Hi,

Don't know if they've been seen before, but the new Total Film (Feb 2002, Issue 61) p.132 carries an advert from a horribly expensive R1 import service called US Direct, but they seem to have a really nice picture of the forthcoming TNG boxes. Anyone got a larger version of this or can confirm whether it really is what they'll look like... very silver and shiny if it is the case!

Mike

how much are they going for?
Do you think the price is right?

Looking like being about £85-90 RRP with them being available online for around £70 if you shop around (www.dvd.co.uk being the current leader, I believe) for the R2.

However, R1 pricing is yet to be announced, and I'm hoping we'll see some downward movement... plus, there's always the possibility of R4 being cheaper, too.

I'd say the full position will be clear within the next three weeks or so as soon as US retailers start adding it to their sites so we can see the pricing.

The pricing is bad enough (sadly comparable to the likes of X-Files, Buffy, etc.), but to release a set every two months in tantamount to commercial suicide. Only the diehard Star Trek buffs will be foolish enough to stump up £70 minimum every couple of months just to have TNG on their shelves.

If I buy them, I'm going to wait for R1 and R4 as the last poster said. They will undoubtedly be cheaper than R2 for starters. Also, I'd stagger buying them, waiting maybe 4-6 months to buy the next set as with Buffy, X-Files, etc. I knew Paramount were greedy SOB's, but their release policy on this titles beggars belief.

They can’t release these bad boys fast enough for me. I don’t see how the release schedule should affect anyone who doesn’t want to buy them immediately. No-one is forcing you to buy them the day of release so what’s the problem? Pick them up when you want to.

Pricing also seems eminently reasonable @£60-£70 for a full season.

Maybe my enthusiasm is explainable in that I will not be buying any of the other series’, DS9 and Voyager, so ST:NG and OS (when released in season sets) will be it for me.

I really want to collect this series - not fussed about Voyager or DS9 but will wait for some reviews - with Paramounts track record with the movie releases I don't trust them not to completely muck it up again.

I do strongly feel that they won't muck this one up. The demographic cross over of people who will write letters and Star Trek fans would mean that they'd never get any work done again under the weight of complaints if they did!

On a slightly more serious note, I expect all of this is being taken care of by people who will be concentrating solely on the Star Trek TNG/DS9/Voyager releases and who will want to do the project justice. The hype seems to be building nicely (that trailer for the boxes does make me want to rush out and buy them) but I would prefer it if they were once every three months rather than once every two!

But why are that not going to do the new series ST:E straight to DVD instead of Video when they start to release them for home use...

I got the info from www.amazon.co.uk - doesn't mention commentaries. I think that bit might be in the Season One highlights, just them talking about their favourite episodes rather than comentaries, perhaps? Would be disappointing, though if they're missing.

Obviously Paramount know all too well what a cash cow Star Trek is in all it's forms. They will release the videos, then a bit latter the Special Editions of the episodes on DVD so all ST fans will buy them twice. (This is coming from someone who has a cupboard full of all the TOS, DS9 and Voy episodes on VHS and is dreading the time when these series come on DVD and has to justify their purchase to the better half) :p
