New series in which Nigel Marven uses CGI graphics to travel through time in a bid to rescue extinct species and bring them to life in the 21st century. In the first episode, the adventurer turns the clock back 65 million years to save the tyrannosaurus rex from a giant meteor - but since the enormous creatures can cover 10 feet in just one stride, the task proves difficult. David Jason narrates.

what does everyone think of this? starts this sat i see adverts everyday for it.

Looks abit of a re-hash of walking with Dino's, but I think my son will enjoy it.

Is this meant to wet our appetites for Primaeval (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6580735#post6580735) ?

I hope it isn't spoiled too much by the poor picture quality of ITV1 on Sky Digital. A programme like this really needs a decent resolution to be enjoyed fully.

How do ITV think up such original programming?

just what TV needs

I'm sure there are loads of people out there who don't know what a CGI T Rex looks like

My first thought, was how do cgi graphics help you travel in time...?

Now there's no Doctor Who, me and the boy will no doubt tune in.

Yes.

These site's seam to say otherwise:
Primaeval (http://www.douglashenshall.com/Primaeval.html)

'Prehistoric Park' (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds34560.html)

Both seam to have different casts & set ups with Prehistoric Park billed as a docu/drams & Primaeval as pure sci-fi

Unless they have done some serious re-editing in the last few weeks it looks like you might have your wires crossed & both are different.

No you're right, it is a different series. Primaeval is still likely to be renamed into something else though when it's broadcast apparently.

in other words... prehistoric park is just a sad rip of Jurassic Park...

i really hate Nigel Marven so it's definitely one to miss even if it weren't on ITV.
Don't like the drama-mentry style used for these things either.

It'll be like Jurassic Park, but without the music.

22-07-2006, 00:57
It'll be more like Walking With Dinosaurs (seeing as it's the same team that did that) than Jurassic Park. I think it looks interesting as the t-rex apart the other creatures they're dealing with rarely get shown - T-Rex, Wooley Mammoth, Sabre-Tooth Tiger, Deinosuchus (big crocodile), Microraptor (bird-like dinosaur that glides), Arthropleura and Meganeura (big millipede and dragonfly).

IMO ITV should be appluaded for trying something different in a prime slot rather than the usual dross.

Hopefully better than JP. The first movie was pap and barely had 5 minutes of Dino footage.

22-07-2006, 18:26
yeah it doesn't work at all - the whole "documentary" thing makes it look really stupid instead of adding a bit of gravitas. It would have worked much better as a straight drama.

The playstation 2 dinosaurs don't help much either.

I did wonder what all the rush was about, but I missed the 1st 10 mins so thought perhaps there was a reason for this.

Does annoy me (in many animal progs) when (like the Tyrannosaurus (sp) when he 1st met them. All 3 of them just stood there and roared a lot. inches away from him, until he ran away at about 1/10th of their speed.

I'm sure in the wild it would be, snap, gulp, you're gone mate.

Also the bit about being swept away in the river, hardly seemed a MASSIVE water flow for a 6 ton animal to stand up in ok.

Graphics did look a bit "soft" at times (best way I can describe it)

Ok, for a bit of light entertainment though I guess.

I caught ten minutes of this when ITV1 repeated it for no readily apparent reason 24 hours later on Sunday.

The effects were pretty dire, the whole scenario laughable (not to mention unashamedly lifted from Jurrassic Park etc) and the 'acting' so bad that I resorted to watching the golf instead.

Let's not beat about the bush, did anyone really think this would be any good? I s'pose the only real surprise was just how nauseatingly bad it was...just shockingly poor tea-time viewing! I did say to my GF at the time that it might be okay if I were 7 years old, however, I think I better drop this down to 4.

...I particularly 'liked' the bit where he outran 3 T'Rex's

...and what is this tosh about a T-Rex won't be able to locate you if you stand completely still as their sight is based on movement, whilst at the same time having incredibly acute sense of smell... ...no matter how still I stood, If I were a couple of feet from one of these, they'd certainly be able to smell me and so quite easily gobble me up...though maybe the smell might put them off!!! ;)

Saw some of this, couldn't understand why they didn't go down the drama route (as was mentioned above.) They'd have a whole range of things that they could have done that didn't make them look like they were ripping off BBC's Walking With Dinosaurs (vasty superior) and throwing in a little Jurassic Park and The Sound of Thunder (at least that film had Ben Kingsley in a wig) in for good measure. Silly, silly stuff.

I'd say the idea of starting it like a behind the scenes documentary and it all going wrong and ending up in a drama style thing would have been much more interesting, instead of re-treading other shows.

I seem to remember reading that ITV spend ~ £1 million per episode on this, originally intended to compete with Doctor Who, I'd rather watch 'Fear Her' 5 more times than see this again. :)

So.....

Any more views on this weeks episode?

We want to bring back a mammoth.
So rather than travel back to when there are 1000's to pick from so we can have 2 nice healthy specimins which can hopefully breed, we'll instead travel to the time when there are virtually no mammoths left on the planet, and bring back just 1 injured female.

Yup, Sounds like a plan

Yeah, I wondered about this!

Unless I missed something it would be good it they gave a reason for why they do it just before they go extinct, like plucking one them from when they are thriving could 'mess up the time line' or something? OK, I know that argument would hold true even for taking the last mammoth but even an attempted explanation would be nice.

Likewise, as they have a time machine wouldn't you expect them to go back and observe the animals before catching one so they at least know how to look after them - me suspects the weekly theme is going to be - catch animal, animal unwell\unsettled, try and figure out whats wrong, also chuck in to the mix catch something at the same time they didn't plan to!!!

Also, I agree with the previous comments about it being better if it was a drama! Personally I wouldn't bother with it but my 5 year old is already hooked!

not a bad effort this programme.

However, they do make a great number of assumptions over dinosaur behaviour. I would prefer a bit more explanation to back up these assumptions, ie behaviour cannot be drawn so easily from just the fossil record.

That's just like Time Team and their digging up roman remains.

Ohhh, look we've found a couple of squares of roman mosaic, and 5 bricks.

From this our computer experts have been able to reconstruct the entire roman cathedral and surrounding village which we can now fly around in 3D

I hated this at first, but do you know as we're getting story arcs with the pixels, sorry dinosaurs, it's kind of growing on me. I still have the urge to shout "It's a puppet"!, but it's not bad for a filler programme, albeit in a fantasy, could never happen, WWE type way.

The sabre-tooth tigers were really, really crap cgi!

...I really hate this programme, it's so bloody demeaning to dinos and patronising to us...can't believe it's aimed at anyone over 5 years old!!

...however, I still find myself watching it...probably because it's saturday evening and there's bugger all else on
