Just considering this at the moment and any changes would be about a year away!

Anyhow, thinking of converting my garage to a dedicated home cinema room.

Garage is about 8 x 12 feet.

Was considering a screen (7x5 or 6x4) with obviously a projector.

Not considered in detail the actual hardware, but anything I have at the moment would remain in the sitting room, so would be new equipment.

Budget would be around the £5/6K range.

Really just looking for any views from people who have converted their garage or if people think the overall size would be too small -length is probably okay, just the width (refrain from the jokes please  ).

Any views?

Thanks

You'll have to use a projector, yep, surround sound, any neighbours? Got to consider the tempeture, it would be cold in the garage, wouldn't it?

With thin walls would sound come in from the outside, from a nearby road?

Am myself thinking of converting the loft into a H/C room, but that is a while off. Cost is the main, stumbling block.

Citysmith - thanks for the points.

Neighbours are not too close, so not a problem.

It would be cold, but I intend fitting a couple of radiators.

It is a new house and the walls are actually pretty well insulated and reasonable thickness...........some new fire regulations insist on it, so I am told???????????

No main roads near me, so no sound from the outside.

So that takes care of those pionts!

My main concern at this stage is whether or not the room would be too narrow or not?

There must be somebody around here who has converted a garage or is it a complete no no for some reason?

Your main problem isn't the width ( 8ft should be okay, though you will need to be careful what speakers you buy), but the accoustics, all that brick & concrete will play merry hell with the reverberations in the room, you will have to try & dampen the sound down, by using either specialized products or by using soft furnishings like carpets & rugs on the wall.

If you are considering a projector, you won't have much change left from your budget to buy the rest of the kit & the materials needed for the garage conversion, you might want to consider upping the budget, or looking at some of the newer rear projection sets, there very good value for money these days.

Hope that helps.
