View Full Version : Seconds out...Round 2 (The Contender - ITV4)
Caught a trailer on ITV4 for the second season of The Contender.
Trailer (http://www.cityonfire.com/gZa/c2t.wmv) (4Mb - Right Click To Download)
Not sure when it starts yet but hopefully it'll be as cool as the legendary first season.
Is that Jeff "Chicken Pox" Fraza from the first season in the trailer!? :)

According to Wikipedia Fraza is in it and I think he could do well. He beat Brent Cooper (who incidentally is now in jail!) on the undercard of the Contender final.
It starts on Tuesday in the States so lets hope ITV4 start showing it pretty soon.

Well it start on ITV4 Monday 24th July 2006 at 9pm.
It's only a one hour episode so not sure if we're getting a cut down version compared to the 2 hour premiere in the States.
The ESPN website is here (http://sports.espn.go.com/espntv/espnMicrosite?showID=cntd) with a run down and profile of the 16 new fighters.
WARNING: The US premiere is tomorrow (18th July) so one assumes it will be spoilerific as of then!
So please use spoiler tags from now on if necessary. :)

Dont forget that US TV has double the ad breaks of UK TV. Shows lasting one hour are usually only 45 minutes in length.
Or it maybe the 1st 2 episodes back to back. They do that from time to time those mad yanks!!
Good to have this back and it was nice to see a few familiar faces in the crowd.
I noticed that Stallone didn't make an appearance though. I miss him already. :(
Competition here that looks good fun even if you dont win - http://contender.itv.com/ basically you choose who will get to the final. If you choose them quick enough you get more entries into winning a trip to see the final.
You can change your 'Contender' at any time so if your chosen one is knocked out then choose another.
I have set up a group called DVDF and the pasword is leonard. I think that's all the info you need but let me know if you are having probalems as dont know what else to tell you.
Heads Up starts in just over an hour!
Mark R - It's asking for an email address but not a group name?

Stupid ******* place to put the last ad break, but (what appears to be ;)) a good fight nonetheless.
Does anyone know if ITV4 are showing it in Widescreen as this show is shot in HD isn't it?
Or have they just taken an SD Source so its 4:3 like last season?
I forgot how much I love this program! That was a great fight! Glad the big bloke shut the cocky guy up, when he was showboating and dropping his guard I wanted him to knock him out!!!!
I totally didnt realise Sly wasnt in it! Wierd! Now I know though, I sort of missed him!!
Roll on next wek, shame it isnt repeated as a few people I know want to see it!!!

I'm assuming that Stallone wasn't able to do it as he's currently shooting Balboa (Rocky 6). Shame really cause his prescence certainly is missed. Glad that Michael geezer went. Mouthy git!!

P Giddy - I'm guessing you watched the American version, if so did you watch it on ITV4 too? Just wondered if there were any cuts bearing in mind the two hour running time in the states.
Great to have this back, I too was well happy to see K9 win especially as it looked like he lost rounds three and four, can't work out how it was by 'majority decision' - did someone really judge that the other guy won when the last round would have been 10-8?!
Glad they have got rid of the pointless challenges but a bit of a shame that they're not showing any more of the fights - I guess US primetime isn't yet ready for full 3 minute rounds which can often be boring!

Andrew WK - The two hour running time in the states was because two episodes aired (two fights both good) - ITV4 only did one.

OUCH!!! They totally punched the crap out of each other, the guy in the yellows head was like a YoYo!!
How did one judge give it to the yellow guy, i thought it was 4-1 maybe at a push 3-2.

I missed it :(
I have not found repeats anywhere! If you do find it, can you post the time here so I can see it!!
I think they are repeated on Sunday night (21:00-22:00), episode 1 certainly was.
Great fight last night!

Anyone else annoyed that nothing really happens for 30 minutes then there's a fight?
I prefered Season one when the tasks were to decide the match... rather than Season two where its just winning team (from previous fight) has a general chat about it... then decide.
Although in lighter news... I found the theme music too: http://www.hans-zimmer.com/fr/contender.php :)

what about teh theme music for teh ITV 1 trailer :)
Not a great fight today and agreed on the result. No wonder he got 24 ko's when he swings like that :D
Felt the blue guy was far too cocky in the first 2 rounds which cost him. And he should have finshed the yellow off in round 4.
But still enjoyed it.

Can anyone tell me whats the deal with this show, how much of it is staged, if at all?
A lot of the fights have been 2-2 with a 5th round decision. I enjoy this show, never miss an episode.

Yeah, it can get a little annoying as they do a lot of re-capping in the first 10 minutes from the previous fight and then nothing much happens until the fight.
I usually Sky+ most episodes anyway so just skip those bits.
Did I miss something or didn't the blue team receive a reward in this episode for winning the previous fight?

No they didn't get anything, or at least they didn't show it on TV if they did.
Decent enough fight last night. Shame they aren't doing the challenges - as absurd as they were last season (human chariot races?!) - they did a lot to bring out the personalities of the boxers which helps emencely before the fights. I mean were up to episode 5 now and it still feels like I hardly know the fighters. Last season spoilers...At this point they'd had Gomez' giant killing, Jeff with chickenpox, Manfredo reinstated, Ahmed / Ishe beef.

