Last Saturday night I watched Day of the dead which I enjoyed loads and now hunger for more. I saw Dawn years ago and now want to get the trilogy on DVD.
What are the best versions to go for ? Have any of them been remade ?
Also what other Zombie type movies are worth a watch, im after a more serious movie
There is not an ultimate dawn release yet, it's more each release has something the other doesnt.
The R2 Dawn in 4:3 but does have a very good commentary buy Tom Savini there is a 2-disk dutch release but this is not as good as it sounds with documentry titled document of the dead and 2 versions of the film (there are loads floatin around)
Anchor bay are gonna release a super dooper version next year hopefully with all avaiable versions a romero commentary and a anamorphic picture and dts track (thats what i'm hope in for PLEASE)
Not sure about Day even worse dvd i think, night has an ok elite release best you can get.
Think thats it, sure somebody else know more though :0
Cheers

Thanks very much
Ill wait awhile then
also what about other Zombie movies
OK, others - The Beyond has two Anchor Bay releases - a standard release with amaray packaging, and a more expensive limited edition release. I have the latter. The Anchor Bay version (along with all other DVD versions - including Vipco's in the UK) is uncut though.
The picture looks excellent. Truly excellent.
And there are quite a lot of good extras too - an interesting commentary track by Catriona MacColl and David Warbeck (Warbeck sadly died not long after making the track), a documentary about The Beyond, a terrible music video, a German, International and U.S. re-release trailers for The Beyond, and some easter eggs: there are two Easter Eggs - a trailer for Fulci's A Cat In The Brain and the US 'R' rated cut version named Seven Doors Of Death - the title sequence for that.
The Evil Dead - There are quite a few releases of this film. There is a UK release which is cropped to anamorphic 1.85:1, and is missing an extra from the Elite version.
The Elite version is framed at the original aspect ratio of 1.33:1. The picture quality is quite good, the sound is pretty good. There is a great commentary track from star Bruce Campbell - great to listen to. There is also a commentary track from Robert G. Tapert and Sam Raimi.
The other extras are OK - there are some outtake footage for The Evil Dead, a theatrical trailer, and a photo gallery.

OK as far as I'm concerned
<b>Night of the Living Dead</b> - Get the Elite release now. It has fantastic picture and sound. 2 commentaries, 1 from director + producers and 1 from cast. Go and see Mr Brooke's excellent review here
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/other/nightofthelivingdeadelite.html
<b>Dawn of the Dead</b> - There are 3 version of this film and which version you prefer is usually a matter of taste. Also please note that the correct aspect ratio is something of a disputed situation... It is rumoured that Romero prefers 4:3 but it was shown theatrically 1.66:1 and the document of the dead extra shows Romero viewing footage full frame with a matt lines at 1.66:1 so it's anybodies guess.
The best U.S. cut edition is the anchor bay one and it is reviewed here
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/other/dawnofthedead.html
The 2-disc Dutch version contains bothe the European cut (Argento) and the "director's cut". It also has the excellent 60 minute Document of the Dead documentary (this really is a top notch doc). This is reviewed here
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=43
Finally the R2 UK disc is the director's cut and has a commentary by Savini...
As you can see the ultimate Dawn release isn't available. Someone needs to drag together all three cuts, the documentary and the commentary into one edition... For the record I have the Dutch 2-disc and the Anchor Bay edition.
<b> Day of the Dead </b> - The only edition I have any experience of is the UK R2 which is actually not too bad and it's reviewed here
http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=363&story=2323
As I state in the review it is very similar to the US Anchor Bay edition.
<b> Night of the Living Dead 90 </b> - The remake isn't as bad some people would have you believe and the UK R2 disc is actually not too bad at all... You get a director's commentary and a 25 minute featurette ... It's reviewed here

Going to DVDtimes and searching for the films will give you alot of the information you need (as you can see). In the case of Romero "Dead" films, if Michael Brooke hasn't reviewed the disc then I have :D And as we are both big fans of his work you can trust us.... honest :)
I also decided to get 'Dawn' and 'Day' after the recent showing of 'Day' on Ch4 ! ;) :)
From looking around the best value 'Day' is at MVC/StreetsOnline (please forumify Mods :) ) for £6.99 in the sale. It's the WS version with the making of that was released earlier this year, the earlier release was 4:3 and didn't include the documentary.
The best value 'Dawn' was at www.dvdoo.dk for around £16. But I'm a bit worried as I don't speak Danish and couldn't work out whether this one had the original soundtrack (or english subs) ! :( . However it is the 2 disc spoken about above and I'd be stunned if it didn't have the original (enlgish) sound. The only other supplier that I could find with this version was www.*********.com (for about £30).
Hope this helps ! :D

You can get the dutch release from http://www.proxis.be for £19.22 shipped, but I think you can buy the danish release - it has english soundtrack and if you see the reviews of the dutch DVD's then there is danish subs - so I guess it's the same release, it has the same extras as well, with the danish release there also is a little booklet but this is in danish. I don't own the DVD, but one of my friends has it, and is very happy with it.
Proxis also has the dutch release of Zombie 2 (Zombie Flesh Eaters / Fulci's Zombie) for a fair price, but maybe it's worth waiting for the new Anchor Bay release next year.
(edit: some of the many spell errors!)

yep, Night of the Living Dead has been remade in 1990, directed by Tom "from dusk till dawn Sex Machine" Savini.

yep, i agree. i like the remake and prefer it to the original. The original fan fare orchestral score makes my ears bleed! :brickwall
plus, i prefer the darker twist at the end of the remake.
Barbara is much more assertive in the remake, and takes some control, rather than being the quaint, prim, pretty lost little girl of the original. i think it adds a certain realism.
some of the remake is pretty cheesy, some OTT. but i like it.
i yawned through most of the original, might have had something to do with knowing the outcome of the story because i'd seen the remake first a few weeks before on cable.
i would recommend peter jackson's braindead and bad taste for total ott zombie gore. Also i've heard good things about the film premutos but have not seen it yet.
I can recommend these two original zombie movies
Dellamorte dellamore-rupert everitt in a carear performance as the title caracter. He is a grave digger at this possessed cemetary, the dead keep coming back and he has to get rid of them, throw in a love story with a corpse and you have a wicked film.Very hard to get hold off ,i have the red double disk eddition it came with hellraiser3 got it ff ebay for £30 but you could try sazuma.com .
the other i can recommend is the crazies(directed by gearge a romero)which was on channel 4 the other night. Its like a zombie film but with the zombies been replaced by humans(its people gone mad be killed or kill them.I would like it on dvd meself so if anyone knows where to get it please help(first time i had seen it was on channel 4 the other night
