Simple question really, after seeing Carrick bought for £15m, Andy Johnson at £8.6 and Curis Davies, a player with only 1 seasons experience where he got relegated, valued at £10m the prices of English players are getting stupid (not mention Chelsea blowing £24m on Wright-Phillips, £12m on Johnson etc)

Don't forget Walcott, even Pennant at £6.2m!

Yeah, think it is due to the lack of decent quality English players, compared to the amont of players available from abroad. One thing that is also noticeable is the lack of Scottish players in the Premiership nowadays

and you are suprised after seeing Uniteds last import from north of the border, Liam Miller.

one reason UK players cost more, is because managers know what they are getting. UK players are used to the language (well maybe not geordies), and the league/style of play required.

Yes English players are over priced as seen average players and some less than average players are going for stupid money. This will continue I guess as long as clubs will pay these inflated prices.

a players true transfer value can only ever be seen in retrospect

if heskey scores the goals which keep Wigan in the premiership, or even get them into europe, then his value will be worthwhile.

I remember people saying united overpaid for Dwight Yorke, and Teddy Sheringham at the time of their respective signings.

whatever they cost, that 98/99 season was priceless

I think the reason Man Utd pay over the odds for English players, is that they are proven in the Premiership - Carrick, Rio & Rooney etc. Ever since the Veron transfer, Fergi's probably been a little edgy paying a large sum of money abroad for unproven Premiership players.

I'd also say Spanish players are over priced too, especially with the quotes floating around for Torres.

Shevchenko is probably the most overpriced player ever if you think about his age.

English players are generally overpriced but there are some bargains to be had. Tottenham bought Robinson, Carrick, Dawson, Lennon & Huddlestone for approx £11m. And then sold Carrick for £14m+.

Fire sale though. Otherwise they'd have been double that to buy

If you buy a good player from abroad theres a 50/50 chance they just wont settle, be it the football or the lifestyle. Thats the risk you dont take with a British player.

English players (and players that play in the EPL) are over-priced. Must be all that hyping up and money from Sky.

The vast majority of transfers of English players are from English clubs, most of whom are reasonably wealthy compared to foreign clubs. You have to look at how much English clubs can afford to pay to retain their best players and how much it would cost for replacements. A large proportion of the fee is simply the inducement to a club to make it worth parting with their prize asset. Most clubs do not have to sell their best players to balance the books, so the money has to compensate for the loss of a key player and be sufficient for the manager to feel that he can be sure he will improve the squad with the proceeds.

Mind you, no matter what argument you put forward, I still cannot understand what posessed Wigan to pay £3m for Fitz Hall!

Carrick, 18.6million. :lol::lol:

I dont think its just english players that are overpriced, although they are severely. 8m or so for pennant and 15+ for carrick are silly prices, but at least you know what type of player you are buying. You just have to look at the vast steaming piles of horrific players coming into the country from random places around the world to see the risks of buying foreign players. Picking 2 random clubs, Portsmouth and Villa for example. Have the players they brought in really made a dramatic impact and made them better than what they would have been picking up some decent prospects from the championship or using some youth players?

Quite true, but then you could argue would someone homegrown or cheaper have bagged as many goals anyway :shrug:
On the face of it all footballers are really overpriced/overrated/overpaid, but then the amount of prize money, TV revenue, shirt sales and so on makes them seem a more reasonable investment. When you compare the cost of a footballer to the price of a new hospital wing, school etc... :oh-hum:

Carrick, 18.6million. :lol::lol:

That is just an unbelievable amount of money. Even if a bit of it is made up of appearances etc, I just can't get my head around that.

Are the Glazer out mob moaning about him not making transfer funds available?

Is it any sillier than 30 million for Rio, 30 million for shevchenko, 11 million for heskey, 10million + for diouf (sp)

as for transfer funds, hmmm, well we've spend about what we got in compensation for the chelsea 'affair', and RVN, so currently net spend is about 0

another way to look at the carrick thing is , 10 millilon cheaper than Veron.

let's just hope he performs a bit better

30million for Sheva is possibly worth it, he's bound to score at least 20 goals and set up a hatful too.

Better then Carrick for 18.6 anyways.
