View Full Version : World Cup Final 2006: Italy v France
A repeat of the Euro 2000 final where Italy were hard done by after Trezeguet's golden goal. I think this has the potential to be a great game.
Italy had a sublime game against the Germans, whilst France has clinically dispatched the likes of Spain and Brazil in the tournament (although they did look tired against the Portuguese - will age be a factor...?)
I'm going for an Italian win (1-0), although it would be nice if France won it purely for Zidane. It would be a perfect send-off to one of the greatest players ever to grace the football field.
I hope they both lose. Not the best by far.
Whilst there have been some negative games recently (well since the knockout stage begun), I think France deserve their place in the Final after knocking out Spain & Brazil (the latter being one of the performances of the tournament in my eyes).
I really wanted Germany o get to the Final, but after seing the way Italy played the other night, you can't say they don't deserve their place either!
Unfortunately, I think Italy will be World Champions by 10:00pm on Sunday night
I think - and I hope - Italy win and by a decent margin. Their performance against Germany, esp. in ET, was the best I've seen in the WC so far IMO.
(maybe aside from Argentina against Serbia but that wasn't much of a contest!).

I'm not really bothered who wins it now, I just didn't want the ballerinas of Portugal to steal it.
I was disappointed with the way Italy beat Australia, but I suppose it was less of a blatant dive than those from last night. They've also been in two of the most entertaining matches in the competition, USA and Germany, and the latter was arguably the best quality match as well. France have definitely got better as the tournament has gone on, although I think they've been "just good enough" rather than excellent.

Im not pushed as long as it ain't a dive puctuated snooze fest like last nights game.
I just hope we get a final that is both a cracking match and is free from controversy, I don't think that is to much to ask. The Italians are always tough to beat so I am going for them although I don't think there will be to many goals in it.

Azzuri for me; 2-0 the score.
Really want it to be a good attacking game, finished within the 90 minutes - no extra time & no penalties please.

I wouldn't complain lf franc win it becuase of Zidane and :notworthy Henry
I do want the italians to win Its been a while for them and with the crazy stuff comein up for some ofthem this would be a great way to go home :D
Forza Italia and Milan
I had money on Italy, Argentina and Portugal to win the tournament so for that reason Im hoping for an Italy win. I also have a soft spot for Italian football and enjoyed mixing with Italian fans at the Czech game.
Zidane has been one of my favourite players over the past 10 years so wouldnt be unhappy to see hime win it, my only gripe would be that the antics shown by Henry dont deserve a winners medal.
snooze fest like last nights game.
snooze fest? think yourself lucky man. i got up at 3am to watch that game (then went back to bed at full time)

my only gripe would be that the antics shown by Henry dont deserve a winners medal. But Grosso's antics against Australia do?
I hope they both lose. Not the best by far.
Italy have:-
1. Scored 11 goals [unsurpassed by any other team].
2. Conceded only 1 [unsurpassed by any other team].
3. Have the best player in the tournement by a mile [Fabio Cannvaro].
4. Have the best two midfielders in the tournement [Gattuso & Pirlo].
5. Played fabulous team football with some great passing in most of their matches [England take note - consistenly pass it the others who wear the same colour shirt and you won't go far wrong].
6. A manager who is positive and makes attack-minded substitutions [e.g. v Germany - Del Piero, Gilardino and Inaquinta].
Can anybody name a team who derserves to be in the final more than Italy?
France had a slow start but World Class perforamnces against Spain and Brazil are more deserving of a finall place than most teams that I could think of.
I hope they both lose. Not the best by far.

Elizondo chosen as Cup final ref :cuckoo:
I really don't see why the selection of the referee for the final should be important. He did the opening game and had a pretty decent game. Yes he sent Rooney off but I think he had little choice on seeing the replay. I think some people need to move on..

Back to Wimbledon and Italy's World Cup victories in 1934, 1938 and 1982 have always coincided with the first and second seeds playing in the men's final. The bad news is while first seed Roger Federer won earlier today it was the second seed who won in 1934 and 1982.

Wonder if this will make any difference to the court rullings tomorrow.
No, it will just mean that the price tags on them will only drop 50% instead of 75%.
Exactly how do you celebrate winning the biggest prize in football while under the cloud of the biggest scandle in the history of the game
Watching the italians celebrate what could of been if england had el tel instead of sven for this world cup
You're kidding right :?:

Wanted France to not-lose more than Italy, but think Italy have deserved the trophy over the duration of the "FIFA World Cup".
And after tomorrow's legal announcements in Italy, it'll be "roll up, roll up, come get your world cup winners, three for a paaahnd!"
Hope England can take something from this the next time it's down to spot-kicks...

I echo MON's commnents - no real "great" teams in it this year.
Teams underperformed, players underperformed, teams peaked too early.
Now then, when do those Euro quialifiers start? This could be our time.....

Well done Italy on the night, but I can't agree they deserved it overall due to them cheating to beat Australia and one of their thugs serving a 4 match ban in the tournement. Mind you this is the first WC final I've watched when I wanted neither side to win it.

About time too, I couldn't figure out why the Italians were so bad at penalty's, all that diving they do, about time they perfected the art, although that just about covers all of Europe in the diving stakes
Should be interesting tomorrow (if the verdict is delivered tomorrow) will no doubt see a mass exodus of players leaving for greener pastures.

is it because a Home nation hasn't won or come close perhaps has shaded the WC not to be that good though?

I disagree, a lot of players have looked drained from the start of the competition.
There may have been flashes of greatness; apart from the Argentina goal, it's all been pretty bland.

I sort of agree with some people are saying, its a World Cup that is going to be remembered for all the wrong reasons (Bar Ref's, Bad Sportsmanship, Englands continunal failures etc, etc) but there have been some cracking football, some brilliant games and a few suprises. All told not a bad 4 weeks.

According to a quote I was reading earlier he very much doubts that he will be around for the 2010 World Cup. Mark Lawerson must be happy as well as he always has to correct him will regards as to what is happening on the pitch.
Well done Italy.

Quite an impressive record by Italy - 4 World Cup wins all overshadowed by a scandal or dishonesty.
1934 - half the Italy team were paid Argentinians who played in the 1930 World Cup for Argentina but the fascists just wanted a win.
1938 - rumoured fixing by the fascists again
1982 - came after bans for match fixing
2006 - coming to the end of a match fixing scandal as I type

I can see some really lenient suspensions and fines tomorrow.

No, I think thats a bit strong. I think he will mostly be remembered for the great player he is/was.
It's like Maradonna. Most people remember him for his brilliance during his career, not getting sent home in shame from the US 94 world cup.
