.
2nd Team is Liverpool, was the team everyone followed at School when I was 8. Always been the 2nd team ever since.
Yeovil v Liverpool - FA Cup 4th January 2004. In the Yeovil End. Took me quite a while to 'forgive' Liverpool for the way they behaved in that game.

Grew up in Fallowfield in Manchester!
Manchester has only one team!
That's about it, family support the Blues!
I Love City
My mum watched United through the 50s and 60s, so became a United fan at 7 years old.
Got taken to Chelsea V QPR at Stamford Bridge as a kid and supported Chelsea ever since, still remember walking up the stairs to the Shed End and the view as you got to the top.
Grew up in S.Manchester, everyone at school supported City when I was about 7 or 8. I hated the light blue strip and liked to be different so started following Utd.

Aston Villa because when I was 9 I moved to Birmingham and lived on Trinty road, the road the ground is based on.I was just getting into football so I started following them.
David Platt and Tony Daley where my favourite players to start with.
Liverpool...
John Barnes, because as a young black kid going to a racist school...he was a God. Everyone supported Villa and Blues and since I couldn't fit in, I may as well stand out.
God I took some kickings for that decision.
Not having a father and being left footed meant I could tell everyone he was my dad.
Was taken to Hillsbrough at age 7 for first time day of Bradford fire. Still go with my dad who went to games with his dad. From Rotherham but always been a Wednesday family, which doesnt go down well here. Season ticket holder every year since 1989.
When i was a kid i wasn't allowed to watch football. My Dad was a Rugby man, so he wouldnt have it in the house.
When I grew old enough to start to realise there was this game out there (when I went to prep school aged 10), I started to get to watch a little bit on the school's telly every now and then.
There was a team that played the game beautifully well, called Liverpool. I used to love the way they passed the ball. The rest is history.
(when I went to prep school aged 10), I started to get to watch a little bit on the school's telly every now and then.
Prep School?? School had a telly?
I'm gonna start calling you Little Lord Fontleroy;)
My Uncle took me to my first Spurs game when I was too young to remember - always supported them since.
I don't live that close to the ground but I tenuously live in London (just) so that's good enough for me! London's a big place mind...
Brought up in the Cotwolds. Nearest big club nearby was based in Birmingham (about 40 miles away). Villa had some great players in the late 70's - early 80's so chose them over the other midland clubs.

Born in Newcastle, lived there all my life. Never understood people having a 'second' team. :?:

Lived on the IOW all my life and the 2 'local' clubs are Pompey & Soton - When I started getting into football and wanting to go everyweek,,I chose Pompey, as they were nearer, cheaper/easier to get to, The Dell was a ******** and at the time Pompey were Division 3 and Soton Division 1 so it didn't fee3l like joining a bandwagon.
My second team is Hamburg SV as they're the local side to where my mum came from, and I've actually followed them longer than Pompey, but Pompey are my local team and the team I've seen the most, so get precidence (not that they're likely to play each other anyway). Also have a soft spot for West Ham as one of the apprentices there stayed at my gran's guesthouse in the early 70's and used to play football with me when I was about 5 (no idea of his name though:() and gave me some hammers stuff like a scarf and badges.

My grandad was a southend Utd supporter.
Lived here most of my life
Always followed them, from moving to another town (then back sharpish) to my time away at University
Put up with jokes about it for most of my life, ('Who do you support?' 'Southend' 'No I meant a proper team. I mean a premiership team.')
I dont understand people who have second teams

I dont understand people who have second teams
I can if people move from one end of the country to another and still want to regularly attend matches (as in the case of a friend of mine who supported Notts County whilst growing up in Lincoln then moved to Hemel and picked Watford). Don't agree on his choice though :p
Same applies if the second team is several leagues lower/higher than the first. I would say Hemel Hempstead FC are my 2nd team, but as they're in the Southern Premier league there's unlikely ever to be a conflict of interest with my 1st team.
Worcester City because I've lived in and around Worcester all my life and Aston Villa because it was the first stadium I ever visited ( albeit not for a footy match! ) my dad supported them and I guess they are my 'local' premiership side... I wouldn't call either my second team - room enough in my affections for both ;)
Sadly only one of my children has taste... he chose the Villa because the Worcester City youth coach had connections with Villa Park and took the kids to play in the academy there. My youngest initially supported Celtic because he liked the kit then switched to Arsenal because he liked their kit... he is currently toying with Tottenham's kit! The oldest supports Man Utd because he doesn't like losing...

