Another season, another thread :)
Quick recap of the offseason, most of the AFC North got arrested, stabbed or faceplanted off their motorcycles. :brickwall
The preseason started last night with the Hall oF Fame game.
Oakland 16 - 10 Philadelphia.
Here's hoping there aren't too many injuries before the real action starts in a months time.
being completely lazy and not looking, does anyone know if Sky will broadcast games in HD?

I'm just hoping the Bengals have enough players who aren't in jail so we can field a team :D

It's quite an astounding roster of criminals they've assembled there. Bang cartoons (http://www.bangcartoon.com/cartoons/index.cfm/fa/viewcartoon/cartoon/2006Archive|bengals.swf) have done their usual :)

No far as I know - they ain't even broadcasting the Ashes in HD so the NFL will be SD/4:3 for a while yet :(
I'd love to see some US Sports in Widescreen though - not seen a single bit of action yet in the widescreen format whether it be MLB, NBA, NFL or NHL :( :(

Anyone know of any plans by Sky or Setanta to show any pre-season games?
NASN should have them but as yet are still to get their fingers out of their ***** and sort out a deal with NFL. Last year they had the Hall of fame game but this season they didn't. Its why i still haven't signed up yet, they are slacking big time.
Culpepper to possibly play on Saturday

NASN have got them, only they don't show them in the United Kingdom for some reason(check out it out on their website, by selecting ireland, or any other country).
Another reason I'm glad I cancelled.
I'm giving NASN till the start of the season before I cancel, I want to see what their NFL and NCAA (lack of) coverage is like, before I bin them.

Good luck with the cancelation !!!!! Just got a months refund only waiting for another 2 months now. Made the original phonecall in Feb to cancel, 6 months and around 6 phonecalls later it looks like their is light at the end of the tunnel. Absolute Morons Setanta
And I have the patience of a saint.
didn't realise Marcus Vick was with the Dolphins !!! and as a WR .

He's actually playing in special team drills now. Probably likely to be punt returning if he is to see any game time.

You're so right there, I'm starting to get the feeling that Sky HD is a waste of money. I was pretty confident that they would have the NFL in HD this season :(
And no preseason football on NASN either :(
Has anyone heard who will be showing the games that will be broadcast on the NFL Network later in the season?

At least it looks like its going to be in widescreen for those of you with Sky HD.
Hmmm don't think the broadcast on SS1HD will be in HD bearing in mind the programme isn't quite long enough although might be wrong. Even WS would be a shock, although we know that Sky get the HD feeds due to the occasional HD logos on the coverage last season.
Sky don't normally show NFL games that are on in the middle of the night do they? I like to get the occasional fix from 6pm-midnight on a Sunday... are they still doing that?

didn't realise Marcus Vick was with the Dolphins !!! and as a WR .
Although he didn't make the final cut of 53 on Saturday - notwithstanding returning kicks, catching a TD pass and taking a series of snaps in the Dolphins' win over the Rams in their final pre-season game. It was good of the Dolphins to give him a chance though after his troubles at college.
The Detroit Lions have now parted company with WR Charles Rodgers - their first round draft pick and second overall of 2003. And their first round draft pick and third overall pick of 2002 QB Joey Harrington is now warming the bench with the Miami Dolphins!
In good news for the Dolphins, Ben Roethlisberger has been ruled out of Thursday's season opener at home against the Dolphins as he has had an operation on his appendix. Charlie Batch is a very capable second string quarterback though as he showed last season when he subbed in for the injured Roethlisberger.

Well, referees have been known to have eyes in the back of their heads when you do something bad, so.... :)
Just finished watching it and can't help but feel shafted by that Miller TD :oh-hum:
Pros:
Brown is MUCH stronger.
Daunte didn't look frigthened to take a hit
The D line looked improved, and sharper
Wes Welker
That penalty that Miami gave away to give the Steelers a first down inside their 10 instead of forcing them to punt turned the game. They never recovered from that and once they fell behind again, it was an inevitable defeat. Dolphins impressed me on offence though but their defence was certainly lacking in the secondary. Thought the Steelers were very unimpressive at times but explosive when needed.

