It seems to be in store only (no details on the website), but JJB Sports have an offer on their mountain bikes. Buy a mens 'Warrior' mountain bike for £99.99 and get a ladies 'Vouge' mountain bike free.
Both have front suspension, mens is a 20" frame, womens is 17".
Granted, they're not the best bikes in the world but still a bargain!

Cheers longfellow. Very tempting, as need some bikes but don't want to spend a great deal on some that are likely to spend most of their life in the garage! Anyone got either of these or know whether they're worth a punt?
Most of the people buying stuff like this would be much better off long-term just hiring bikes on the couple of days a year they feel like using them.
The bikes themselves are the cheap catalogue crap also sold by the likes of Sterling House. The frames are solid enough (as they're made of steel so thick you could use it for scaffolding), everything else will quickly fall apart if given any use.

urg the brakes on those things look a mess, your gonna end up with melted cheepo pads on the rims in this weather, crappy cables and brake arms that don't return properly due to weak springs.. spend a extra £100 at a decent bike shop and get a entry level bike with good branded components..
Ear ear...
I got my kids a couple bikes from sterling house. Only lasted 6- 8 weeks B4 they were completely unusable. Sterling dint wana know.

Buy a cheap bike like this and it probably will spend the whole time in the garage!

I'm suitably convinced that none of my ill-gotten gains should go up to Wigan, ta

Buy a bike by a known brand from a local bike shop. Spending £250 will get you a great entry level machine that will be nice to ride and have components that will last more than a few rides. If you find that cycling is just not for you then you will have a bike that you can sell for a reasonable amount of cash. Buying a bike for £99 and getting another one for free is just asking for trouble and grief.
The thread title needs changing, these are NOT mountain bikes. Though they may just qualify as bicycles.

Well that's the last time I post a bargain!!!! Thanks to all for the opinions.
I guess you could probably say the same about a lot of the 'bargains' on here though, cheap TFT monitors with slow response times, cheap DVDs of films nobody wanted to watch in the first place. It's cheap because they couldn't sell it at full price!
It just happens that people have stronger opinions about bikes than monitors! ;)

I never bought a bike with dead pixels and I never bought a monitor where the brakes failed and delivered me to the local hospital A&E ward. :)

i suppose £99 for two bikes isn't too bad - they'll probably be ok for trips around the park, etc..
my previous bike was a £70 asda and it was ok for a while, however the bottom bracket needed replacing within a few months (+£30) and the rear hub somehow got buckled (?). lasted me a couple of years - now i ride a £600-ish Giant, quite a nice upgrade... :)

Fromy my experice after speaking to a bike shopr he said bikes in the 400 were best value as you dont get alot more for say a 1500 biek in terms of better parts.
I would say get a brand name like Giant - worlds largest bike maker I believe.

How many miles? How many replaced parts?

Whilst much of what this guy says is good advice, perhaps on a few issues he needs to check out planet reality!

To be fair, it does really all depend on what YOU want from a bike does it not?
If you just want something that sits in the garage and now and again you will pop 1/2 a mile to the corner shop to get a paper and a pack of ciggies, then I'd suspect one of these would do fine.
If you want to go "Biking" then I guess not.
I have a £150 Raleigh in the garage and it's sat there for a good year or two without being ridden, and it's still fine :)

My backup bike is a cheap £60 mountain bike. Its been very reliable and its comfortable and I actually rode it at 26 stone. Admittedly I've replaced the ball bearings in both wheels. I was riding that bike regularly for over a year I think and successfully lost about 7 stone because of it. However it has no suspension at all and I think suspension is the real achilles heel of cheap bikes either front or back. Anyway I did 2,500 miles on it approx. Frankly it was one of my best purchases ever.

Well i know for certain that I cant afford £200 ~ £250 on a bike, but congrats to those that can. For the rest of us, we'll just have to suffice with so called cheap tat.
Cheers OP

buy something second hand - £100 will get you a perfectly good bike. avoid any suspension at this price.

It's not far out - http://www.statistics.gov.uk/pdfdir/ashe1105.pdf The spirit of his rant is pretty spot on, though. toffee is right, better to buy a second hand bike at about £100. There are hundreds of "this is the year I'm going to get fit" bikes in garages and under stairs up and down the country. Mostly never used "because the saddle is uncomfortable".
Dave.
Did you read the article tempest?
In the section you've screen dumped it states - 'for further information and sources see the end of the article'
If you check the sources you'll see these average wage figures are taken directly from the figures produced by the Office of National Statistics. Is this not planet reality?
This weekly wage comes out to about 26K a year. This seems perfectly reasonable to me without even checking the sources.
Perhaps before posting screen dumps with big red arrows over other peoples clearly well researched work you should at least do them the courtesy of reading it.
