The A7 is a good qualtity player, but it is true that it does not play CD-R or DVD-R / RAM disc.
DVD-A (Audio) is a new type of Audio DVD (a step up from CD) which is capable of 192Khz not just 44Khz like CD. however thier are only a few DVD-A disc out at present compaired to DVD-V.
i had the same player & problem so bought myself a Philips 622 this player plays CD-R, CD-Video & MP3's pritty cheap only about £165, but the DVD-Video Quality is not a patch on the A7.
Sorry for the bad news

Hi,
I have got the A7 and the strange thing is, that I was watching a VCD on a CDRW yesterday. I put in the second disc which was on a CDR and it did not work. However I think it was due to the fact that nero gave an error message saying that the encoding was not to standard.
I am going to try and re encode the VCD and see if it works. I will post a reply if I can get it to work later.

I have just copied the CDR VCD disk that did not work to a CDRW and the VCD played.
I find it very strange that a CDRW will work and a CDR won't. It's usually the other way around. I did not even re encode, just a CD to CD copy.
Try copying the files to a CDRW and it should work.
I hope this helps.

Sorry to say but you`ve been missinformed! The DVD-A7 was discontinued by panasonic in May this year, replaced by the DVD-RA71. The model you have can not read CD-R or RW discs (or DVD-R for that matter), as it does not have twin lasers. Panasonic have only just started fitting this as standard on this years models, such as the 71. The A7 was top of panasonics 2000 range, but there are higher models then that from other brands.
When buying a high end model it does really pay to do some research first, rather then believe what the sales guy tells you (unless you talk to a good quality indipendant store).
Hope the above info is of use.
