View Full Version : Canon 17-40L or 10-22?
In looking to broaden my horizons beyond the 350d kit lens, I recently purchased (from ebay - Kerso) a 10-22, having found myself taken by the architectural side of things. I was in fact erroneously sent a 17-40L, and having spoken to the seller was offered the options of a) exchange or b) hang on to it. Though its not exactly what I was looking for, I feel it (the 17-40) might be suitable (for me at least) as a walkaround lens, as I dont seem to go for much reach very often, but its not the ultra-wide I had my heart set on.....I feel I am rambling a little and would simply appreciate peoples opinions on what to do here.
The 10-22 is a bit too wide to be a walkabout lens I'd think. I have it and its a great lens for playing with perspective and bending verticals at its wide end but personally I wouldn't want to use it as my 'standard' lens.
Some of these were taken with the 10-22, the rest with my walkabout lens (Tamron 28-75): http://www.standerwick-images.com/Dublin/index.html

if you need a decent wide walkabout and the reach on the long end isnt too short then keep it and get the 10-22 later. As sam says its great at the ultra wide end and good for tall buildings and the w i d e landscapes but its not something to keep on the camera all the time. I love mine since i got it but I already had the Sigma 18-50 f2.8 for the wander around size.
Keep it and enjoy the £50-60 discount.

Keep the 17-40L and get a Sigma 10-20mm later on and save a few bob into the bargain!

17-40 isn't a great range on the 350D. I'd get the 10-22mm as its a fine lens and you constantly find new things and perspectives on old subjects to use it on. Vulcans idea is good but I'd go with the 10-22 and the Sigma 30mm/1.4.

10-22 is a cracking lens, does some amazing stuff, and personally would go for it if that is what you were looking to get. From the sounds of it, you weren't really after a replacement for the kit lens at the mo, and if you do keep it you will just be pining after the 10-22. Although this is all junk if you can afford both, just get both :D
I just placed a big order with Ian, kerso couple of weeks ago and he is a very very helpfull/nice/friendly (keep adding all the praises you want) person and would deal with him again and again and reconmend him to anyone, so i am sure he wouldn't have a problem sorting out swapping it over for you asap.
just get both
thats the kicker, isnt it? Thank you all for your suggestions and advice - I haven't made up my melon yet, but I guess I can't really go wrong either way, especially since additional spending is always on the agenda
