View Full Version : Plumbing in a Mini-Disc recorder

Hi,

I have a Yamaha RX-596RDS receiver with DVD etc. I also have a cassette tape deck hooked up to it, and I'm now thinking about getting a Mini-Disc recorder :nuts:

The question is, how do you guys/gals hook up the digital connections?

Because the Yamaha doesn't have a digital pass-through for recording (as amps usually have for analogue connections), I'm thinking of doing the following:

DVD --> (coax) --> Amp (for listening to DVDs)

DVD --> (optical) --> Mini-Disc (for recording CDs)

Mini-Disc --> (coax/optical) --> Amp (for listening to Mini-Discs)

I could also hook up the Mini-Disc to the amp via the usual analogue connections, for recording analogue sources.

Any comments/suggestions?

Thanks,

I can't see anything wrong with what you want to do, quite surprised that the Yamaha hasn't got a digital output though.

beware tho, (as I found to my cost) a lot of cd's have prtection on them stopping you record to Minidisk :( good for titling after you've recorded from PC tho :)

Uh... well what on earth's the point of having a digital input for recording then? :mad:

I knew that Minidisc recorders put a flag on the minidisc copy so that you couldn't make more copies from it, but preventing you from copying a CD digitally is just stupid. What's to stop you from doing an analogue copy?

Bad news, now I'm thinking twice about buying a Minidisc system :(

Are there any devices or chips out there that will remove any protection schemes from the digital output of a CD/DVD player?

You can record digitally to MiniDisc but from then on, a further copy (of the MD copy) cannot be made. My Sony MD recorder has 2 optical and 1 coax electrical inputs - never had any problems recording from CD's digitally.

Cheers :cool:

I had 7 or 8 Cd's in my collection that would not copy at all, press record & got a protection error message. gave up after that, & recorded them via the otical SPDIF on my PC, lot less hassle