2nd team for me though is just the next team's score's I check. I've never choosen Liverpool over Yeovil for anything. Liverpool could be playing the biggest game of their history, but if Yeovil reserves are playing I'm there

I support United because my Dad did. I had little choice - I was dressed up as a 'Busby Babe' to win a competition at Pontins when I was 1. Sure, I would love to support someone more local to me, but once you truly support a team it is impossible to change IMHO.
He started supporting them because of the Munich air crash and the wave of sympathy that brought on. Also, he resented the fact that his Uncle made him queue up for ages Spurs cup game tickets while his Uncle was off somewhere else so he was determined to support someone other than Spurs, who were his local team at the time.
Well that's nearly 2 full pages now, and.....
1) The most supported team is Liverpool
2) Not one Liverpool fan has said "I support them becuase I'm from / live in Liverpool" so far.
Q.E.D.
It's not too late though. My cousing grew up in Southampton supporting ManU. Then one day, without any notice, he just ripped down all his Ryan Giggs posters from his bedroom wall and started supporting the Saints. That day, the child became a man.
'Nuff Respect!

Back on topic, I'm a City fan. I was born 1 mile from Maine Road, and used to park my car in the hospital car park where I was born and then walk to the ground to watch us play.

1975 and I didn't really follow footie but a friend of the family 'Uncle Barry' used to drive the England and Fulham team coaches to all their games - in the cup final that year, having seen 'Uncle' on TV driving the Fulham team through the gates at Wembley I said, "whoever wins will be the team I support" and so it was West Ham!
Had a soft spot for Wimbledon in their Non-league and early years as my dad knew the guy who was the kit man and used to get us tickets every week and I'd go to their games as they were localish until I was about 25 - but since they moved I've not been interested
Always look out for Crewe because I know Dario Gradi
My son who's 5 supported Chelsea for a year but liked the new Man U kit so now he supports Man U...and Chelsea....and West Ham.....and England!

You really do have bee in your bonnet about Liverpool don't you...
Remember in your last thread you associated Liverpool with thieves. Perhaps the locals haven't been been able to steal a computer and the internet yet to get on here...
;)
Liverpool - growing up in Dublin in the early 80's there were two teams Man U or Liverpool. My dad, his dad, all my aunties and uncles (there are 13 of them) on my dads side supported Man U ( I am named after someone who scored the wining goal for Utd in the FA Cup final during the 70's). I decided I didn't want to support Man U for some reason and I picked Liverpool and have supported them for well over 20 years now. My dad was not pleased. I think having his 6yr old first born tell him that I wanted to support Liverpool broke his heart. I have 3 younger brothers 2 of whom are nutjob Manu supporters and the other is a Liverpool supporter. But for years I was the black sheep of the family, my dad used to buy my Man u jerseys to try and persuade me to support them but I never did. When my younger brother started supporting Man U my dad gave up on me and left me to it.
Now I live in London it's not too bad but during the 90's when Utd were on the up and Liverpool were a bit crap it was horrible being me in my house. My brothers and parents just loved rubbing it in.
I was brought up in a village outside of High Wycombe so I naturally started to support Wycombe Wanderers. I don't go anymore as I can't really afford it but I have supported them from the slanted pitch at Loakes Park right through the Martin O'Neill :notworthy glory days and beyond. After a couple of disappointing years things are looking up with Paul Lambert in charge. Come on the Chairboys.

That'll be Stuart Pearson then?
Not wanting to be pedantic .... but he never actually scored the winner for United in a Cup Final. He did however score the first goal in the 2-1 win over, ironically, Liverpool in '77. :dork:
My Dad and Grandad took my brother and I to Selhurst Park back in 1990 to see Palace draw 0-0 with QPR. I was 10 and although the next game I went to was also a 0-0 (Villa), it didn't put me off! :) My Dad grew up in Bromley and we lived not too far away at the time so it was just my local team plus the family history of supporting them.
Several exciting seasons of ups and downs with some massive highs and lows and my Dad, Brother and I still get our season tickets and go each home game. Tis a nice way to see each other and catch up now we all live in different locations.

