The films are stored at 1080p. The first generation of player will only output 1080i, but decause HD displays are progressive by nature, the picture that's displayed looks as good as though it were a 1080p - there were some reviews that confirmed the same thing. If the films were stored at 1080i though, then there might be a noticable drop in quality over 1080p. Also, there're very limited numbers of screens that will accept 1080p - most of the 1920x1080 screens only accept 1080i.
