View Full Version : Sky HD - is it worth getting?
Considering getting it as have the cash spare at the mo and a new HD TV - but looking at various threads on other forums it sounds pretty crap and people are cancelling.
I've heard only Sky Sports is good but I dont sub to that - so is it worth getting?

If you dont subscribe to Skysports then i'd say no.....the Films are ok and some of the Docu channels are also...bear in mind its still in its infancy so there isnt a great deal of stuff filmed in High-Def..., I think its great but then again i love sports so , if you've spare cash ...go for it...then you're "future-proofed" ...

I would second that, cricket and Football look good in HD. Some of the football games look better that others but overall its pretty good.
Sky One HD is poor, most of the content is SD upscaled and not true HD.
I cancelled my movies subscription as most of the so called HD films look no better than DVD. There's also a lack of movies with most being shown over and over again and very few of the premieres on the main movie channels getting shown in HD.
So overall if you are not a sports fan I would wait until Sky drop the £10 subscription.

Does the Tosh upscale and how much are the discs?

Yep it does - supposed to be better than the OPPO.
Disks are £10 - £20.
The Toshiba will only play NTSC dvd's though.
As I had the spare cash i decided to get HD anyway to go with my HD-DVD and 360 MCE on my new LCD.
Anyway after having to e-mail the CEO twice my HD premium channels and Sky+ functionality were finally switched on 4 days after installation. :| This got me £67 compensation though so nearly 7 months free HD. :p
I was expecting the picture to be really crap but its actually better than expected on the BBC and Documentary channels. The films are mostly better than upscaled DVD but not as good as HD-DVD. Sky One is complete crap though - crap american imports heavily compressed in 'low def' HD.
If i didnt have the spare cash i would have been v disappointed with it.
The lack of content is also crap but they did tell there would be 18 HD channels by Xmas...

We did warn you....if you dont have the sports....which by the way are excellent...i wouldnt say it was worth it...
Ive had mine a week, and allthough some of the HD channels are good, i dont think its worth anywhere near what they ask for it, and if i didnt sign for a year i would have asked for my money back, thank god i had a cheap HD box, because if i had paid £300 i would have been upset.
Value for money 2 out of 10
Not enough proper HD movies or channels, and they are taking the mickey asking £50 odd a month.
Is it me or does the BBC channel look better than allmost all of the sky channels.
In fact just rang sky and cancelled it, they said i can cancel october the 9th need to have it a minimun of a month.

As a "premium" service, SkyHD is disappointing.
A lot of people having been saying "Ah! Stop moaning! It's early doors!", but for a £300 box and £10 p/m I expected more.
All of the Sky HD channels should be at the max possible bitrate, and all the movies should be OAR 5.1.
Heck, even for the football not all cameras are HD!
I am only keeping it as the football is better than SD (I watch on a projector), and the BBC content is increasing. There are also some purdy-looking nature programs on Discovery & Nat Geo though.
If it was just for films, I think I would have gone for a HD-DVD player.

I agree with everything above, apart from the footy, that should be banned.
one of the reasons sky is so expensive i reckon.
Ive not hooked up my 5.1 system to it yet, but are any of them 5.1 ?

Most films are in 5.1 on SM9 + 10 HD and some films on BBC HD.