It's a bit early for that, we had a makeshift OL this week which meant that running the ball would be very difficult which puts us in a hole straight away. However, I may join you if there's another showing like that next week :brickwall

Honest NicolaUK (Mr NicolaUK if I remember rightly), he was appalling today. Constantly throwing passes in which his recievers were going to get hit the moment hey went near the ball, consistly throwing into double coverage.
OK, the Baltimore defense was really, really good today and they were playing with a patched up Offensive line, but I'm happy driving my Chris Simms Hatred bus.
I'll save you a seat, you know you want it.
(although, truth be told I'm not to excited about the prospect of a Tim Rattay bus. I was slightly excited about a Gurden developed Gradowski bus, but he looked a little less impressive today than he did against Miami's third string.....)

Yeah, Mr NicolaUK here, although she does enjoying seeing the Bucs play but a home game doesn't co-inside with our time in Florida this season :(
I think you've hit the nail on the head, our buddy Chris Simms may not be the second coming of Doug Williams (I'd settle for Steve DeBerg though) but who else do we have?? My mate who's a 49er fan said that he was so pleased that they got rid of Tim Rattay and thought it was hilarious that he turned up on our sideline

We seemed to pick up every dodgy quaterback available in the last few months, McCown, Fieldler, Rattay.
Fieldler could of been intresting, but he could hardly throw the ball when they released him.
They should of never got rid of Greise, everyone talks about how Simms led Tampa to the division title and the play-offs, yet they forget it was Greise who led them to a 5-1 start, so Simms only really went 6-5 last season(including a loss to a poor winless at that point 49ers team).
Although a Charlie Weis/Jon Gurden coached quaterback might be nice..............

From ProFootball Times this morning :|
SIMMS "WHIMPERING" ON CONTACT
A league source tells us that players on the Baltimore Ravens defense heard Tampa quarterback Chris Simms "whimpering" on contact during Sunday's 27-0 shellacking of the Bucs by the Ravens.
The source also summed up the game as follows: (1) "Steve McNair is better than Kyle Boller"; (2) "Ray Lewis is a beast"; and (3) "Chris Simms is a pussy." (We apologize to any cats who might be offended by that last statement.)
It's not a positive development for the Buccaneers, which allowed 2005 opening-day starter Brian Griese to walk away via free agency. If it turns out that Simms' performance last season after Griese went down with an injury was a fluke, the only options for replacing him are Tim Rattay and rookie Bruce Gradkowski.
Simms' performance also doesn't bode well for his long-term financial picture, given that he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2006 season.
Simms is the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Phil Simms. Last year, fellow HOF'er Steve Young suggested during ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown that Simms might not have the "mental toughness" to deal with the "information overload" of the NFL after being reared in a "laissez-faire" atmosphere. Phil Simms responded in part with this quote: "You can say whatever you want about my son. The one thing that will get me mad — and I'll stand in your face about it — is about toughness."
Two weeks ago, it was revealed that Chris Simms and Bucs assistant coach Kyle Shanahan have tattooed each other's initials on their legs.
Who doesn't think that Ray Lewis didn't shout something like this at Simms on Sunday? "Hey, Chrissy -- I'm gonna tattoo my initials on your other leg. With my teeth."
Not sure how much belief to put in this report, but I'm even more confident for the rest of the season now.....................
As much as us giants fans wish Phil Simms was inducted into the Hall, it unfortunately isn't the case.
They've corrected that bit on their website.
Watching my tivo recording, 1:56 left in the Redskins-Vikings game, cable box chooses this time to update itself, resetting itself and changing the channel afterwards
Anyway after six years of coming soon, I can now press the red button and stuff happens :)

Fans with access to Sky Sports’ digital coverage of NFL games will have a choice of live NFL games for the first time this Sunday when two additional matches are screened simultaneously via the red button.
Those with Sky digital can enjoy coverage of two crucial clashes; firstly the New York Giants at the Philadelphia Eagles and then the Kansas City Chiefs at the Denver Broncos.
The games are the first of two additional matches that will be made available each Sunday night of the regular season starting this weekend and can be viewed by pressing the red button at any point during the main live programme. The first kicks off soon after 6pm and the second at 9.15pm.
Did Sky mention this during the game last week? If they did I missed it.
Think i'll be watching the Giants @ Philli game today then.

I was just about to post this about the extra games.
I dont think Sky mentioned this last week. I think its a pretty big deal and they should have been pushing this harder. Maybe they have only just secured the rights so probably didnt want to say anything until it had been confirmed.

