View Full Version : August Photo Event

I've enjoyed the challenge of the PAD thread this year, and August will soon dawn as a gaping chasm familiar to those who have met women in Portsmouth.
So, any thoughts as to what we could do - not a daily thing as I think we may have a problem with mass suicide. Perhaps a weekly themed non-comp thread?
What say you gaylords?

How about a camera phone competition? All pictures have to be taken on a camera phone (or a PDA or a similar item where camera is not the prime function)

Now that could be a plan.

How about something either shot on film or with no post-processing, JPEG only?
More creativity on the camera, and less on the PC would be cool I think.

Having a look at the images shot in the PAD while you were away there's not been a lack of creativity.
We've seen minimal PP and I spent the first 15 days or so using a Ricoh fixed lens compact with no PP at all. There's also been a good mix of film and digital and that comp has really turned out to be about creativity and thought rather than technical prowess (although that's been excellent as well).
And anyway, JPG when the camera can shoot RAW is surely by definition post-processed, just by the camera ;)
I was thinking of a treasure hunt idea, with a list of items/styles of photo (fruit, landscapes, black and white, wildlife, etc) with more points for the harder ones

or how about something bizzare like a fixed focal length for each shot, like one load must be done at 50mm and another load at 275mm or something

I like ajoh198's idea. Say 12 subjects ranging from something everyday, to something not so common. All to be taken in the 31 days, in no specific order. Or something along those lines.
How about a morning, noon and night picture for every day, one a day just isn't enough!

:cuckoo:
I don't know how many things would be best if you went for the treasure hunt, I don't mind a long list of things of which I've no intention of doing all of them as some of them are really challenging.
That said a shorter list would encourage me to try and do all of them and is probably more popular after taking a photo a day. Or maybe just each person entering picks one favorite style/subject..
I like the lens idea, but I've only the kit lens for my 350d and people using compacts would be excluded - perhaps saying a zoomed in photo, or one with a short depth of field would be fgeneral enough for people to do?
The reason I thought of the idea was because when doing the pad I was forced to take photos I wouldn't have otherwise. So by having a specific set of shots to take (or styles to take in) it would force me to do something new. That for me was the best thing about the PaD

No, the best thing about the PaD hasn't happen yet.
August the sodding 1st
:D
Another vote for the Treasure hunt idea, like Highlander said maybe 12, or even 15 items with a points value for difficulty, then add up your points at the end of the month.

I might be up for the Treasure Hunt thingy - I'm not really into forum compos stuff as a rule, but this one could be fun!

Or we each have a number and go in order, then first person takes a photo. The second will take the next, but it has to link somehow to the first (such as by composition / colour). A sort of Chinese whispers.

What do we win? (not that I will)
How about a UPOTW* compo? And a TPOTM** compo? And a GPAUFL*** thread?
*Unthemed Picture Of The Week
**Themed Picture Of The Month
***General, Post Anything You Feel Like Thread
;)
Treasure hunt seems the most practical so far.
I'd also favour a themed picture a week type thread, although instead of the very broad ones like the photo comps, more of a stylistic directive.
For example, you could have a Portrait week, a B&W week, a snapshot week, an action week, an animal week, flower week, sports week.
That;s the first seven weeks set up right there.
Plus what could be interesting si to do a Programme set of weeks, i.e. a shutter priority week, a night-shot week etc etc.
[Edit -- how slooow are the forums tonight]
What do we win? (not that I will)
I'll see if I can dig out one of my two books by legendary photographer, Simon* Marsden. How's that?

Looks like they will be running one from the 1st August, I started one for the juLY 03 one but never finished :(

I organized one of these once with a photography society I used to run.
We each had a disposable camera, and a time limit, we shot the images, got them processsed in 20mins from Max Spielmen and chose winners based on various merits, whoever got the best overall score won a bag of different camera films.
It produced some very nice images, even though they were on disposable.
Thinking about this I'd also like to see a more well-rounded competition.
I'd like to pull together 4 or 5 judges to act as a panel to award placings, not for every August event but maybe have one week judged by a panel.
I'd quite happily judge if anyone is with me?

pics off a camera phone sounds good
as i know how awefull they are
even with a n80
I have a lot of work on at the moment (photography and mortgage paying) so am unlikely to be able to enter much. However, like with the PaD thread I'll be looking at all your stuff, so if you want a neutral judge then I'm happy to volunteer :)

how about and A-Z? Max two pics per day so you could do it in 13 days if you were super motivated or do the 26 pics over the 31 days of august?

Have you guys ever held a nude photography competition? It's an oft overlooked area of mainstream photography IMHO.

I do not think that we would get very far cavorting around the streets naked besides would people not point and laugh at us :D
edit: beaten to it again
Picture a day on a roll of a film in either a disposable or dirt cheap camera. End of the month everybody gets them developed and compare what was got (Or who didn't load the film right)
Kinda not instant enough, but would be interesting to see how people fair without the usual toys... or a light meter... Perhaps more suited to a 7 day challenge?
Would agree on the camera phone quality comment, 640x480 with awful washed colours is about the best mine can manage, up until a few months ago I were still using a 6310i

We all know that isn't true, your only objection is that it isn't us both. At the same time. In your bed.
I'm going to go and win the Photo Comp now so I can chose the next "Topic" :D

I like the tresure hunt (well I would!) with 26 things alphabetically i we can think of enough things...
Whilst "the forums" collectively will more then likely endulge in one of these genius ideas... there's nothing to stop any one of us individually tackling any of the other genius ideas ;)

I don't think I'll be individually tackleing the nude challenge...
I might try to at least do 'bird of the week' - that is of course if i keep up the club photography!

Doing a bird a week is certainly worth a try.
Doing a bird a week is certainly worth a try.
and you could combine it with some photography...
Sorry to bring this up as everyone was feeling so relieved after finishing the PAD but is there a general consensus on whether to go ahead with an August competition or not?!
Reckon we should go with the A - Z 26 item treasure hunt
do we pick any A, B, C etc or is someone going to come up with a list?
my thoughts are... you can blag anything for example if i took a photo of a sexy young lady i could be like;
A-wesome
B-eautiful
C-laire
... you get the idea?
Well up for another challenge in august!
L
I think your own ideas would be much more creative and also easier to complete throughout the month!
I'm a fan of the idea of each one being set like:
b - blurred
d - depth o field
l - landscape
m - monochrome
w - water
x - xylophone
or something like that, we should be able to come up with a list
Oh God, another photo challenge?!
Considering today is the 1st of August, shouldn't we decide on something soon?
Boink... see http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=437765 :p
ajoh198... hmm would need a very quick agreement from all if we were to take that approach... (which i don't think is very likely). My main concern being if we pre-pick the list the images will be forced and probably less people will be able to take part (often you see something out the window or on the way home from work etc and think wow i like that... let's shoot it!)
You/anyone could always come up with a list and if anyone would like to attempt it they can do so? :)
