Its the beginning of a New Year and I'm going to expand my cinematic mind. After being exposed to the horrors of Scary Movie1 + 2, Pearl Harbour and Charlie's Angels over thae last couple of years I need something different! OR I'LL GO:nuts:
So can anybody recommend me any dvds, of any nationality, genre, region, any weird little gems that have been denied widespread recognition. Anything at all please!
Cheers!
:clap:Happy New Years!
:o"Let old aquaintence be forgot, something, something,... monkey!":o
I recommend Battle Royale.

Anna Magdalena (http://www.dragonsdenuk.com/reviews/anna_magdalena.htm) is well worth a watch, as is Grave of the Fireflies (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=109&story=1780). If Fireflies doesn't convert you to Japanese animation, nothing will.
EDIT: Oh yeah, Ginger Snaps (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=364&story=2324) is a little off the beaten track perhaps, and not to everyone's taste, but well worth a look if you're into that sort of thing.
Two films of last year that were slightly overlooked because they weren't 'blockbusters' are Requiem for a Draem Unrated R1 and The Dish R4. Both delightful movies in their own distinctive ways. I urge you to check both out.

Amores Perros might be worth checking out!

Requiem for a Dream is a brilliant film. I wouldn't describe it as "delightful" though!
May I reccomend "Waking Life" to you. Cool kind of semi animation kind of thing.

I'd suggest:
Shaolin Soccer R3 (very funny - available cheap from www.dddhouse.com)
Akira (Japanese manga - there's a good R2 coming soon)
Battle Royale R3 (cheap from dddhouse)
Series 7: The Contenders (R1, or very cheap - £4 - from dddhouse)
Almost Famous / Untitled (R1)
Moulin Rouge (R1/4)
...well... in the past few days I watched a bunch of 'difficult' films, including
- the harrowing Clean, Shaven (****/****) ( http://www.filmcritic.com/misc/emporium.nsf/ddb5490109a79f598625623d0015f1e4/9e95ed8abd1529118825677b00046183?OpenDocument )
- Tom (Lola rennt) Tykwer's much-praised Der Krieger und die Kaiserin - which I would give the alternate title of Two Somnambulists In Aspic, it was (or seemed to me to be) that slow (a fine German DVD of a beautifully made, well-acted movie, but still only **/**** in my book)
- the Criterion Edition DVDs of Jean Cocteau's precious Orphée (***/***) and oh-so-precious Le Testament d'Orphée (**/****)
- Josef von Sternberg's OTT The Scarlet Empress on the Criterion label (****/****) - they don't make'em like that any more!
...and - to lighten my generally grim mood over the year-end holidays - the DVD of The League Of Gentlemen - Live... that was included in the very last mail delivery of 2001 that the postman brought me (******.../****)

You could do a lot worse than pay attention to your signature. Mulholland Drive is out on Friday. :)

Together (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=CinemaReview&id=21&story=1960) - It's a great film and a lot of "proper" film critics have put this in their top 5 of the year.
Chungking Express and In The Mood For Love are both good and the ITMFL DVD is excellent.
If you really want your mind opening, try Careful (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/other/careful.html)

The R2 of Requiem is in HMV sale for £9.99.
A few that Id recommend are:
Hong Kong cinema
Jackie Chan stuff for incredible fight choreography and 'real' action
Director John Woos stuff is pretty different from the norm
Japanese
Takeshi 'beat Tikano flicks including Brother & Hana-Bi
Ring & Ring2
Audition
Im sure there are loads more, but these should get you started.

Cheers fellas! I've already got Requiem for a dream and thought it was pretty good, I'm going to try Pi next. Heard a lot of good things about Battle Royale, Amores Perros and Shaolin Soccer.
Clean, Shaven sound very intersting, cheers Hendrik!
As for Mullhollend Drive, I'm already there man ;)
Cheers everyone!

As for Korean films, Shiri is frequently mentioned, but I would recommend - Nowhere to Hide (the Spectrum korean release and NOT the no-doubt dreadful Tartan release), Memento Mori and Peppermint Candy.

I'm into really, really surreal films, where all monkey hell breaks loose! Top stuff!

Thumbs up for The Dish, and incidentally, the region 2 version is the one to go for if you want the extra extra which I believe is an interview with Sam Neill.
Although not exactly overlooked, The Ninth Configuration is the most under-rated film I know of.
...I'll gladly second Mister Chalk's suggestion to watch Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin's Careful and add his Tales From The Gimli Hospital - both are very weird (and very funny, too!) ... also suggest you give Dave Borthwick's Secret Adventures Of Tom Thumb a chance - more weird stuff, very weird...

i'm not going to spell this correctly for the sake of being a dumb ass, but one surreal film i've seen recently that springs to mind is
"The Discreet Charm Of The Burgoise" -- which is on a really good Criterion disc. All Monkey Hell may not break loose, but it's certainly a film that is surreal, and will leave you wondering what you've just watched... there are some other surreal films in the back of my mind, but the names aren't at reach.
Audition, is certainly a film i remember where all monkey hell breaks loose!! :)
