If the UK version is shorter its because of the PAL speedup.
I dont know if its been classified at the BBFC yet but its possible some cuts might have been made.
The R2 is released by Tartan so expect a high price for a poor disc.
All the extras on the Tartan release look like nothing worth while + it will have burnt in subs.
I'd reconmend the R3, you cant go wrong for £8.
According to the BBFC website - Battle Royale has been passed with no cuts made.
The version put through by Tartan earlier this month had a running time of 108m 29s, whereas the version put through for theatrical release in July was 113m 7s - the same as the R3 version.
Two other bits were passed uncut too, at 1m 38s and 1m 48s respectively, so a couple of short extras I assume.
I can never get my head round the speed up calculation but presumably it works for film to DVD transfer in this country too, so this would seem to be about right.
Hope this helps,
Edge

Holding out for the R2, as it has Anamorphic picture. However, whether the picture quality is better than the R3 remains to be seen. The sound on the R3 is definitely better, that's for sure. But that doesn't matter so much to me, as I don't have a setup :(

Unless you really need the extras or anamorphic, then get region 3. Transfer seems flawless and its cheap as chips. I enjoyed it tremendously

why is sound better on R3 ?
and isnt there a DC version in Japan, is that the one coming out on UK R2 ?
I believe the R3 is a full bitrate DTS track - fairly rare these days!

DD5.1 and DTS soundtracks my boy! And yes, there is a Special Edition release which adds about 7 minutes to the film. Depending on the success of this DVD I think, Tartan might consider letting us see it.
The Japanese release of BR is by far the best quality, but there are no English subs :( The SE will be released in May, but again, no subs :(
The region 3 version is very good and I would be surprised to find the region 2 version was released totally uncut.
I wouldn't - There's not actually a whole lot that warrents a trimming in the film - although the violence is sudden and brutal it's not actually as explicit as some films. The only problem there could be would be the fact that the killers and victims are schoolkids - seeing as the BBFC have accepted that this is a satire then there shouldn't be a problem, unless Tartan have taken the sissors to the film themselves.
