View Full Version : where can i get a Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS from?!?
Tried all of my normal shops and there out of stock or are charing a premium for them (£100 more!!!) I ideally want to see on in the flesh first and try it before buying it, so havent tried the likes of warehouse express. Is it okay to get an expensive delicate lens delivered by the likes of the royal mail?!?!
Im looking for places in surrey ideally but would travel up to London.
Any help appreciated :)
i just had a look and you're right cant find many anywhere... one seller on eBay with 4 for about £1100.. what sorta price should they be??

if you want to have a play with one mate, you are more than welcome to have a mess around with mine, richmond isn't too far from epsom, just dive though kingston and out the otherside. Or could meet up somewhere for a shoot.
and if you want to buy one, i can reconmend Kerso  from POTN, Ian, he is based in america, but ships from scotland, and it only cost me £1070 including postage.
I'd guess you don't really need to see it...it's every bit as nice as you'd expect.
Not going to be sharper than an f/4 version though....except at f/2.8 ;)

Thanks toothless i had remembered your kind offer, i want one anyway, so i suppose in essence i dont need to see it ;)
Im not quite there with the cash in my pocket so really need to go UK, and i still have concerns over warranties and stuff, if it was a normal lens with no IS i wouldnt have any concerns
or is there really nothing to worry about other than giving over a grand to a complete stranger?! ;)

well i wasn't worried as it wasn't my money :p
But no to be honest Ian is a top top man, has much much respect over on the POTN forums, and he was quite happy to phone me from the US and chat for 45 mins about it all, went through everything, any concerns or anything he was happy to answer. I mean yeah it is a bit daunting just handing over that much money, but he does it for his buisness and isnt there to rip anyone off.
I did have the same concern about what if it was faulty when it turned up or anything like that, he said out of all the 70-200 IS he has sold, only one of them had a problem, and he changed it over straight away and said if there was to be a problem, which was unlikely (and there wasn't) then he would get another one sorted out ASAP.
So really there isn't anything to worry about it, i know GJ just ordered his 1dmk2n from him, and i am sure he didn't have any problems either. Its the best price you are going to get in the uk for a new lens, so if you can afford it, get it, it really is an amazing piece of glass (although you might need to work out in the gym for a bit, its a heavy one too)
i can vouch for him too- done just short of a grand his way this month! :)
Thanks guys, i have emailed him for some more info etc, how long are we talking about for deliveries once payment has been made? Only reason i am asking is that im off this week but at work next week.
Looks like it could be the way to go, i would save around £250 from the prices you have quoted toothless, which isnt to be sniffed at.
GJ didnt get his camera from him in the end, i emailed GJ and asked the other day ;)
Special Delivery which is guaranteed before 1pm... but took a few days to process my order so if you're quick you can have it for the weekend :)

stuv on the POTN forums says he's got some on order with Canon. Once he's got them, he'll be selling for £900 + p&p. I've nevr used him myself (although I do use someone similar who deals locally), but know that Busterboy has. The thread he mentions this in is here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=207932).
Thanks, hes also just posted hes going away for three weeks, lol
I too have just bought from Kerso. Absolutel first class service.
how long does Ian take to respond to emails normally? (not sure what the time difference is)

No that's shiato storm that's going away for 3 weeks (unless Stu has posted somewhere else).
oops didnt look over to the left - DOH!
I don't think Ian is at his PC every day but the afternoon I was emailing him I got a response in a few minutes. Took much longer using PM on POTN forums
Ian has replied and i have emailed him back, thanks for the info guys you have put my mind at rest (well a bit anyway ;) )
The potential saving i am looking at is just short of £300, which is not to be sniffed at especially since i will need a new bag once i get hold of this beast!

;)
hehe thanks for the offer mate, but i already got a CompuTrekker AW which is pretty much the same, but takes my laptop as well, i dont mind using that when travelling, but if i am heading out to a one day show or weekend then i like to take my AW400 i think it is, i left it over the road for the min, but it is just a half decent sized shoulder bag, holds the 20D with grip, 10-22, 17-85, 70-200, 1.4x tcand the 580EX at a push, but i have to keep the lens and body seperate, which i dont like too much, would like to be able to just pull out the camera and shoot. I think it was something like the Magnum AW (http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Shoulder_Bags/allWeather/Magnum_AW.aspx) i was looking at, cant remember exactly. But looking to the future, want something that can hold 2 pro bodies and 4 or 5 lenssssssssssss :)

but, but thats one of those side bags!!! :gag: ;)
My 650AW is my fave bag shame it has no helium filled floatation device as with 2 cameras, 5 lenses, flash, light meter and a laptop you end up a couple of inches shorter on one side.
For going lite I find I can get 70-200IS attached to a body with a converter extra lens and a flash into a Crumpler long Schlong. It's a squeeze but it's exactly the gear I want when going lite. A grip or pro body is a push but doable. I had to mod the bad removing the internal separator.

yup yup :p i like them, i know they are a pain to carry, but make getting at you stuff so much easier, rather than having to take the rucksack off, and then stick it on the floor, unzip it, mess around, and then do the reverse  Just easier to pop the top and then everything is at arms reach :) imo (which counts for nowt :p)
Ian is going to call me today
Out of curiosity which bank will i need to visit to deposit my funds? (Need to make sure if there is one close to me)

Thanks for all the reassurances :)
Well it has arrived with the wife back in the office this morning so im itching to get home!!!
Just got my hands on this monster, picked the cardboard box up and though, hmm thats not too heavy, on the camera though is a different story! :D Need to build those muscles up!
For those with one of these beauties do you leave the focus distance on 1.4? it talks about faster focusing in the manual but doesnt really say if thats on the 1.4 setting or 2.5, im guessing the later.
Will get some photos up later.
Only downside is i now need a new camera bag!!!!
:D

Same here! The 1.4m thing, are you talking about the focus limiter? Got one on my f4 presumably it depends on what you shoot, if you normally shoot more than 2.5m distance then makes sense to leave it on that for faster focusing.
Hope you'll post some examples when you've finished testing it?

Yeah you are right there mate, if you have it on 2.5m then it wont hunt down in the lower end of the range, so should focus quicker, but lets be honest, it isn't a slow one anyway, so doesn't really matter too much.
And yeah tell me about it, my bag is rammed to the brim :(
Ive only got the Lowepro slingshot and i cant use it as a slingshot with it mounted on the camera. I can only fit my 50 f1.8 and flash in there then as well :(
Might have to go look at some bags tomorrow :D
Thinking about getting one of these from the USA - does it include the hood and pouch?
Hood and I guess you'd describe it as a case rather than a pouch. Certainly not the sort of thing you'd put in another camera bag. Also you get the tripod mount ring which I don't think you do on the F4 70-200.

Thanks for that. So you just carry it around in its case and attach the lens when needed? Any other suggesions for carrying this lens attached to a 30D?