If you ever open up a bookmakers, please make sure I'm the first to know! :D Rams by 7-10 points.
Great news about the choice of viewing  One of the things that frustrates me about watching on SKy is not being able to switch games when their main one is a blowout.
49ers to win 24-21 with a Joe Nedney FG to win it in the final minute :D

Grrr... I wish I could get the giants game, but if I remember, the red button only works for sky subscribers and us poor cable folk will have to 'make do' with Miami (again).
Wow, looks like Culpepper has decided to skip three quarters of playing well and then self destructing (against the Steelers) to just start by playing ugly.
Buffalo doesn't look too bad this season, shame Losman appears to suck.

Can see him been traded to Tampa soon.

Does anyone subscribe to the NFL Game Pass that is advertised on NFL.com and Yahoo.com? You can watch any live game feed for $24.99 a week. The service seems to have worked in week 1, but completely failed during last nights games. There are now a bunch of angry UK NFL fans! I subscribed for week 2, and the system didn't work until 2am. A word of warning to any NFL fan thinking about paying the idiotic priced service.

Bit of a joke isn't it, skip the game between two playoff teams (Giants v Seahawks) and show the Rams v Cardinals instead.
Historical significance aside, I doubt it'll be a great game to watch, if it was the Cardinals at St. Louis then that might be interesting from a supporter point of view.

I think its more of a case that Sky are contract to show a % of all the teams every year, so get them out the way early before the games are meaningless, meaning when they get to the business end of the season they can show the important matches without needing to worry about who they've got left to show.

I thought it was only me that can't stand him and Cadle isn't much better. I'd prefer to have either the Fox or CBS studio coverage and now that there's the interactive option it would be simple to do.

Be interesting to see how Seattle do without Alexander. Morris is a decent runner, but nowhere near the class of him.

From NFL.com
When officially released by police, about half the document was blacked out, including the phrases "attempting suicide by prescription pain medication" and "a drug overdose," as well as the details of Owens having two pills pried from his mouth and Owens saying "Yes" when asked if he intended to harm himself.
Seems a bit pointless blanking everything out when the document (http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0927061owens1.html) has been on the net since yesterday.

On a lighter note
Fox Sports (http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6011048)
NFL owners will consider next month whether to play two games a year outside the United States, starting with contests in Canada, Mexico, Britain and Germany.
The league has played numerous exhibition games overseas for the past two decades. The New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks will play a preseason game next August in Beijing.
But last year's San Francisco-Arizona game in Mexico City is the only regular-season match played outside the United States. It drew over 100,000 fans to Azteca Stadium.
Mark Waller, senior vice president of NFL International, said Thursday the league believes fans in a number of countries are now ready for the real thing. NFL games regularly have been televised live in Mexico and Canada and more recently in Europe, notably the United Kingdom.
"The preseason games and American Bowl games have worked well to introduce fans to the game," Waller said. "Once fans have gotten to know it and understand it, they are very aware that the regular season, playoffs and Super Bowl are the real thing."
Waller already has spoken to the owners about the plan and received an enthusiastic response, with most of the questions about logistics rather than economics. Under the plan, which would probably be put in place for the 2007 season, there would be a rotation so that each team would lose only one home game every 16 years.
Coaches have tended to be less enthusiastic about going overseas, especially to Europe and Asia, primarily because of jet lag and travel time. Waller noted, however, that a trip to England or Germany isn't much different from a coast-to-coast trip.
League officials, who have been talking for years about regular-season overseas games, say that matches in Europe could be timed in a way that teams returning from them might go into a bye week. They are likely to be played in October, a period when the bye weeks always are in effect.
The plan, first reported by The Arizona Republic, will be discussed again during meetings in New Orleans on Oct. 24.
But on a darker note, it would appear that God doesn't love Sean Alexander enough. Well why else wouldn't he fix his broken foot in 3 days?
http://www.nfl.com/teams/story/SEA/9690140
KIRKLAND, Wash. (Sept. 27, 2006) -- On second look, Shaun Alexander's foot is indeed broken.
The league MVP and Seattle running back asked for and got another round of CT scans on the previously diagnosed cracked bone in his left foot.
Alexander said those tests showed the same crack in the fourth metatarsal that was there on Sept. 25. So despite feeling "great" following two days of praying and "a bone machine" feverishly working at Alexander's house, he says he is out indefinitely -- including for the Oct. 1 game at Chicago.
"Unless it's the Super Bowl, I don't think that Mike would even let me think about playing," Alexander said of coach Mike Holmgren.
But Alexander still was listed as doubtful on the injury report.
"A lot of swelling is gone, a lot of blood from the bone (is gone), but there is still a crack," the upbeat Alexander added shortly after getting affirmation from doctors Wednesday afternoon.

