The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is about a subway train in New York that's hijacked by bunch of gangsters led by Robert Shaw.

Walter Matthau plays Lt. Garber in charge of policing the subway and is soon in negotiations with Mr. Blue (Shaw). From the start Lt. Garber is a rather cynical person when giving a tour to a group of Japanese subway train managers and soon things turn serious! Matthau is on excellent form as Lt. Garber negotiating with Mr. Blue on the train. The gangsters demand $1,000,000 to be delivered in one hour or they will start killing the hostages one minute at a time.

The tension is high and the characters are gripping in this film with various banter between cops and gangsters. Overall an excellent film considering that there is very little location work and it's mainly shot in only three rooms! I watched it on RTE the other night after I came home from Lord of the Rings, I'd seen it before about 3 or 4 years ago. I think this film is definitely worth considering a purchase on DVD!

Interestingly there's no sign of the Twin Towers under construction since they started to build them in 1966 and the film was made in 1974!

A couple of trivia points: a) Joseph Sargent directed this film who also directed an episode of the original Star Trek series. b) It's obvious where Tarantino got his idea from giving colours as names for the gangsters in Reservoir Dogs!

YEEEEESSSSSSSSS !!!!

Superb film, & vastly under-rated IMHO.
