Hi,

I was looking for a Dyson and noticed that John Lewis (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://departmentstore.at/thedvdforums?DURL=http://www.johnlewis.com/Home+and+Garden/Laundry+Room/+++Cleaning/Vacuum+Cleaners+/230204517/Product.aspx) are giving a free 5 year guarantee on Dyson Vacuums.

All Dysons now come with a five year guarantee as standard. They ran a "free 5 year" last month and have now extended it "indefinitely".

Not sure if this is through all retailers or just independents, but since JL has it I assume all. We got confirmation of this from Dyson at the start of this week.

The airflow around the motor must be blocked in some way then. Try cleaning the filter.

Dyson always seem to come out as unreliable in Which? tests. Here are a few excerpts from their most recent reliability survey:
The gap between the reliability of upright and cylinder vacuum cleaners is widening.

Last year reliability for uprights was 77 per cent compared to 90 per cent for cylinders. This year uprights' reliability has fallen to 74 per cent while cylinders have increased to 92 per cent.

However, these headline figures do not reveal the whole story as two brands have muddied the waters. Unreliable Dyson dominates ownership of uprights among our survey respondents to such an extent that if you remove their figures from the mix, overall reliability for upright vacs will rise to a respectable 85 per cent. Similarly, remove dependable Miele from the cylinder figures and the overall reliability falls to a comparable 87 per cent.

Upright vacuums

It is bad news yet again for Dyson as, for the seventh year in a row, it's bottom of our reliability survey for its upright cleaners. This year a pitiful 31 per cent of Dyson vacs up to six years old needed a repair.

Cylinder vacuums

Over 50 per cent of you who have a cylinder cleaner own a Miele, and it seems to be a great choice. Just 4 per cent of them up to six years old have broken down, which is an impressive result. Miele also turns in an excellent show in our tests – so it can offer good, versatile cleaning power with a long life span. As it did the previous year, Dyson came rock bottom in our survey. Electrolux also has poor reliability.

Yes we tried all of that sort of stuff, unfortunately it's the motor. The DC04 have notoriously poor motors, if I had looked into it a bit more I'd have noticed that you can buy a 'long lasting motor' or a 'normal motor' as a replacement  The normal ones tend to last a couple of years or so...

I got one back in January and its a dyson warranty rather than a john lewis warranty. It seemed to be only John Lewis purchased items.

Going on that survey report looks like you need a 5 year warranty on any Dyson so no wonder there giving them away now.

Mine runs fine, And my folks have had theirs for about 7 years and working a treat. They are not even expensive and cracking hoover so all good IMO

According to Which? Dyson is the least reliable brand in both the upright and cylinder vacuum cleaner categories, scoring 69%, rated 'Poor' in the upright category based on a sample size of 2778 replies, and scoring 84%, rated 'Poor' in the cylinder category, based on a sample size of 517 replies. The percentage is the percentage of those up to six years old NOT having needed a repair. The most reliable upright brand is Sebo (92%), and the most reliable cyclinder brand is Miele (96%).

Quoting Which?: "It is bad news yet again for Dyson as, for the seventh year in a row, it's bottom of our reliability survey for its upright cleaners. This year a pitiful 31 per cent of Dyson vacs up to six years old needed a repair." About cylinder vacs they said "As it did the previous year, Dyson came rock bottom in our survey."

Dyson sucks ( pun intended :D ) as far as I am concerned when it comes to customer service. They dont care when their cleaners break, even when it is obviously a manufacturering fault they claim it is due to wear and tear. I'll stick with Miele next time.

I am also not a fan of Dyson. Got two (one for a relative) about 6 years ago. The clips on the extension pipes always break. It is not isolated as friends have also had the same problem.

I am on my third pipe due to the dodgy clips. I got two as replacements under warranty and the third one I managed to get by using the Sale of Goods Act.

Glad to hear they have 5 year guarentees.

My wife worked for Dyson before they moved to Malaysia.

We've had 2 and relatives have had lots more.

None of them have been totally reliable over this period. All required spares of some sort.

They were cracking hoovers when new.

Weve just bought a Miele cleaner - these never break down and impressed - suction is unbelievable. Dyson's are now binned.

The only good thing about them is no bags needed.

This also happened to ours, and friends had the same problem too. My gf tried to get them to just send the plastic clip bit, which I managed to take off, but they refused saying we had to buy a whole new pipe. Maybe I'll have to try the Sale of Goods Act.

Cheers.

I thought it was just me!

Can't believe how unreliable they are, i've had two Dysons and theyve both broken repeatedly, wouldn't get one again without a long free warranty.
Got a SEBO now and its better than the Dyson ever was.

They are the Ferrari of Vacuum cleaners - awesome performance - crap reliability.

We're on our second in 5 years - whats that all about? Surely a £200 vacuum cleaner should last longer than that. My dear old gran had her Hoover upright for about 30 years!!

I bought mine from John Lewis. I simply sent the store concerned an email using the relevant contact details from their web site. I have got to hand it to JL, they happily agreed to replace both the pipes free of cost (after I sent an email quoting the relevant section(s) of the Sale of Goods Act).

Yes JL's customer service is excellent. I had a telly off them which went consistently wrong after a couple of years. If I'd have bought it from any other retails I'd have been shafted but they gave me my money back allowing me to buy a better telly from them with a new 5 year guarantee!

We have an original DC01 which is nearly 10 years old. In that time, it's been thoroughly used and abused (including using it to suck up building debris when we removed all the plaster in our house for refurbishment). The only thing we've had to do to it is a five minute dismantle and clearout when it's got blocked and replace the belt twice.

Sounds like they don't make 'em like they used to.

if only they kept building them onshore, instead profit came first. Sign of the times unfortunately although hopefully one day these companies will learn
