ok so this isn't gonna be one of the most popular of threads but it gives me a good excuse to keep popping back :D

Not too bad of a start yesterday, think we held up quite well and didn't deserve the loss...but we really need to convert those chances :(

Looking ahead I think we may struggle a bit this season, but I've got much faith in PJ :notworthy (well his good eye for potential and motivation abilities, his tactical decisions leave me a bit :?: at times though) just hope his magic wand's good enough to work on Heskey :D

The Squad -

Fitz Hall is like a poor man's Rio Ferdinand. He tries to play Hollywood balls all the time but they never come off. He can be a good defender when he concentrates but just didn't look interested when playing for Palace last season.

Emmerson Boyce on the other had is a fantastic defender and was easily Palace's best player last season and won the fans player of the year award. He isn't great going forward (although I think he has improved that part of his game over the last year) but is a very solid defender who will rarely get beaten.

He might!

Heskey probably won't score many, but he will hold the ball up and play in Toddy who will.

Personally, I'm gutted we've let him go (Sveteslav Toderov), but at least it's only a loan, as he's a great striker imo - already got 2 for us this season from 1 start and 2 late sub appearances.

I'm glad Toderov has gone to Wigan, hes in my Fantasy team and I was worried he wouldn't get a game at Pompy!

Not looking good for Wigan now. Mind you, they might only need any kind of win at Sheff Utd next week.

Which in Wigan's current state isn't an easy thing to do especially considering Sheffield's home form

True, but it's a one off game, anything can happen, Wigan have to believe that! Look at Reading today

I didn't even realise we had a Wigan thread :suspect:

Tommo on Sky was quite critical of them on Sky today saying that they missed many opportunities to get people forward into the box. Personally I can't see Wigan getting anything at Sheffield United so the old second season syndrome will strike again.

Yeah, second season seems to happen to a few teams, it's like they get found out in the second season and have no plan B. A warning to Reading for next season.

Whelan probably pays him £7.20 an hour and has him sweeping the warehouse of JJB sports on his days off............

I'd be interested to know what Wigan fans think of these two after almost a season. In my opinion Palace's defence hasn't looked back since we lost these two as we've been so much more solid this year without them. Possibly a little unfair on Boyce, who probably would have enhanced our defence this year, but I'm so pleased that we lost Hall, and still can't believe Wigan paid £3m for him.

no...not at all. I think if we managed to scrape through and couldn't sort it out next season it could have disastrous consequences for the club...we really need to improve our fan base and I think another uninspiring season in the prem would do more harm than going down

 - not quite working out with the big man is it?

no but I can't fault his commitment :) he's been the best of a bad bunch

hedgie - I've been quite impressed with Boycie (compared to the others...that's not to say I think he's great ;) ) BUT I don't think he's anything other than a lower table player.

I would like nothing better though than to see one size leave asap along with Kilbane :| and a few others

I think Jewell made some huge mistakes with his signings trying to get some known players in and I don't think they'd 'gel' however long they stayed. I wish Jimmy and Kav hadn't left :( they got a bit of stick sometimes but the team played better as a unit with them and I suspect got on a lot better with each other off the pitch...

Unlike Staurt Pearce at Manchester City I couldn't see Jewell parting company with Wigan.

Anyone know why he went off on one towards the end of yesterday's game? I thought he was pretty close to grabbing the fourth official by the throat.

Alan b

Probably just the pressure of the situation or perhaps he though the decisions were going in favour of Sheffield United.

Much like the JJB for a home game. ;)

If we ever got into the position where we had to reduce the allocation given to away fans I'm sure it'd be a bit different then ;) but yeah it is a bit :(

sad to see Jewell go, I doubt we would be where we are today without him. He has taken us as far as he can...and that's a long way ;) but Hutchings FFS :brickwall

that is cheap as chips, but do you think wigan will sell out now? I know its primarly a rugby town but is there support there if the prices come down?

Alan b
18-05-2007, 16:26
I guess Wigan are hoping that these low prices will attract more people to the club and there is no reason why those prices will not, after all everyone likes a bargain.

It would be interesting to compare those prices to some of the 'bigger' clubs.

I think we had about 12000 s/t holders season before last and it didn't really increase much last season. It should increase significantly at those prices but I'm not convinced it will sell out. I reckon it'd take a good (ish) season to recover from the last one... we'll prolly get more daytrippers in who don't want to commit because the gate prices are cheap enough anyway now

I think (again...I'm crap at remembering stats and figures) we have the highest or one of, percentage of young supporters in the prem and it's just a matter of time, waiting for them to have kids (that won't take long  ) and take them...it's only just becoming cool to support the local team at school without getting laughed out of the playground by the Man U and Liverpool kids

So....basically I don't think it will sell out but we have the potential support in years to come :) wasn't that long ago we were averaging 5k ish...
