I just bought a Toshiba 100hz scan TV with a dolby digital decoder built in.
My DVD player has a digital coax cable out (no optical) so i was going to use this 'till i went into Dixons and they wanted £30 for the lead !!
Is it worth getting one and will i notice a big difference in sound quality ? I noticed one of the forum sponsers is doing them for £26 so might be tempted

A digital connection will be the only way you can get digital sound so yes, it is worth it :D but no, £26 is still to expensive.

Beyond Hifi (http://www,beyondhifi.net) (also sponser) do a 1.5m one for £5 (+post) Heres the
direct link (http://www.beyondhifi.net/shopping/MoreInfo.asp?ProductID=418&CatID=102) (the page is in frame btw)

Or you can just use a bog standard phono lead. Works just as well...

I thought about that too and tried it buy it didn't seem to make any difference to the sound when i pulled it out or stuck it back in. Are you sure that is the case ?
I have the TV and DVD connected through scart and a standard (gold plated) phono lead going between the "Digital coax in" on the back of the TV and the "Digital out" on the DVD player.
Sorry if i sound like a complete idiot but...well....i am when it comes to av :(

a standard composite video lead and digital coax are both 75ohm phonos so they are interchangable (also stereo phonos to a certain extent) but I was last told that the major difference between them is the shielding. The digital signal needs to 'bounce' a certain way (wavey stuff  ) and the shielding on the digital coax is designed to do this.

Make sure the DVD player is set for bitstream output, and that the TV is set for digital in (for DVD sound).
Sounds like you've just got the normal stereo sound through the SCART cable.

Did you believe this?
Was he trying to sell you a £50 lead or something?

Any reasonable quality piece of 75 ohm coax will do the job fine (with a phono plug on each end of course). Shouldn't cost more than a few quid. A standard audio phono might work just as well too, but it's a 50 ohm cable, so if you get any unexplained dropouts, that could be the cause.
Of course, "digital" interconnect manufacturers will try to get people to believe any old hokum if it helps them flog their ridiculously overpriced wares to the unknowing punter!

MikeK, I wasn't conned into getting anything by anyone, why do you think I mentioned that they are basically a video phono and recommended SIB to pay a fiver instead of £26?!
