View Full Version : New Barenaked Ladies Album - Are Me/Are Men
Anyone heard this yet? Direct Link to Amazon.com Page (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000H1RG2M/thedvdforums-20)
Its out tomorrow in the US and for about a fiver I'll probably pick it up but was wondering if anyone had heard any tracks from it yet and can comment on how iit compares to their older stuff? (Please no slagging off of the band - let keep this on topic!)

Nope, not heard anything yet, but I've got the 2 CD limited edition on pre-order from amazon.ca.

To be honest, I'm not at all impressed with the way they've handled this.
You can have the full thing by buying it from iTunes (US)
You can have half of it plus a live album buying it from Nettwerk (physical CD)
You can have half of it with no live album (physical CD in store)
You can buy the other half next year on physical CD
Except if you're in Canada when you can buy it on physical CD this year from Starbucks
FFS. I just want to buy the two halves of the record on CD, now. (Barenaked Ladies Are Me and Barenaked Ladies Are Men) How hard can it be? :|

It's a bit crap how they've sorted it - those of us who have ordered the physical CD + bonus accoustic CD (for a reasonable £7 or so from the website) only get the first half of the album. However if you buy it from itunes you can get the full thing.
I'm probably going to source the full thing from somewhere, as I know I'll be buying the CD next year. I've already been listening to the first album (with my actual copy on the way) and to answer your original question, I like it, but I'm not sure how much.
It's quite different and much less poppy than the previous few records. This is the first time they've all participated heavily in the writing + recording procedure, so it's a broader album. Kevin and Jim each have a track of their own, and Kevin's work is audible on most of the tracks.
I haven't found myself disliking any track yet, and the opener is a great sing-along track. Everytime I drift away from BNL I just end up loving their new releases anyway.
If you like the four tracks on their MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/barenakedladies) at the moment, then you can't go wrong with the album - particularly as it's so cheap.

Don't forget that if you buy the first half from iTunes you get a further 2 bonus tracks, grrr.
I bought them at 99c each from their own site - you get the mp3s which you're free to do what you like with. You can't buy them seperately on iTunes.

Very serendipitous, the 2 CD version of BLAM finally turned up at work from Amazon Canada this morning. Half way through the first disc so far, and liking what I hear, although it's a little different from their usual in a way I can't quite put my finger on yet.

Having to wait for the 1 CD version to buy for myself tho :)
And woo! Southampton once again, joy.

The 2CD with the bonus live disc was only for pre-orders, wasn't it? Is this what Amazon Canda are shipping as a 2-disc?
This is all so damn stupid and confusing. I still haven't heard Barenaked Ladies Are Men, either, as I've no way of buying the physical disc. :|

2 CD didn't have the bonus live disc, otherwise I'd have got it. It was only the 1 CD that came with the bonus live, which is why I went for that one.
Really sodding annoying as I can't listen to the 2nd disc until it comes out separate. Just had a quick trawl of barenaked.net and it certainly seems popular.

The Amazon Canada two discer is Barenaked Ladies Are Me plus Barenaked Ladies Are Men as a limited edition. 25 songs total, which I think is everything minus the 4 download only songs?
Edit to add - I'm assuming that this is the same version that was supposed to be exclusive to Starbucks in Canada re: Mike's original list above. How Amazon Canada got a hold of it, I don't know.

Presumably, Nettwerk will do a 2-discer which is Barenaked Ladies Are Men + Glenn Gould Live version of BLAMen? Gah.

It's just come up on the Corn Exchange website. :) Booked
Didn't pre-order this like last time and I've only just got around to listening to it. TBH I'm finding it hard work, there's nothing instantly catchy (or at all catchy) in there. I'm not against the slow stuff, some of their best songs are beautifully composed slow songs. However this seems to border on the bland.
What's BNL are men? Is it just live versions of the same songs? This may be the first BNL album I don't buy :(

Barenaked Ladies Are Men is a completely different set of songs.
MetalGearAl
24-10-2006, 09:26
Just think of it as two different albums, created + released at the same time (except you can't get the second half on a physicaly CD on it's own yet, grrr).
Which is a shame as I want to hear BAMen as it seems to be the favourite of the two amongst fans.
Even a bad album of theirs won't stop the live shows from being absolutely fantastic, picked up my tickets for the Southampton gig yesterday :)

mikegray, MetalGearAl, looks like you're both in luck.
Someone over at barenaked.net who appears to have a contact in the German record company has news that Barenaked Ladies Are Men in all set for a European release in February with all 16 missings songs (12 from the second CD of the deluxe Are Me and the 4 download only songs).
Which means I'll have to buy it for the last 4 tracks. :D
Roll on April for the UK tour, the setlists from North America look amazing at the moment.
MetalGearAl
14-11-2006, 22:44
But I've already bought 2 of those download only songs, the gits :D
Gah, February though? Ages away :D
Watched a clip of the "dance" after Angry People today and it made me a) want the second CD and b) want it to be April :)
And yes, I agree the setlists are looking great. Some Fantastic has been played, and at my first few gigs of theirs I would have killed to have heard that played.

