New Property Ladder every Wednesday. Tonight’s highlighted the absurdity of continuing with this 2 houses nonsense. SB pregnant during one reno but not in the other! The fallacy that these 2 developments are being done at the same time was always tenuous but this is just dumb. Never understood why they did this seeing as they could double the length of the series with not much more work.

Ginga bint seriously got on my nerves. There’s a relationship that will last. :suspect: SB got her sums wrong at the start saying the flat was 11 thousand square feet! Lunatic amount of money spent and they made a gigantic loss even though they were told they would pretty much from the off. Pleased for the other 2 as they really seemed to have it sussed and took advice unlike the ginga and made out like bandits.

Very little funbag action though. Are those days gone forever?

I used to be unable to see the attraction of SB but now I do.

Couldn't believe those two bought that house for £250k without even going to see it first!

No repeats listed for this coming week. IIRC the last series of this and Ramsay’s "The F Word" were repeated quite a few times immediately after transmission but nada for either this time aorund. Odd.

Probably because any spare space on E4 is taken up with a load of people in bikinis with the sound muted.

I was really happy that the ginger couple lost all the money. They simply didnt listen to the Beeny, who cares if it open and spacious when you can have 150k instead.

Fools.

I haven't watched this in ages because it became so predictable. Almost every week the muppets would over spend, ignore Sarah's advice and end up looking like the idiots they were.

jonathan.e

But this week one couple did just that and got rightly shafted while the others listened, made good decisions and made a very tidy sum so not as predictable as was.

SB looked great and rough in the space of 5 minutes during this programme, a little off putting.

As for those two with the place above the bar - they didn´t listen to the Beeny and frankly deserved everything that went wrong.

Got round to watching this - seems the very slow property market in the last year or so means we should see plenty more losses instead of the frustrating rising prices bailed them out rubbish there's been in the past. That couple were just complete numpties, and I'm always surprised by their shock at being told they were set to make a huge loss - had they not even looked at their own figures?

mjb1975
30-06-2006, 07:29
Only caught up with this last night - that couple with the home entertainment system. Oh. My. God.

The others were very lucky (with the underpinning) but glad it worked out for them. They seemed, shock horror, quite sensible.

Watched this last night. I really don't like the two property setup, I think they like to show how it should be done and how it shouldn't be done.

This show is like Star Trek you always know who is going to fail. If in the introductions they have a "designer" in their job title somewhere chances are they will be complete knobheads.

The best part of the show was when they got their quotes back and it was £160k or something and the bloke says to Beeny "I wish someone had sat us down and given us a reality check", she looked like she was going to hit with a sledge hammer.

That show must have been filmed quite a while ago, I live not far from Islington and the bar that their flat was above is not there anymore (it's now an even poncier bar) and the restaurant next door is now a Blacks, and the cafe the other side is now a bar.

jonathan.e
30-06-2006, 09:23
A bus going by that bar in Islington had a banner for the Penelope Cruz flick "Sahara" on it so must have been March/April 2005.

So they both came out on top this week?

How did Habib manage to buy the Brighton flat without knowing about the imminent £75k restoration payment?

And good on the student bloke, 50k debt on 10 credit cards and he still managed to get a 100% £50k mortgage and a £10k loan, all despite quitting university? The banks must love him! Couldn't believe he was going to buy those two shops though!

!

I think he bought it at auction and said something about there being 'too much paperwork to read' regarding the £75K clause :cuckoo: he was a lucky bloke in the end, however, to be fair he read the selling price just about spot on.

I worried about the other two the whole way throught the programme, they took a hell of a risk, mind you they had little else to lose did they....it was succeed or bankruptcy next. At least they had the sense to obey the Beeny.

jake1969
07-07-2006, 07:17
Habib just annoyed me so much. Having had three valuations, two of which were at £300k, £70k was not nearly enough profit on an investment of £230k. What is it with some people? Pure greed!

And there was his comment about how much profit he could have made if it hadn't have been for the £75k restoration bill. That's why the flat was so cheap in the first place.

With someone so greedy I'd usually like to see them make a whopping loss but in this case a woman's home was at risk!

You can imagine the conversations at home.

Mother: "The banks want to foreclose on my house because the mortgage hasn't been paid."

Habib: "What? They expect to be paid? Isn't the money free?"

Changing to the other couple. Foolhardy or what but you've got to admire their spirit. And the girlfriend was rather cute looking!

Aaaaaargh!! They didn’t say if the Poole woman flogged it and for what! Hate that.

Yes I assume that meant she hadn't.

But they did say (I think) that she had offered on another property a few months later, for which she would presumably need the money, so not sure what to think.

That mock garage was just stupid. Of course people still want a garage to put their fancy car in, and leave the day to day car out on the drive.

Can't believe people pay £750k for houses in Poole! If I had that kind of money, I would NOT live in Poole. Nothing against the place, I would just live elsewhere if I was throwing that kind of money about.

Arthur Fowler
12-07-2006, 21:17
I assumed that she hadn't sold the Poole property as well.

