I think trance is one of the crappiest dance sub genres, although Sasha's "Xpander" is a corker. Shame I've never heard it while under the influence... ;)

its the cheesy rubbish that polluted the charts that gave trance a bad name

Artists like Sasha, ferry corsten paul van dyk and tiesto have produced some awesome stuff over the years

Oakenfold used to play some blinding trance sets as well..

I have listened to a lot of non chart trance and it's rare I hear anything that gets me going. Some of that last Tiesto mix was good, though I'm not keen on Tiesto as an artist.

Union Jack - Two Full Moons & a Trout

Check this track out. It's probably 15 years old now but it defines what trance was like back in the day.

'Operation Blade', Mas.

Think it was the track they used in 'Club Blood' in the Blade movie.

That was a remix of New Order's "Confusion".

'Operation Blade' just rips off the sample and puts some wannabe bad boy MC shouting crap over the top to ensure chart success.

Didn't know that.

Must admit, Operation Blade is one of the few tracks that I will actually stop exercising for to skip forward if working out to a dance/trance CD!!

EDIT: Christ, I've just hit a milestone post-count! Time for a baby-sandwich  !

My favourite is still Josh Wink- Higher state of consciousness - probably too commercial for you guys.

I don't like using the term trance at all as it is all essentially dance music. I like a lot of what is being posted, but have always been a breakbeat or big beats type person.

Children is a horrible tune. One of my most requested as a DJ but most refused. :D

Not too keen on Flaming June, but BT's Loving You More is one of my fav tunes of his, but Bullet in The Gun I don't like at all.

Wink's Higher State is a quality tune (as is the remix). If you like that then check out Access by DJ Misjah and DJ Tim. A little bit harder but along the same vein.

Probably the best trance-like DJ for me is Carl Cox. I've been a fan since the late 80's, then through the drum and bass era and he is still rocking out with some heavy underground stuff to this day. FACT Australia is one of his better mix albums you can buy and some of his Essential Mix stuff is the definition of what the trance genre should be about.

Just played Children and Flaming June out of interest and I forgot they are near identical  , you're right actually, not as good as I remember.

Forgot to add :-

Out Of The Blue - System F
Endless Waves - Kamaya Painters
Papua New Guinea - Future Sound Of London
Carte Blanche - Veracocha

Stuff around 1999 always sounds the best to me though, really decent trance always seems to take me on a musical journey and don't think anything musically will awe me as much as when I first heard tracks like Sasha - Xpander

Only just seen this thread after a search for "Hybrid", whilst listening to Hybrids new album, I choose noise.

Castle Trancealot - Indoctrinate is (only slightly) surpassed by the B - side "The Gloom" Patrick Prins is an absolute genius.

Look at Way out West, Hybrid, Early BT and most remixes of BT's work for great early trance.

Best trance tunes ever?

Difficult, but I would say either:

BT - Loving U more (and mixes)
Hybrid - Theme from wide angle
BT - Remember(Sasha mix)

Best trance track ever made, ever in the history of all the world:

Energy 52 - Cafe del mar (Three 'n one mix)

Honourable mention must also go to Way out West - Ajare

Booka Shade are kind of trance-ish. Maybe. :D I reckon their "Movements" is my favourite album of the year. Try "In White Rooms".

VapourSpace - Gravatational arch of 10

It's the only name I can remember from my early 90's trance days. Second the Union Jack Track as this is a classic, a great reworking of the Lil Louis(?) base line.

Firstly, Splobber never thought you are a fan of Trance...good on you !

Weird really, I'm nearly 40, haven't been in a night club in the UK for over 10 years and I love/collect trance tracks.

All the names mentioned so far are cracking introductions to trance music, I would add the name of Armin Van Buuren to the list, his album A State of Trance 2006 is brilliant and well worth checking out IMHO.

Off this album Karen Overtons rework of the Electribe 101 "Your Loving Arms" is sublime to the extreme.

Oakenfolds Perfecto Fluro album is amazing also, it not cheap but worth checking out

Too many tracks to pick out in my top tracks, the one that is played way too loud in my car is:

Synaesthesia - Thrill Seekers

My favourite would have to be Age Of Love (Jam & Spoon's Watch Out For Stella mix)

Honourary mentions to:
Cygnus X - the Orange Theme
Art Of Trance - Madagascar
Paul Van Dyk - For An Angel
Binary Finary - 1998

Said before but i love:

William Orbit - Adagio for strings (Ferry Corsetn Mix)
Bullet In The Gun - Planet Perfecto

I'm with Splobber in that Its always been hard for me to describe trance, some of these I wouldn't put in that catagory. In the end I just call it all dance (where as my mum still calls it "Boom Boom Music") in that sense I would have to throw in Flip and Fills Shooting Star and Happy Hardcores Children Of The Night.

Ferry Corsten - Punk // timeless classic, as with all the above. Sadly, Trance doesn't seemed to have progressed since about 2003. Its just 2005/2006/2007 remixes of all the above.

You might want to try the Gatecrasher Red & Black albums...