Can't say I'm liking the new album that much. It's a bit of a grower and after a few listens I do rather like Running Out Of Ink and Fun + Games (song of the album, IMHO) but it's all a far cry from Maroon and despite the two albums totalling something like 27 songs, they feel like 27 half-songs.
Still, looking forward to the gig in April as they put on a good show. Speaking of which, if anyone is thinking of going to the Southampton gig on 1st April, I have two tickets for sale as 2 friends can't make the gig now. Can offer under the face value as they're still on sale, really need to shift them as I can't afford not to!

Oh yeah, was going to mention that, seems like they've stuck all 4 on. I needn't have bothered buying and dloading the 2 that came with the last album.
What do you think to the new album mike? I find myself skipping certain tracks; Something You'll Never Find is rather dull and just goes on and on. Not a fan of One And Only either.
Didn't pre-order this like last time and I've only just got around to listening to it. TBH I'm finding it hard work, there's nothing instantly catchy (or at all catchy) in there.
Let me explain something about me, some of my favourite songs were initially viewed, by me, as not much cop. After listening to Are Me over the last year the album has grown on me and I now actually think it's MUCH better than Everything to Everyone! I'd probably say it's even better than Maroon and ranks along side Stunt and Gordon as their best albums.
There are some brilliant songs in there, and some lovely lyrics ("Ever since we said our goodbyes, the onion rings, the phone makes me cry"). "Home" is just awesome, the kind of track that you skip back to listen to again (much like "When I fall"). Even the "weak" songs, like Easy and Bull in a china shop are listenable. Even Kevin Hearn gets two songs on this album. Love his voice, reminds me of Damon Lindeloff, from Lost.
I'm just sorry I didn't come back and rectify my post sooner.
I doubt anyone here saw it but Steven Page was one of the people who did the canadian version of "Who do you think you are?" (that genealogy show), couldn't find it anywhere :(
Also, BNL are following my favourite band (They might be giants) by releasing a kids album on the 6th May.
Just started to crack Are Men, not very catchy, a bit bland..........

Have watched Steven Page's episode of Who Do You Think You Are, was interesting stuff.
I'm still not a huge fan of BNL Are Me(n). There's some decent enough tracks on them though of course. Some of them though are really skippable, particularly Something You'll Never Find which just goes on and on. I can't see them eclipsing Maroon tbh which is a personal favourite.
Definitely give Men a listen as that has Fun & Games and Running Out Of Ink which are brilliant and the two stand-out tracks.
Also thought the relase of Snacktime was parallel to They Might Be Giants, who aren't too dissimilar from BNL really. Wasn't sure if I was going to order it, but if it's only a fiver, I'll bite.

I can't really comment on Men but the track you mention is on Men and I can't really defend that. What tracks don't you like on Me?

To answer your first part, the Internet. Same way I saw the All-BNL episode of Canadian Idol :)
Towards the end of Me I drift off a bit - Take It Back, Vanishing and Rule The World With Love are all "ok". As popular as it is, I really don't like Wind It Up but can't quite figure out why.

I saw the CI show fairly easily but I looked everywhere I knew and couldn't find WDYTYA!

ARGH! They only take Visa or Mastercard!
Damn damn damn!
OMG, very bad news people!
Steve Page has left BNL and is starting a solo career!
I just saw this on Digitalspy and their headline was "Barenaked Ladies singer quits band", I was hoping it wasn't Ed Robertson, but to have either leave is a pretty big blow. I don't know what happened because I saw something on YT recently about them doing a new album.
One thing I loved about BNL was the fact they all seemed such genuinely nice people and good mates and I felt they wouldn't feel the need to split up. Apparently Steven Page is going to do some solo stuff and theatrical work, but it's a shame he couldn't do that as a side project.

I saw it on Youtube in the end
Nooooooooooo!
It's not BNL without both of them :(
I'm gutted - I wanted to take my kids to the next tour.
Very very bad news.
Hopefully they'll reform at some point.
Edit : I preferred Steve's vocals too - I've always thought he was a very underrated singer who never got the recognition he deserved (Not from the band or fans, but from the wider world). Maybe that's why he's left :(

Looks like it. By some accounts his "midlife crisis" has turned him into a bit of a selfish arse.
Pretty gutted about this actually. Been following BNL since 1992, first gigs in January 1993, at least the Glasgow show on the last tour was great. Just need to wait and see what happens.
92? Wow, I only really knew them post-One Week and I probably only knew them because I watched The Box.
I think "selfish arse" is a bit harsh, he should do what he feels is best for him. I'd rather he did solo work than carry on in the band if he's unhappy.
Page is hugely underrated but so are BNL. I do prefer Ed Robertson, his voice is more humourous, Page tends to do the darker stuff. I love both but what makes BNL unique is that sense of humour.

Erk, not sure how I missed this news. Haven't really been keeping up with BNL lately.
Can't say I'm too surprised, with what was going on last year it looks like he was in midlife crisis mode... splitting up with his wife and the drugs arrest (the exact details of which are rather cringeworthy and shocking).
Out of the two I've always loved Steve's writing and singing more. Ed's a much nicer and personable guy in person mind you.
Having said that, his solo album The Vanity Project was a great release and I'm eager to hear his next solo album.
Might just stick their best record on to listen now, which we all know is... Maroon ;)
