After looking on all the main dvd review sites and reading people's best DVDs of the year polls there's one title which seems to keep popping up.
Possibly the only DVD to consistently get voted highly by the Times, Debate, & Reviewer website reviewers is "In the Mood for Love".
Its somewhat ironic that the DVD which is most highly praised comes from a company which is regarded as one of the worst distributers ever on the DVD market.

According to my local paper the video/DVD of the year is the latest Bob the Builder one. Followed by titles such as Crouching Tiger, Traffic and Shrek.

Is it the dvd or the film that's rated? That's what always bugs me.
does a good film get the gong or a mediocre film with 'good'extras?

Personally I'd say you'd be hard pressed to better the Kubrick boxset with the Godfather coming second.

In the case of "In the mood for love", both the film and the extras get rated highly.

True, but they essentially did no work for it by licensing the French release. The same can be said for their Bergman releases.
However, this all goes to show that you cannot say that a disc from a particular distributor will be good or bad. You must wait for reviews before making decisions.

like what sidebog7 said, all the work was done by TF1, the French distributor who released this disc ahead of Tartan, who later licensed and repacked the discs.

I've not checked the other sites, but i'm quite sure every reviewer on DVDTimes who chose ITMFL chose it based on the french release.

Even the Criterion release seems to be licensed from this French release. Though at least they seem dedicated enough to put the effort into adding extra (exclusive) features.

I think the two should be rated separately i.e. the DVD and the film. The top film could easily be a bare bones release and I think most would agree that SW:TPM was not a great film but a cracking DVD. You also get region problems. My vote for top DVD would be Moulin Rouge R4 but the R2 won't be released until March 2002 :brickwall . . . and it may even have a rental window :brickwall

The genuine highlights of the year appear to have been looked over by most people. For me, the Alfred Hitchcock and Stanley Kubrick boxsets were the highlight of the year. They may not be bursting with extras, but I would take them over the likes of Moulin Rouge any day (although that is an outstanding package as well).

I also think that the Criterion releases of The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeouisie, L'Avventura and Spartacus were very special indeed.

Tristan H raises another interesting issue - should box sets be a separate category?

Yep, they even scrapped their own original release because it was rubbish, although thats never stopped 'em from releasing a disc before.
Even though it was a direct port of the Frence release, it still has to count as a Tartan title and one that doesnt reflect Tartan's overall quality.

The best DVD I got this year was the Godfather Trilogy. Great films and an extras package to match.

Superman SE R4

- great extra footage, great picture, great sound, great extras

Godfather trilog. is in the post, that may beat it

As much as I generally dislike Disney, I must say that the DVD release of Snow White would have to rate as one of the best DVDs for the year 2001. The extras dealing with the art of animation as riveting. Moulin Rouge would run a close second

For kids vids, the Region 1 Thomas the Tank Engine (not the Magic Railroad) would rate as a a standout. Beyond the handful of Thomas stories, it also has plenty of fun extras to keep the kids amused - from painting the engines to karaoke versions of the songs... now if only the could have kept the original Ringo Starr naration instead of using George Carlin (I think it is).

regards, Tim...

I have to vote for the Three Colours Trilogy. The movies are excellent and the extra's just so appropriate for each.

Honorable mention to Fox for getting three seasons of Buffy and one season of Angel out in one year (sure the packaging had problems and the picture wasn't all we hoped but we all still bought it and watched it, didn't we:D )

I'm firmly in the In the Mood for Love camp - though credit where it's due, the DVD's producer Gilles Ciment is the man we should thank for the DVD, not TF1!

TF1 did exactly the same as Tartan - they bought the French distribution rights, but that's all they did. They get all the praise because their version was first on the market and because it's packaged in a nicer box than the Tartan one (and because their track record as a distributor is rather better than Tartan's), but the actual disc content is the responsibility of M.Ciment's own company, whose name escapes me.

The Godfather Collection was the best release.
Moulin Rouge, The Phantom Menace and Snow White also excellent. Glad to get my hands on The Wickerman from Anchor Bay even though the R2 now will be a bit better. :(

I thought this was the same in all regions. What's the R4 disc got that the R1 and R2 hasn't?

If we are talking purely picture quality and sound then my vote would go for Apocalypse Now Redux - the 5.1 mix is absolutely superb, and the picture quality defies the original films age - it puts many "modern" releases to shame.

It is a pity about the lack of any extras though.:(

The companys name is Ocean Films (http://www.ocean-films.com/) and you are correct, they should receive the praise for this fantastic set.

Moulin Rouge, Godfather, Raging Bull SE and the Simpsons Season 1 are the best DVD's, as 'items' I have had this year. All really well done. I was especially surprised at the Simpsons considering it would have sold whatever, the detail is very impressive.