More T.O. fallout, regarding the blacked out parts
Authorities did not immediately respond, citing privacy laws, but on Thursday the president of the Dallas Police Association -- which represents Dallas police officers -- demanded an apology from T.O. and his publicist.
"The officers reacted because they were called to this location to do this job. Now they're being put under a microscope by some fancy little football person," Senior Cpl. Glenn White said. "Give me a break. Those officers are 10 times better than this man. ... We police officers don't go out to these calls and make stuff up."

He had a midweek repreive, but surely after another lost fumble in the red zone for Kurt Warner its time for Matt Leinart. To rub salt in the wound, the first play after the fumble was run for a 78 yard touchdown.
EDIT
Maybe not. Matt Leinart sacked on his first touch, and fumbled! The Arizona O-line sucks.

You're not wrong. The Edges stats today are horrible, averaging 2 yards per carry. At one point he had 3 yards from 8 attempts
Can't believe we've lost to Houston :(
mmmm Onside kick could decide this .
...Can't believe we've lost to Houston :(
I agonised over this pick for days, but then I thought to myself "There's no way that miami can lose to the texans, no matter how ugly they've looked so far", show's how much I know :)

I didn't even think twice about that one, I mean how could the phins lose that game? :brickwall
Worst for me was the Ravens game. I kept switching from the ravens to the chargers, and the ending to the game proved just how closely matched it was. :(
Bengals are getting a bit of a beating atm

Because I'm such a nice guy I'll let you off, just this once though (and only because you haven't beaten me this week) :)
No Fadeaway this week though, must be his bye week :(
Quick rule pointer, I'd prefer picks in, no later than, 15mins after the kickoff of the first match (of that weekend).
Special pointer for the Thursday, thanksgiving games, on that weekend just post your picks for those three games and then do the rest of the weeks in a separate post, else you end up editing your post if you change your mind on later games making it look a bit suspicious :nono:
Anyway, the jags v skins game was a great one to watch :)

Is there any news on whether Five have got the rights to the late Sunday game once the baseball has finished. Last I heard it was a bit 'Up in the air'.

Who else is bidding (if anyone)?
I think I may have got confused. Five are set to show the Sunday night game starting Week 8 if the baseballs finished, and week 9 if its not.
Its the NFL Network games which are still up for acquisition, with an announcement expected in the middle of September, but nothing seems to have materialised.
First game isn't until Thanksgiving, and it only covers 8 games anyway.

Harrington OUT.... NEXT !!! :(
(thats out as in not good enough)
Oh dear - things are looking desperate now for the Dolphins :( On the strength of last night it appears that Harrington is probably the best bet the Dolphins have at quarterback as Culpepper (from the little I've seen of him - he's normally been buried under the opposition defense when I've seen him) is a million miles from the quarterback he was two seasons ago when he was going head to head with Peyton Manning for NFL passing honours.
The Dolphins situation also illustrates what a bad idea it is to put in two new quarterbacks in the off-season. The lack of continuity at the key position is telling and I honestly do not think the Dolphins would have been in any worse shape this season if they had Gus Frerotte calling the signals instead.
6/1 if i remember correctly.
What a joke!
Good to see the bookies offering fair odds - in a 2 horse race (a draw is very unlikely), how can 1 be 1/33 and the other 6/1!
Utterly buried this week in the Fantasy Leagues and this was a good week for my 2 teams!

No i didnt do handicap bettiing, just who would win, hence the crazy prices on the Colts for example.
I find with that though you have to add quite alot of teams to get a decent price, on my 9 that i won with on Sunday that was only 8/1 so you have to stake a fair bit to get anykind of a earning. (I staked a £10) :D
This week was pretty easy choosing teams - so i dont do it everyweek. But depending on who you bet with you can see how much you potentially could win without placing your stake.
When it gets nearer Sunday, ill post by bet up here if you like? :)

This is a horrible week to call.
I keep changing my mind on the Giants, Carolina, Seattle, Cinci and KC games.
Only found out before that the 49ers are the alternate 2nd game tomorrow - first and probably only chance to see them in action this season. Shame they will probably get a total and utter 21-3 mauling from the Chargers (well, that is a total mauling for Schottenheimer and his Chargers :D)
