View Full Version : Performance of MyMemory's own brand CF cards
I'm getting a relatively high-end camera soon and have a quick question about memory cards.
Looking at MyMemory's Own Brand (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://scripts.affiliatefuture.com/AFClick.asp?affiliateID=17278&merchantID=884&programmeID=2718&mediaID=0&tracking=&url=http://www.mymemory.co.uk/memory/MyMemory/1GB/133X/PRO/Compact/Flash/Card) it seems you can get a 4 GB claimed 133X CF card for around 65 quid. However a SanDisk Extreme III (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://scripts.affiliatefuture.com/AFClick.asp?affiliateID=17278&merchantID=884&programmeID=2718&mediaID=0&tracking=&url=http://www.mymemory.co.uk/memory/SanDisk/1GB/Extreme/III/Compact/Flash/Card) of what appears to be the same spec costs over 140.
Having looked at some tests of the Extreme III you get around a 7.5 MB/s write speed (not quite the 20 MB/s they claim :p) on the actual camera. I can't find any similar tests for the 'own brand' card though. Does anyone have any experience with MyMemory's own brand? I was also tempted because it comes with a lifetime guarantee.

you don't state which camera you are using - but have you considered that the Extreme III card might be too fast for your needs? For example, I was reading that with a 350d, the maximum speed of the camera means there's no poiunt buying anything faster than Ultra II. No point spending the extra money in that situation.
Of course if you use a card reader to transfer the pics to your computer you might want the faster card

Fair point, well made  although it wouldn't make me spend the kind of money the OP is looking at. The 24.99 2gb 52x CF card from 7DS will do me fine when it arrives. If I'm transferring a lot of stuff through card reader (always use one) I'll just go make a cup of coffee or pick my nose a bit longer :gag:
I found a USB2 card reader made a significant difference with downloading to the PC.

Agree entirely, apart from the picking nose bit ;)
Mate of mine had a problem with a My Memory own brand 4GB CF card... wouldn't format in his 1D2... he had to get 2 x 2Gb ones off them instead.
This will be used in an EOS 5D. It was in that model that the statistic was for.

Basically I really don't want to spend 140 quid and then find out the mymemory card is 99% as fast.
DamienB, has your mate used any named brand cards in that camera? If so have they been quicker or around the same?
I really doubt it makes any difference in the camera; as mentioned before the advertised speeds and actual speeds in camera bear no relation. Just buy cheap, if it goes wrong, exchange...

If it goes wrong exchange is all well and good unless it goes wrong with 2GB of once in a lifetime images
That's true of any brand card though.
If you can afford a 5D surely you can afford to spend £140 on a card
Anywho, personally I wouldn't touch these non-brand cards with a bargepoll, especially a larger sized one. As Emeyedeejay said, if you lose your pics and its a 2gb card... ouch.
At least with companies like SanDisk if their cards break you always get a better model in replacement.
Have you looked to see how much a similar Lexar costs? I've never had any trouble with Lexar cards personally, and I've owned several.
And here I have several no-name cards which have never given me a problem... but I've only put hundreds of thousands of pics through them so what do I know :)

yeah, why scrimp on that? Like buying a £10k hifi and using string as speaker cables.
Yeah, fair point. I just figured that if what I was buying was essentially the same then saving 80 quid is saving 80 quid.
This might help if you want to know about the difference between the brands:
