Can hear the new single, The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg over at http://www.ironmaiden.com/article.php?section=1&subsection=1&article_type=&article_id=1324

A 7.5 minute single!! Sounds pretty awesome to me....Bring on the new album...full details (from their website)

"Iron Maiden plan to release their new studio album entitled A MATTER OF LIFE AND DEATH, in early September.

The band started writing songs at the end of 2005 after a short break from their hugely successful festival appearances in Europe and the USA. After Christmas the songs were completed and rehearsed when the band then got together with producer Kevin 'Caveman' Shirley at Sarm West Studios in London to start work on recording the backing tracks.

Kevin Shirley has now co-produced three of the bands studio albums alongside Steve Harris, as well as two of their recent Live DVD's and albums. From this the working relationship between Kevin and the band seems to get stronger and stronger. Says Kevin, 'The Beast is back! I feel from the outset we all clicked on this one. We spent two months in the studio, from Go to Whoa - from Nicko's 'tubs up' to final mixes and sequenced master! That's a tiny gestation period for an album. Producing Iron Maiden is like sitting in the head and driving one of those mammoth automatons from Star Wars or Saturday morning cartoons! And there's nothing that can stop it!'

'I feel incredibly privileged to have been around to see this album born and breathe life. There have been only a couple of occasions in my career when the ENTIRE process of recording felt so complete - and it is on display here.'

As on previous projects all of the tracks were performed live and together in one room. No click tracks or computer tightening or manipulation has happened at any stage of the recording.

Says Steve Harris,' I think in many ways this has been the easiest album in terms of recording that we've ever done. The whole process of writing through to recording was very natural. I think in terms of the material we've also pushed our boundaries yet again and I think it will please our fans but also really surprise a lot of people as well. The sound we've managed to get is very powerful for a Maiden record and all of us have pushed ourselves in our own ways to create something that we're all immensely proud of and I think working as quickly as we did with Kevin really was part of that process. We simply can't wait to take this out on the road. We've played some great shows and had a lot fun recently introducing some of our older songs to a new generation of fans. However for us personally we're incredibly excited about getting out and performing these new tracks.'

Says Bruce Dickinson,'This album has to be our best since working with Kevin. There is such a wide scope of musicianship on this album and in parts this album is truly epic. I thought with the likes of Paschendale from the last studio album that we could only hope to surpass that but having now heard the album back as well as sitting with a few select people and hearing their reactions as well I truly believe we have managed it. Every one of us has put everything into this record and it's really paid off. However we've had such fun making it that it's almost difficult to believe what we've managed to achieve in the time it took.'

I have just watched the video that will be released on the Iron Maiden website and I think it is heading to the Classic style of Iron Maiden. I really liked the sound it is so heavy, compared to a few albums they released. I hope the rest of the album is as good as the single. I can't wait.

It's going to be a good year.

Wow what a cracking song, if the rest is as good it may even surpass Dance Of Death. I'm really looking forward to this now

This is sounding great! Loving the mid pace of it, and the guitar sound. It actually reminds me quite a bit of Trouble... now there was a band too!

Looking forward to the Maiden album! Up the Irons indeed!

Soooooo looking forward to this album. Love the single, and even though the chorus isn't that good the guitar riff is great.

Looking forward to the album very much now :)

Kerrang! and Classic Rock magazines both gave positive reviews.

Kerrang! - Although 'A Matter Of Life & Death' perhaps may be too ambitious for some palates, this album keeps everything longtime fans loved about Iron Maiden alive. The bristling heaviness, the time changes, the astonishing musicality, the filmic grandeur. Hoist your flag high. 5/5

Classic Rock - Here's an all-time great band more than living up to their reputation. A Matter Of Life & Death is possibly the album of the year - and when was the last time this could be said of Iron Maiden? 9/10

I have just listed to the full album of Iron Maiden's A Matter Of Life and Death and it is one hellva album from start to finish. It is one of their heavyist albums and one of their darkest and is really good. When it is released I will be buying the album properly, but for now this is one of the best albums that has been rleased for 2006.

It took me a long time to get into the two previous albums. They're both great but they contain some 'filler' tracks that I'm still not too fond of. This new album has none of those and is absolutely amazing from beginning to end!
One of the best they ever made for sure and maybe even the best! Highly recommended.

Well done to Maiden for releasing this on a Bank Holiday, as it effectively removed the option of buying this online for delivery on release day! Reintroduced me to the old feeling of anticipation for the date of release and the rush out to the shops on the day to make sure you were one of the first to get it. Only difference is that it's now cheaper in the local Sainsburys (£9.79) than going to the record shops. Anyway, it's probably the first album I've bought in the shops on release date for about 4 or 5 years!

On my second listen right now and this really is classic Maiden. Already reasonably certain that it will be regarded at least as their best since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son and it could go even higher in my ratings!

For a band that was once my favourite, but dropped so low that I didn't even buy Virtual XI until about 4 years after it was released, it is fantastic to see their gradual return to form since Bruce and Adrian rejoined the band, and long may it continue. Looking forward to Earls Court at Christmas even more now!

Just given this a first listen. Nowhere near as immediate and sing-a-longy as the previous 2, which is good. Is going to take a few listens to get into this which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. This is the most classic Maiden sounding album in some time.

Only listened to this once so far, but the one thing that struck me was that the production sounds quite poor, which is surprising as I always thought Maiden were a band you could count on for crystal production.

The drums definitely sound flat and damp, and there's times when there is no distinction whatsoever between the three guitars and they get lost in a mush of middle EQ.

Desperately hoping it was just my ears deceiving me, I played it back to back with "Dance of Death" and it definitely sounded dull in comparison.

Here's to hoping it will grow on me production-wise as on first listen the songs were struggling to shine through the murk.

I ordered it as part of HMV's £5 off £30 Bank Holiday deal, & totally forgot there would be no mail today!   What an idiot! Probably have to wait until Wednesday or Thursday now, oh well, they say patience is a virtue.

BTW hedgie, was the Sainsbury £9.79 price with or without the DVD?

Without - it was £14.99 with it and I didn't fancy paying an extra £5 for a DVD that I might watch once. I must have about 20 of these bonus DVD's and I've only watched about 4 or 5. If it had been just a couple of quid more I'd have gone for it, but I was more interested in hearing the album.

I'm loving this album although I'm still undecided whether it's better than DOD.

I ordered it as part of HMV's £5 off £30 Bank Holiday deal,
Same here but I've had two e-mails saying the other items in my order have been sent out but not the Maiden CD/DVD (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p=18710&a=60823&g=280345&url=http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=542425)

BTW the £5 off if you spend over £30 is still on till 9am tomorrow.

How are you listening to it? I'm using some really high quality headphones and it sounds excellent to me. It's actually one of the best produced albums they ever made in my opinion.

Great album! The only real criticism I have is that Bruce's vocals seem a little thin to me at times, which is kind of strange because they sounded great on last year's Tyranny of Souls. In any case, the album production sounds much better than the atrocity that was the mastering of Dance of Death (which was improved in the DVD-A version, but still wasn't perfect).

Production sounds great to me (listening on hi-md with basic headphones), although perhaps I don't have the "ear" for these technical things.
Fantastic album, current faves are "Brighter than a Thousand Suns" & "Longest Day"

Wow. I haven't listened to Iron Maiden since 1986 - the year I 'discovered' alternative music and left this heavy rock stuff behind after a couple of 'Somewhere in Time' gigs. This thread got me curious. Time has certainly been kind to them - this is epic, dense, intelligent, beautifully played stuff. A real surprise. One of the albums of the year for me. I'm losfer words ...

So how does it compare with the really early stuff? Stopped listening to IM after Powerslave, and they started downhill somewhere after Piece of Mind....

To be honest if you thought IM went downhill after Piece of Mind then I'm not sure you will like this. It's an excellent album, but most of the songs are rather less catchy than the early ones were. Some of the songs are also quite different from anything Maiden has done before.

If I were you I'd still give it a go though.

Just a heads-up, for those who haven't seen Flight 666 yet it's on bbc4 tonight at 11pm. Seems to be part of a (very) short series of heavy metal programmes. Tomorrow night they're showing Maiden live in concert (seems to be a shortened version of the live disc from Flight 666) as well as Heavy metal Britannia.

It's a really good movie, moreso for Maiden fans obviously, but my girlfriend really enjoyed it too and became a Maiden fan about ten minutes into it!

Not as much as she enjoyed the Anvil movie, but that's because she wanted to mother them I think! :D

With a title like "The Final Frontier" it does get you wondering what their intentions are after this album and the touring, though.