My older cousin was a hyoooge Arsenal fan and some of my earliest memories were of him forcing me to chant along with him ... "Arsenal are magic, Liverpool are tragic!" My punishment for not going along with his wishes was the old 'booby-trapped chewing gum packet'
Me being me rebelled against these threats and always ended up telling him that it was in fact Liverpool who were magic and that he would find it was Arsenal who were indeed tragic.
This caused me many a bruised finger but my allegiance to Liverpool has stayed with me from then on. I can't say that I support them as I have never bought any LFC merchandise nor have I been to watch a single game but I do follow their results, I cheer when they win and I get annoyed when they lose.
The ONLY footer game I have ever seen was Shrewsbury Town vs Oxford Utd on 5th Jan 1985 where the mighty Shrews were beaten 3 - 0. A group of us were taken there for a mate's birthday treat.
That officially makes Shrewsbury Town my first team.

Reading fan all my life.
From the dim and distant days when we got promoted from the Canon 4th division around 84, 85 to the dissapointment of losing the playoff final 10 years later.
All the up to the defeat of Man City last night - always have supported them, always will.

born in plymouth there were only 2 teams to support , liverpool and man utd.
there was a kick about on our street and it was utd fans v liverpool fans. as it was the late seventies there were more liverpool fans than utd so i went on the utd team and have stayed loyal every since.
It was bleak in the eighties but the last 13 years have made up for it.
I wanted to support the best team in the country, and that's Spurs. That was that ;)
I don't really know why I started to support them. My dad does, but he never really tried to get me interested in footie, let alone a particular team. Still he must have had some influence, it's must have just been miniscule. I was born in Tottenham and moved to Enfield when I was in Junior school. All my friends actually supported Liverpol (glory hunting $%^$). I think just watching them on TV made me love them
Older brothers supported Liverpool, so started watching the games since the age of about 6. Been hooked ever since.
My mum watched United through the 50s and 60s, so became a United fan at 7 years old.
Colchester? :?:
Does make me laugh how 'united' fans say just that and pressume that you will know who they mean as there are no other clubs with united in the team name.
I'm a Forest fan as I was born in 1976 in Nottingham and obviously it was the time of double winning European Cups etc when I was a young nipper and that was it. Didn't know County existed for quite a few years :D
Went to my first game in 1990 against Spurs where we lost 2-1. Then went to more that year and then the following May we reached the FA Cup Final.
Got a Junior Red Season ticket the following year as it was my last chance before I turned 16 (adult price!) then had a year off then had one ever since then. This is my 15th year as a season ticket holder, 14th in succession.
Boy have I seen some high's and lows! Finishing 3rd in the Premieership, Quarter Final UEFA Cup against Beyern Munich (last British team left in Europe at that stage) to losing 3-0 against Yeovil last year.

We don't share the same dad do we?
To be honest I'm not sure I ever was a 'true' United supporter in that I only got taken there a few times when I was younger and followed them as a kid because of my dad.
When I moved to London 6 years ago I wanted to support a London club, and had always kept an eye on Charlton in the past after noticing them when Curbs and Gritt took over.
I finally could afford my first season ticket at The Valley 4 years ago and really feel like a part of the club - I live and breathe everything they do and go to as many games as I can and I love it. :)
Unfotunately I'll always have a 'turncoat' label seeing as it wasn't the club I grew up supporting, but I'd wager a lot of people who've 'supported' a club all their lives haven't been to as many games as myself in the last few years.
Especially watching some of the crap I have to sit through!

Dad has always supported Palace, ditto his father, so I guess it's in my blood. Never really sorted out my allegiance until about 10 years ago though, because my cousins supported Spurs and I copied what they did. But then I found myself drifting towards Palace, and when two mates got cheap season tickets I thought I'd join them and I didn't miss a home league game for about five years after that. Don't go much these days, but I still love my Eagles.
I would say Hemel Hempstead FC are my 2nd team, but as they're in the Southern Premier league there's unlikely ever to be a conflict of interest with my 1st team.Good to see that there is life outside of the league. My team's in the BGBSLPD (!) and it's great. It's like an alternative reality. I've been lumbered with the job of press man for away games and I even have the managers mobile number. There aren't many fans that can say that

There's normally some one closer though. What's wrong with Plymouth Argyle (aside from the obvious) ? What about Southampton or a London club.