Was a bit confused about the Crouch End property as the house he bought seemed VERY cheap for the area. Perhaps there are good and bad parts of Crouch End, but my sister paid almost as much for a 2 bed flat as he sold his 4 bed house for.

KennyVader
12-07-2006, 21:30
Crouch End is a sort of buffer area between the posh areas of Muswell Hill and Highgate, and the "somewhat less desirable" Wood Green, Manor House. There are roads round there that have Jags at one end and burnt out fiestas at the other, to remind you of which area you are in. I imagine his place might have been more towards Manor House where things are still "up and coming", whereas your sister's is probably at the Muswell Hill end of Crouch End where it's already hip and pricey.

Arthur Fowler
12-07-2006, 21:40
That would make sense. My sister is towards the south end, up the hill off Crouch Hill. Thanks.

The one with the happy Shower will as she bought it 4 years ago. But she would rather loose £50k off the asking price to have a Happy House. Nuts!

Interesting one in Brighton. Surely he could put a little 2 man lift in though?

Twonk of the week is Gareth. A record producer who I can find no sign of when googled.

KennyVader
26-07-2006, 21:51
Yet again neither of them sold their properties, unless I missed something with the Brighton bloke. Kind of admire his sense of ambition and scale, but yeah he definitely should have had the lift put in. I think the fact that the penthouse would have had the whole £600 per annum service charge to pay would be a good thing, would be a great draw that the lift was only for them and not have to be shared with any of the "less well off" in the older flats below

I didn't understand why the record producer bloke didn't just put in a paved turning-T to the side of the house to help with turning vehicles round, even if he would have had to build up a bit of the hillside for it. That turntable thing would have been a better spend than the outdoor jacuzzi thing.

Beeny looked good towards the end of today's episode though, she seemed to have trendier hair in the later scenes.

KennyVader

Interesting episode tonight, one guy, two houses. He seemed a pretty sensible and successful chap (apart from when he was knocking down that wall)! The garden etc looked amazing, I guess it shows what you can do when you devote every hour to your property and don't bugger off on holiday for two weeks in the middle of the refurb.

I like how the long time period that the episode covers means Beeny changes radically in attractiveness during the hour.

The older series episodes are currently being repeated on Discovery Real Time (250 on Sky) at 15:00 each day, for anyone that missed them.

That's what I thought. Just the type of girlfriend that would expect the boyfriend to run around after her. When she complained about not seeing him could she not have gone to the house and mixed cement with him?

Mind you, he might have been tempted to set her feet in it!

Liked the incredibly wonky house project at the end. Makes you wonder whether the first house was worth doing when he turned the second house round in 8 weeks for half the profit.

The chances are that she was paying for a portion of the mortgage.

I've done 90% of the work on our 2 houses we've bought and rennovated. One we sold and the second we're living in. I work but my wages don't pay the mortgage.

Wowza. She lasted 4 hours stripping wallpaper one day before she decided she was in danger of smudging her lipgloss and simply had to leave. I loved how "we" kept being used when talking about the work done and the finished product. She’d done absolutely sod all!

This was an old one I can’t recall seeing before. £4k was ludicrous - They should have lived in it for a year and waited for the market to rise or a better offer to come along. Could have made just as much with a part-time job. The one property over 1 hour format is so much better. Why can the idiot producers not see that?

Nice to see old footage of Beeny and the twins looking hot.

KennyVader
24-08-2006, 12:18
I presumed when they said that on the voiceover that money issues or something had forced them to sell up. Earlier when presented with the likely £15k profit (after the estate agent valuations) she had said "no way, not worth it". So I presume the mortgage on it was crippling them (he was the only one working wasn't he? Even for a pilot, a £700k mortgage is a lot to fund) so they probably decided to sell up and downsize. Or maybe absolutely everyone that came round to see it was only offering £650k type figures so they decided to sell immediately they got an offer that put them in profit, even if only just.

All the ones that feature listed properties seem to end up in little or no profit for a hell of a lot more work. I think the listed properties are best left to people of the Grand Designs ilk, who actually plan to live in the thing for the rest of their life, so don't care as much about having to turn an immediate profit.

It seemed like Battle Of The Pregnancies this episode, as well as the woman in the house growing by the minute, looked like Ms Beeny popped one out over the course of the show too.

The website (http://www.channel4.com/4homes/ontv/property-ladder/) seems to be confused about what episodes have been on, unless I'm confused with all the repeats that are currently showing on Discovery.

edit: looks like they're just not including the "old repeats" on the website, makes sense I suppose.

jonathan.e
24-08-2006, 12:48
This was episode 9/9. Seems like a "series" these days consists of 4 new ones, four revisits and an out and out repeat. A nasty American practice that the money-fixated, souless executives at C4 are only too happy to take up. Same dilution afflicts Grand Designs as well.

It's strange as because most of the episodes contain 2 sets of developments they could effectively make more programs if they just deticated 1 show to 1 development.

They must have been desperate to sell at that price. Much better to live in it.

As previously mentioned, Grade 2 listed is ok if you're going to live in it, but not a good option for a fast buck.