I agree that we aren't getting to know the fighters as well as in the last series. There is always going to be a question with this sort of show as to what extent events are stage managed behind the scenes. Something that has struck me as a little odd is that the blacks guys seem to be picking other black guys to fight, the white guys choose other white guys and the hispanics choose another hispanic. I don't know if this is an accident or whether there was pressure from above. If all the whites or all the blacks for example get knocked out at an early stage this section of the viewing population might lose interest. So they try and ensure each ethnic group is represented for as long as possible in the series.
In spite of the above I'm enjoying the series a lot. There is very little boxing coverage on TV these days. Having watched the UFC on some occasions I have to say that it does emphasise that boxing is a sport. The UFC is much closer to out and out violence although there are rules I realise. The violence in boxing is very stylised in comparison. I don't think that some people realise the skill levels involved in boxing. They just assume it's two guys windmilling away which is totally wrong.

It's a shame that the outlandish team tasks of the previous season have been left behind, but perhaps it put more of a physical strain on the boxers than the producers initially realised, so they junked it. Leaves the team ethic - and the rivalry it builds - at the door though. Being 'blue' or 'gold' in this season doesn't mean jack.
I agree with the comments about the boxers being a largely faceless bunch; I didn't even recognise the fella who fought the Jamaican. The actual fights are still as involving as ever (has the editing gotten slightly less hyperactive?), but it'd be nice to have some characters emerging, like last year's nice guy Gomez or the psychotically determined Anthony "I'm doing it for my kids" Bonsante. This new lot make Jesse look like Mr Personality.

Well the tasks don't have to be carrying boulders up 100 flights of stairs at a stadium but something?
Just watched the final fight of the initial block (#8)... all I'm going to say is that it's amazing, brilliant... best fight so far without a doubt..
How did you watch 8??? It has not even been aired in the US yet!??

The latest ep in the USA (7 i think) had 2 fights in the same episode, so im assuming there wasnt much build up for either one.

Exactly what welshmatt said, two fights in one episode... enjoyed it rather than the buildup the usual buildup they give. Excellent fights they were too, best so far.

They should ban the wifes/girlfriends from saying anything, they really annoy me :)
Semi-finals looks like a good set up :) - I think there's only 13 episodes in total? Given that episode 10 was two fights, 11 is first semi, 12 second semi and then 13 the finale + 3/4th place playoff?

I think he's good at pacing himself throughout the fight and fatigue doesn't set in.
I know these bouts are more intense than normal boxing matches but come on, most fighters in this comp are experienced fighters and should last at least 6 rounds easy.
Maybe that's why a lot of these fighters haven't found the big time because they lack stamina and punch themselves out within the first few rounds.

You have to consider that a lot of these guys haven't fought for a long time, so I can forgive their lack of stamina. I've enjoyed every episode so far, and hopefully K9 and Wright will have a war next week.
Well we're down to the last four now, and I'm still struggling to recall there names. Not sure if this has just been a really poor season or that the first one was extra special.

I missed last night's episode and it looks like it's not repeated on Sunday night for some reason. Or am I blind..? Does anyone know if/when I'll be able to catch last night's episode..?

Is it me about this series's fights are more like drucken brawls without the whisky. They just don't fight with any style or stick to any plan unless the plan is swing your fist as many times as you can for 3 mins.
Well down to the final two now. Didn't expect a ANOTHER double header bout. Some good scraps last night.

I really enjoyed both fights last night. It's a shame K9 didn't win, I liked the way he was the underdog (no pun intended). I was surprised he actually made the same weight as the others, he was a lot bigger built than the rest of them but not noticeably shorter.
Was the second fight the first time someone has come up off the canvas to win? A great comeback.
Forbes to win the final. I hope there's a decent undercard like last year - remember the bout to decide who really was the number one dad!

I happened to watch the final show on Sunday, it was shown as a double length episode in the US. The undercard is just the bronze medal playoff.

I'm glad the two that have made the final are the two with the best boxing abilities and boxing brain. Don't think I would have enjoyed the final if K9 had reached the final.
The final will be very close but I can see Brewer just edging it as he has the knack of getting off head shots when it matters.
3rd place fight:
K-9 totally dominated there, his power showed through and I had him winning every round before the stoppage. I think if he had fought like that in the semi he might have beaten Forbes but he didnt look very confident against him and just stayed back.
Will have to record the main fight as too tired to watch it now!

The Final...
The final was very disappointing tbh, I much prefered the 3rd place playoff. There were a few good shots in the early rounds as Brewer looked to dominate the match, but then the fight peated out at about halfway and couldn't get going again.
I thought Brewer would win as per my prediction earlier in the thread but I thought he had done enough to win it outright on the night rather than from a split decision.
How short was Forbes. I didn't think he was that small.
Also, the winner picked up $500,000. I thought they were playing for $1million like last year?
I was disappointed with the final aswell, although
how one of the judges could score it in favour of Forbes I dont know
Wonder how long it will be before we have a fight between the 2 series winners (both series were the same weight division, right?)

The final fight was very disappointing, but Brewer had a game plan and he stuck to it. Kudos to him for nullifying Forbes and picking up the half mil. Loved the 3rd place match. I hope that next season (has it been picked up again?) has a bit more zing to it, but I've generally enjoyed this series.
