View Full Version : Shrek
I know it's been a while since its release, both theatrically and on dvd, but am I the only who hates this movie? Am I the only one writhing in agony over Mike Myers' accent? Am I the only one who finds the Disney parodies lame and unfunny?
Opinions, people!! ;)

I love it! Just light-hearted, brilliant fun.... Eddie's best performance in years... :) And in fairness, Myers wasn't supposed to be funny, the comic relief was left upto donkey.... and I did find the Disney parodies funny... the whole thing was good... one of the top 5 films of the year meethinks :)
You're Scottish aincha...go on admit it!
If you forget it's him then it's ok...
Those of us who have young kids don't get a film we can watch as a family often so don't begrudge us...

i thought Eddie Murphy was better/funnier as the voice of that little dragon thing (Mushu?) in Disney's Mulan.. didn't really think Shrek was all that (lol) funny when i went to see it at the cinema and i still don't after watching it 3/4 times on DVD - but it's still a great, fun film
Having grown up on Disney films I thought it was great and the Disney parodies really made me laugh...
Mind you that may have been the vodka
I think Mike Myers did a good job in voicing Shrek. It would have been all too easy to give us another North American voice in the cast along with Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy and John Lithgow. He did something different, and it fitted the character perfectly. Shrek might not appear to have the longevity of say Snow White or Dumbo, but I bet it'll be regarded as a classic in 50 years time just like all the other Disney animated features of yesteryear.

It was summed up in our household this Christmas. Had four neices round, aged 11, 7, 4 and 2.
Did not move while Shrek was on, then put on the Grinch, bored after ten minutes, started running around etc ......
Vote from Kids and Adults alike:
Shrek  Grinch :(

Its throwaway fun - and I didn't mind Myers' accent either - as someone else has said, it makes a nice change.
I think people to tend to overrate this film slightly - I mean its extremely plot-lite - but it has enough decent dialogue to keep it interesting.
Had so many other peoples kids through my door this festive period that I seriously considered moving and not telling anyone, however Shrek did save the day on more than one occasion and managed to keep the racket down to bearable levels.....just.
That'll do Donkey, that'll do.
cheers

When I first saw it I didn't like the accent Mike Myres used for Shrek and it kind of spoilt the film for me (but only a little bit) but now after watching the film several times I have become used to it.
Saw it once at the cinema and loved it. Bought the R1 DVD and still can't be bothered to watch it. Funny, eh?
Boink!
Fantastic family film, can't wait for Monters Inc.

Hi there,
i watched it with the intention to slate it, found it to be a great film, humorous and the ****-takes added to an adult/kid comedy, which works on a few levels.
great film, will see again

Having heard lots opf rave reviews I thought it was just very average - much preferred the Toy Stories meself .
I must admit, although I did enjoy it, I don't think it's quite as good as most people say, and I agree that Toy Story 1&2 are superior (although maybe an unfair comparison!).
It is mostly funny, very impressive technically, but I'm not sure how many more times I could watch it.

*Spoilers*
I thought the first 30 minutes were very good. The jokes were funny and they were arriving thick and fast, but as the film goes on it loses pace; the songs are annoying especially the ballad playing when the Princess is trying on the wedding dress, the jokes aren't funny or are totally non-existant, there's a little too much sentimentality and the ending is too obvious.
Surely, if they wanted to really make a dig at Disney they would....
*Spoiler alert*
...have had Shrek become human, and make the message - it DOES matter what YOU look like, as opposed to the opposite! :)
fantastic, best, funny cartoon adventure.

Great film, and I thought the digs at Disney were on target and much deserved.
it's quite average imho. the jive talking donkey is just plain irritating (i was expecting him to start talking about ho's, ak's and gats) and myers voice is simply too light and frail for the shrek character.

I despised Shrek, but then I despise most of what Dreamworks produces. I found the majority of the voices, not just Mike Myers, with his quasi-Scottish quasi-Welsh accent, annoying in the extreme. In an animated film, when the predominant feature is the voices, you know there's something wrong. I'm sick of those smart and savvy characters that act towards the audience instead of being self-contained. It's hard to put into words, but I think you'll know what I mean.
Of course it doesn't help that the film has an extremely ugly look to it. The color tones suck, most of the characters are ugly in an unintentional way, and the animation isn't exactly stellar either -- the characters seem to float about without any sense of weight.
I've never quite understood why the Oscar for best animated feature went to Shrek instead of Monsters Inc. True, the contenders weren't exactly hot (those two and Jimmy Neutron, what was that about?), but in my opinion Monsters Inc. was head and shoulders above the other two in every possible way.
I loved Shrek but hated Monster Inc. It was just ARGG! Real Monsters done with CGI.
I really enjoyed Shrek, it's in my list of 'must buy' DVDs now :)
Even though I think Mike Myers makes Shrek sound like Fat B@st@rd from AP (sometimes good, sometimes a bad thing) it's still a top film and imo hard to find fault with.
I really liked SHREK as well. Bought the R1 for the DTS and extras. Great film and a great DVD package.

Definitely my favourite of all the computer animated films so far, just ahead of Toy Story 2 on my current reckoning
