Inspired by a long iPod session lying flat on the floor due to a bad back i got to wondering of the best examples of songs that somehow sound better when listened to on a more intimate basis through headphones.

Does anyone still regularly listen to music this way? And i don't mean as you're jogging, studying, shopping etc. But actually devoting time to listen to music.

I had my iPod on shuffle but two tracks that stood out for me were:

Jimmy Eat World - Disintegration: It's one of my faves but somehow the slow tempo, the staccato drumming and vocals lift this song to different heights when listened through headphones.

Ladytron - Beauty: Blissfully sombre yet vibrantly colourful. (WTF! is this the painkillers working? )

I'm sure there's loads of songs out there of all genres. Let's get a definitive list going.

Unless I'm at the pc I listen to all my music on my Grado headphones.

All Tool albums should be listened to with headphones. Also Dead Skin Mask by Slayer is beauty through headphones if you've never heard it before. "Let me out of here Mr Gein...."

Voodoo Chile by Jimi Hendrix. It sounds like WW3 is going off between your ears.

Lots of the Super Furry Animals stuff - There are some strange little sounds before tracks that you don't hear properly on your stereo. 'Play It Cool' being one of them.

I'd go for Radiohead's Let Down. Crackin' stuff.

Anything by the Beach Boys.

Awesome is the only word which does the harmonies and layers justice! And all on an 8 track....

Glad someone else has noticed that too! :)

I'd agree with the Massive Attack and Radiohead tracks already mentioned. I'll add Adam Freeland's "Burn The Clock" and Sasha's "Xpander". Basically anything with either **** loads of bass or good movement between channels.

Chill Out by the KLF is a must for headphones

(and if anyone can recommend anything like that i'd be most grateful)

Martin Grech's albums. There is so much going on in the mix that you just don't get unless you're listening through headphones.

Madonna's new one is also killer through the cans, especially Future Lover.

Can't wait to get my new headphones system up and running.

They say a £200 pair of Sennheisers and a good headphone amp will out perform a £3000 pair of speakers!

I think Dark Side of the Moon will be the first cd to spin.

A safe choice.......

I often listen to music in bed with just headphones before going to sleep. There's something about the darkness/silence around you combined with the music directly in your ears, that always makes it a better listening experience as you are so much more focused on it.

It's usually Radiohead/The Smiths/Cardigans (Long Gone Before Daylight) or anything I have on my phone.

'Meat Is Murder' by The Smiths is a good one, as is 'Feathers And Down' by The Cardigans.

I spend a lot of time reading these forums and rarely post, but after the purchase of some nice new earphones I've felt inspired.

Just sitting listening to the live Wilco "Kicking Television" and needed to share with you just how good it is. I think I remember reading about it somewhere else on the forums but it led me to a question for you all...

Top 5 albums to listen to through good earphones...

I'll post mine as I discover them over the next while.

There is already a thread somewhere but what are your earphones? I'm looking to get some new ones but they'd need to be wireless.