Well.....Born in Nottingham so obviously don't support a team from there.
Wen't to a few Forest and County games when I was little, aswell as Lincoln City. This While I was supporting Man Utd as my big club.
However when I moved to Peterborough I saw the light, and decided not to be a glory hunter, thus West Ham is the team I follow. Been to alot of Peterborough games being my local team, and my best mates dad having a box so get in for free! :)
But West Ham now and wouldn't have it anyother way I love the way they play. Been Claret and Blue since I was 14/15 :P
For me it was the FA cup replay against Man City........well, that and Burkinshaw, Villa, Ardiles, Hoddle, Archibald, Perryman, Waddle, Mabbut, and Clive Allen.
Colchester? :?:

Exactly the same as me. Wonder if it was the same village? I miss the trips to the Valley End :(
I didn't choose. The club closest to where I was bought up was, by default, the club I support.
Seeing as that club is Millwall, i'm slightly bitter at the moment :D The way things are going the club won't exist in 5 years.
But hey, I'll take it over being a glory hunter any day of the week.
Exactly the same as me. Wonder if it was the same village? I miss the trips to the Valley End :(

Brighton - was my local club and wanted to go and see some 'real' football. Dad liked football but was a Man Utd fan for no apparent reason (the same as many thousands today), so took me along to the Albion. I was hooked and we went for many years together. Like many, he is long since a 'lapsed' fan but I still go.
Kept a season ticket despite moving nearly 200 miles away to the Bristol area and still made 40+ games a season during my first few years up here. Life changes though and a solo daytrip back to Brighton is a rarity now due to the cost - moreso the time than the money. I'll never support anyone else though and get to all the games I can.

Every generation of my family has supported The Rangers. It is with pride that I continue the tradition.
I grew up in Lancaster in the North West. Every one in primary school supported Liverpool, Everton or Manchester United at the time (that said the Silver Foil liverpool badge seemed to be everybodys most wanted Panini sticker!). I chose my team partly to be different but mostly because of Hoddle & then Waddle, but never Diamond Lights. I also naively thought that the club was quite cosmopolitan (probably just the London thing) until i moved down south and started attending matches.
My brother who is 5 years younger started off supporting Liverpool, had the kit and bed spread and all that but after years of sharing a room with me & possibly a bit of bullying, he realised he was a Tottenham supporter when he listed Sheringham, Anderton & Mabbutt as his 3 favourite players in the premiership.

Sunderland.
Its the nearest team, and pretty much all the family support them. Also the team where my uncle began his career.
Flackwell Heath was my village.
Oh well, it was worth a shot :( I'm from Penn.
i tend to follow wolves being born near wolverhampton but over the years a have become more a fan of good football so i tend to look for and watch teams like manu chelsea liverpool etc, any game thats looks like it might be good. don't mind who as long i get to see nice football
Have to confess that up the age of 14 or so I 'supported' Man U as it was my dads team. I guess it was normal to support a top team at school (though the ******* didn't win anything much back then). My mum couldn't drive so I couldn't get any grounds anyway....
I lived in Cirencester most of my life. A guy at school regularily went to Swindon games, Swindon being the local league team. So I somehow blagged a lift with his dad and after that first live game I was hooked. So now I am a Swindon Town season ticket holder. I now despise the local 'I'm a Chelsea/Liverpool' fan who never actually get to see their team play ever except on TV.

Easy choice for me, really. Blue is my favorite colour, and Chelsea didn't exist to me at the time, so I've been a Toffee since I was about six.
As for another team, chosen because the mascot is the bigger cousin of the breed of dog that I own; JEF United Ichihara Chiba (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JEF_United_Ichihara_Chiba). The mascots are Akitas Jeffy and Unity (I own two Shibas). Good enough reason for me!

I was brought up in a village in Cumbria where the nearest league club was 3 hours drive away, everyone at my school supported Liverpool (almost all) or Man Utd (a few) but I supported Nottingham Forest because my family has a tradition of being Forest supporters as they are all from there.
Don't really understand how you can have a second team as well, I suppose if you're embarressed about your first choice you could

My family are Glaswegian Catholics, I had no choice.
But my god I'm so glad I am. I promise you, there is somthing special about being a Celtic supporter. Can't explain it.
That had nothing to do with football.....
You wanna bet?
First game I went to was a Rangers match. Nothing to do with religion thankfully (no time for all that nonsense). One of my Dad's colleagues at work knew his boy was mad about football so took me along to a game at Ibrox. Football hadn't been that big a thing in my family and with my Dad originally from Southampton it wasn't easy for him to take me to see his team.
I was young but still well remember climbing up the steps into the East Enclosure and seeing the pitch for the first time. Supported Rangers home and away across Scotland and Europe ever since. Have enjoyed some fantastic moments over the years and hope to enjoy plenty more in the years to come.
