Hi folks,
Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for dvd's that really shine in the dd 5.1 or dts departments. I've recently got my home cinema setup and really enjoy watching films like Saving Private Ryan and The Phantom Menace for the effect of the sound. It really is amazing.
Others I've watched recently are:
Braveheart
Gladiator
T1/T2
Enemy at the gatesrate
Tomb Raider
If anyone has any other suggestions then I'd be glad to hear from them. Thinking of getting the Mummy/Mummy Returns box set but I'll see.
Thanks,
Mick
Glad you're enjoying your setup. If you've got a sub then Twister DTS will give it a very hefty workout :)
Moulin Rouge also has a powerful DTS track and I enjoyed Last of the Mohicans DTS too.
I'm sure there are lots more :)
I've got DTS Demo Discs 3 and 4 you can borrow if you want...... (14 posts... I should be able to trust you :D )
LMK if you wanna borrow em
They're nowt special but there's a couple of good music ones on
I'd never heard of "The Eagles" But I want their dvd now :)

Thanks for the suggestions - should be able to pick up twister cheap enough - have a sub I visited my folks over the christmas and they have a 25" Nicam tv and it really depressed me. Couldn't wait to get back to my widescreen
Any other suggestions welcomed.
Cheers,
Mick

Could I borrow the one with the Eagles on? Been wondering whether to get it for some time. It might convince me to get it.
They've both only got one on each but you're welcome to take em both if you want......Warrington's not too far to come looking for you if you don't send em back :D

Titan AE
Event Horizon
House On Haunted Hill (New Version)
Opening scene on Contact
Matrix - lobby scene
Heat - street gun battles
If these dvds are selected purely on sonic excellence I would add these to the list:
The Mummy UE / The Mummy Returns SE- unbelivably noisy
Bridget Jones Diary R1 - I know, not an action film but the music and dialogue is a brilliant example of how to do a dialogue/music based film in 5.1.
U-571 R2- another that's noisy when it needs to be (*historical innacuracies notwithstanding!)
Toy Story 2 - for what is branded a 'kids' film this movie arguably still has the best put together surround track out there - for a film majoring in visuals Pixar didn't d scrimp on the soundtrack
(These are all DD5.1)
You've already mentioned my other fav, Gladiator - which not only has brilliant sound but an awesome score.
Incidentally, I was watching Manhattan last night and, even although it only has a mono sound, both the Gershwin soundtrack and the dialogue still sounded brilliant. Even these older mono soundtracks are still reproduced extremely well in a decent home cinema set-up and can, dependent on the film, be more enjoyable than some of the attempts at re-engineering a 5.1 mix from an old mono track.

Agreed. I thought SPR DTS was extremely good, but this one has the edge imo. :)

Mummy Returns (DTS) - was fantastic. Pity about the film.
Gladiator (DTS) - is a given.
Speed (DD5.1) - Not the 'loudest' but the use of the 5.1 is (IMHO) one of best I've heard.
Jurassic Park (DD5.1) - Just play it LOUD.

U2 Elevation 2001 is the best music DVD I have seen and heard. Also I've just got Roger Waters - In The Flesh and it sounds excellant too. Can't wait to see Roger at Wembley in June.
I've got to go for "Eagles - HFO" DTS as well. Sounds fantastic!!
